PURPOSES: BREAD exists to assist the people of Kenya spiritually and physically. These aims are carried out through our charilable purposes of the advancement ofchristianity. the advancement of Education and the prevention or Relief of Poverty. BREAD'S MAIN AcTlEs AND ACHIEVEMENTS: BREAD supports the work oftwo Kenyan Evangelists. Rev Amos Lwaya leads a ministry called'Grace Mission Outreach. and Mr Eliphas Gitonga is based at his church in Tharaka which is called 'Gospel Across the Nations,. These two men and their teams of about twenty people usually preach the Gospel in remote locations. BREAD considers Evangelism and Church Planting ofprimary importance and of great publlc benefiL River water is nornially used in the homes of the Tharaka people who live In a very drought prone area of Central Eastern Kenya. Women and children can walk as far as five kilornetres to the river to fetch water. Water is carried in a 20 Iitre plastic drum tied onto the back This is exhausting worlL The Water Tank Project involves the purchase of large round PVC tanks which are placed In the homes under a tin roof. When it rains the water RS collected and dlrected by gutter into the tank. This gives 2,300 litres of clean water for household use. Families report that the incidence of water borne diseases such as amoebic dysentery are greatly reduced with use of the rainwater. In evaluating this project we note that many Tharakans have requested a tank for their home. In 2022 one hundred and sixty four water tanks were installed in Tharaka homes. This activity is clearly of public benefit as it results in a reduction in water-borne diseases among the Tharaka people.
TR NUAL REPORT cati ect Many poor children in Kenya do not have the opportunlty to be educated at Secondary School. As a resultthey do not fulfil their God given potential. BREAD has been assisting some young people at Secondary School who have 'dropped out., not due to lack of intelligence. but because of poverty. This project assxsts city and rural chpldren. BREAD funds three quarters of the fees parents pay at Secondary School and College level. equipping students for the job market when their education is complete. In the calendar year 2022 BREAD assisted forty one students with their education. The key public benefit of this Project is the irnproved education of individual beneficiaries, which allows individual students to progress to further studies orjobs. When employed this allows individual beneficiaries to better provide for the material needs of their families. PUBLIC BENEF. Throughout the year. in carrying out the activities of BREAD, the Trustees have had regard to the Commission's Public Benefit Requirement Ststutory Guidance. FINANCES: In the calendar year of 2022 BREAD raised funds for Kenya by various means including church donations. individual donations. and gifts from charitable trusts. The total raised from donatlons and legacies was £45,068.42 and from other charitable activitfies was £4,160.00. This gave a totsl Income for 2022 of £49.228.42. The BREAD committee met six times in 2022. The purpose of these meetlngs was to plan various fundraising events to support the work in Kenya and to discuss and agree how the chariws resources should best be used to help people on the ground fin Kenya. BREAD'S Coordinator in Kenya Is Mrs Catherine Miriti and the Deputy Coordinator is Mrs Lucy Mutembei. These women have been handling funds forvariows projects in Kenya since BREAD'S inception in 1998. In 2022 grants of £39.849.00 were sent to Kenya for Evangelism, Church Plantin& the purchase of Water Tanks, and for the Educatlon ProjecL On examination of BREAD'S finances in the calendaryear of 2022 we note that there was a Increase in incorne from £35,409.05 in 2021 to £49.228.42 in 2022. Eixpenditure also saw an increase from£36.116.92 in 2021 to £42,088.62 in 2022. Cash atthe bank and in hand was £21,330.79 in 2021 and £28,470.59 at the end of December 2022. This is a pleasing set of accounts. BREAD'S charitable work is dependent on private donations. small grants and sponsored events. Donations that are specified towards a particular Project are treated as Restricted Funds and are applied as designated by the donor. FUTURE PLANS: BREAD wishes to continue supporting our partners in Kenya in helping alleviate poverty, provision of water tanks. assisting poor students with education. supporting church planting and evangelism.
