The Mansion is managed by the Charity. Th¢ff We￿ eight active trust¢¢s thmUg￿UI year. David
Butcher officiatly retired in j￿Uary 2024. I￿1 t￿k w part after DeCeM￿r 2023. when he an￿unced his
decision to leave. All the tr￿￿ceS keep in ck)se touth with Mansion affairs and attend monthly meetings
regularly. Individual trnmees tsk¢ th¢ lead on differeni a$￿ts. but all are fully involved and ¢ognisant of
what is hapF¢nin8. W¢ are keen to ap￿Int at least one new truste¢. and we hope io do so during 2025.
Our only fvll-time ¢mploy¢¢. lh¢ OF¢rations' Mana8¢r, lives * ihe Mansion. Unfortunately. the
Mansion's remote location makes it vulnerable to allempts to break in so his presence is a deterrent and a
safeguard. We also have a part tim¢ Admintstrator. a freelan¢¢ Accountant 1A￿)kkeePer, and another
freelancer who does our social media for a couple of hours per week

The Charity has ihree broad aims: io conserve ¢h¢ Mansion, to encourage training in ￿OneMas0nry and other
traditional crafts. to Iwk after the rare and endangered Horseshoe bats. As part of mainiaining an
equilibrium betsveen thes¢ aims. th¢ trustees m￿St balance ihe need for essential main¢enan¢¢. with the need
for improvements. and the demands of ih¢ ¢onservatkon imperative. In consequence. there are many
competing claims for the Charity's limit¢d fvnds, and on the trustees, time and energies. Funding is tight,
and the Charity Telies heavily on the supp)rt provided by ts Trustees and other Volunteer5.
For many y¢ors the cost of full corLServation of the Mansion was estimaied at £5million. We exFKct this to
hav¢ ris¢n ￿cause of the impact of inllation in the building indusiry and we are looking to update the
estimate. We cannot fund conservation from our Sm￿] operating surpluses, so depend on grants.
Once conserved ihe Mansion should FK able to pay for iiself. including fufurc maln1¢naft￿, and Should last
for as long into the futur¢ as it was looked af*r.
During 2023 we rett1V￿ advice from the National Lottery Heritsge Fund (NLHF) that w¢ should work more
¢los¢ly with the National Trust ￿￿. who own the land surrounding the MansiotL and o)nsider ways to
improve the Mansion's financial resili¢n¢e. Following that advice. we put together * Project Enquiry Fom)
with the support of both the NT and SDC. Th¢ outrome wa8 an invitation to apply for a Resilience Grani
from the NHLF as a next step. Since the￿ all three organisaiions hav¢ b¢¢n involved in preparing for that
appli¢aiion. which we will make in 2025. It is. howtver, a ¢omEwiiive pro¢¢s& $0 the result is uncertain.
SDC, ￿ part of their support as owner5. also mad¢ a grani of £12,000 towards our wre costs for which we

The entrantt and entrance hall were greatly improved in tim¢ for the start of the 2024 open season, with the
installation of an extemal Tamp, a n¢w main door. levelling of the hall floor. and n¢w purpose made shop
rittinBS. Wc hope the improvements will tojst revenue from the slM)p. The new ramp and boarding over th¢
uneven stone floor have made access easier for all visitors. and especially for those who are disabled. Ow
thanks to th¢ Charles Skey Charitable Tru￿ for agrani of£215(Kl which covered most of th¢ ￿5t Thankyou
also to the Benefact Group for a raffle FKize of £l.000 which al￿ contributed. The balance w&5 fvnded by
the Charity.

less freely than they wsed io. but we still did a bit better than hold our own. O￿n day ii¢kei saie5 were alM)ut
5% higher than in 2023. This was helF*d by our decision to incre8s¢ ticket price& and to start charging for
¢hildren. W¢ look * the pri¢¢s charged ai Wher b¢n¢hmark venues and try ro keep within a comparable
ratio. Numbers on op¢n days were slighily down. bul up 15% for priva* lou￿. sione ¢arYing, photoshoots.
bat experi¢rtces. school visits and paranormal ni8his. Overall, it was a satisfactory year. covering the winter
cosls, routine m8intenancfy and xt up costs for 2025.
We received an unexpected legacy from Mrs Kate Workmw widow of our Stsunch supporter and fomier
Trustee Mr John Workman. In line with (Njr pvlicy on'windfatls,. we have added the money to our reserves.

disappointin& but not unexpecteQ and we remain gr￿efvI for th¢ tw¢nty-one years of Royal support that
were given lo the Mansion. We have started ihe s¢ar¢h for a new Patron.
Aehievementj and Perfonn*n¢es
The New Year's Day openÈng generaied over £l,(KKI whith was an excellent Start to 2024. The open season
proper began on G(￿Id Friday, th¢ 2*h March. This year Iwo volunteers Created an Easter rhyming huni
around the Mansion for children, with chocolate eggs at the end. li was a bit of with a serious purpose
to encourage youngstrs io look around ¢ar¢fully. Trre are lots of Mansion features that aPFta] io children,
not least the many thpi¢tions of animals lh￿ are eoily missed.
The Gloucestershire Sknpunks re￿rned for the second year, w the beginning of May with their amazing
costum¢s, wacky garnes, and traditional entertainmeni in¢luding maypole and morris dancing. Inside the
Mansion were markel stalls selling Steampunk accessories and other craft items. Thank you to Mat Mccall
and his *am for all ihey did before and durin8 lh¢ ¢v¢ni to make it a 5ucce5s. One of the eharaeierisiics of
the Steampunks is that ihey have a deep and detail¢d knowl¢d8¢ of their wiod underpinning their
enthusiasm. Our caterers ran an outside BBQ. &$ well as usual café offering to keep up with the demand.
The Steampunks have their own following. so Can be ¢redi*d wilh bringing anew and appreciative audience
to the Mansion.
The s￿ne F¢stivaL organised by Stonem&￿n5 followed in June, mainly over the weekend of lh¢ 8th and
9th. We agrted io host their Mooi and Festival at the ma￿lon reflecting our charitable atm to encourage
traditional crdft4 especia]ly stonemasonry. and ro allow the Mansion to be us¢d for such purp05e5.
Disappointingly. much of what heralded in the draft programme did not materialis¢. so there was not
enough happening io engage people for long, and some of what the￿ was had rot ken exFeCted. In general,
the Stonemasons were ple&sed with the interes¢ gener&ed and contscts mad< and regarded ihe exampl¢ of
Irish drystone wallin& and the ternporary round I￿lSe. basedon a neolithic Strucnw< as useful teaching aids.

A wami evening in Augusi encouraged a record audience sitting outside ihe m￿s1on io enjoy the Festival
Players. production ofA Midsummer Nights. Dream. In S¢pi¢mtKr w¢ took part in th¢ annual Heritage
Open Day by otTering free access to the Mansion for one day only. which w&s w¢ll att¢nd¢d.
In the same month the Mansion's excellent acoustics were used to g(x)d eff¢ci by two Gloucesier
Community choirs. Visitor5 enjoyed the singing which ￿￿Id be Iwd all over the house.
Early October brought the Brewtry Weeken￿ th¢ only lim¢ visitors have an OPFX)rtunity to see the
unfinished brewery and the servants. quarters in th¢ north rang¢. The area is usually oui of Eounds Eecause
of the risk of disturbing the breeding bai ￿lonI¢s. This year the Mansion Café offered beer tastings to
complement the theme. The C￿1 of the s¢ason wne with ten days of Hallo%sEen Spooky Cellars and
Golden Pumpkin trail. It was very successful in t¢ms of numlxrs. enjoyment and profithbility.

ar rolling maintenance Schedule. in which some years are mor¢ expensive ihan oth¢rs, so th¢ res¢rve
grows in the less expensive y¢ars kn fund the costlier Or￿S. Much of the maintenance buTden would ease
with full Conserv￿lon. For exampk. the aros that have been conservell such &$ ihe ironing roof. axe
no longer ihe regular drain on money that they used to b¢.
We applied to ihe World Monuments Fund for inclusion on their W￿ch List 2025. a biannual list of
endangered historic sites. We passed ihe first sith'ng aftd were visiied in May. bui did not progress further.
In faci. only one project from the UK was clklsen. The ¢omp¢tition came from five continents and the

The Bath College slonemasot)ry students completed the external Cheese R￿)M door surround. They also
repaired the E&siem Buttress, and started work on unblocking and repairing ihe east window in th¢ Chee
Room itself. The students practise what tky have learnt ￿ college. under supervision. and the Mansion
Ixnefits from their ¢ons¢rYation work.
Other students from Bath Coll¢8¢, have S￿CIal Educational Need& helped out Operations. Manager
with fencing, flooring. kitchen wall panels, and wnstructing café furniture. We were delighted ihgt they
found the work exFerien¢e worthwhil¢ and enjoyable. We would like to continue to develop this type of
activity &$ part of our community outreach prngramme.
The Ston¢masons' Guild left the Mansion after six years. The lastappreniice complded his training. and
Master Mason had pr¢viously decided not to Start afresh with a new cohort. It has been appropriate io have
stonemason5 practising their crafl at the mansio￿ and the sound of ￿One bcirlg chiselled added atmosphere.

2024 has been an atypi¢aI year for the Greater Horseshoe bats. They did well ov¢r the winter. bjt cold and
rainy nights in late May and e￿lY June led to a lack of insects. $0 the bats becam¢ hungry and stressed.
When the mothers ￿e noi well fed. the young tend to b¢ bom l*er, and fiThJ it harder ￿ survive because
they have le5S tirne to complete their gr0￿h and stor¢ f* before the wnter. In most years the spread or
birth dates for the pups is about 28 days. In 2024 there was a wide distribution extending over 37 days wilh
an Average at 3ffth June. Fortunately. there w&s ample f¢y)d in lak summer. 50 those bat pups survived
were in a good c¥)ndiiion to face the wintr Friod.
The bats bertefitted from a fiv¢-year grant of £3.332 per annum to heat the maternity r￿Sts and
hikrnaculum. whi¢h ￿ntribU*S signifi¢antJy to their Welfa￿ and to pay an expert for advic¢ and
moniioring.
In Colla￿1￿¢10n wilh Roger Ransome. and following the ¢xiension to the company's aims and objects in
2020 to supwrt our Greater Horseshoe and other bat colonies. we have been l¢)oking for a way ￿ fund
Roger's continuing research of the Mansion's ba￿ which h&5 cOntin￿d for over sixty years. We hope to
have something ￿sitIve to rep)rt
Risk Management
Financial r￿kS w¢ ¢onsidered at meding of ihe Financ¢ Committe¢. The remii of the H¢alth and
Safety Committee is to monitor and advise on thos¢ type5 of risks. The Fabric Committee focuses on risks
relating to th¢ building. All three r¢p)rt Trusttts. A ch￿k11S1 is ￿MPle*d by the Dury Mana8¢r
every o￿n day, iyfore ihe public arrives.
The reorganisation of local government is a new risk factor because the Mansion is owned by Stroud
Disiria Council. whi¢h also provides some financial supp)rt. The changes will involve new ownership of
Ihe MaJJsion because it is envisaged that SDC will merge with other loca] Councils to fomi a new Unitary
Authority. There 14 however. a breathing space OftW￿three years during which to understand And adapt
to ttrLe implications.

significantly reduced. indeed, the caterers owe the charity unpaid ftes. We have taken the actions available
to us, but what¢v¢r (he eventual outcome. the 2024 accounts show a shortfall. Even with this loss,
however. our general reserves 5stnt up by £10.000, suggesting a degree of resilienc¢. W¢ ar¢ vigilant.
