Group Scout Leaders Report
The Squirrel Scouts, which are those youngsters aged 4 to 6 years, was initially a joint venture with the 4[th] Hiltingbury Scout Group. In September the drey – collective name for a group of squirrels – separating into two dreys one based at the Ramalley and the other at Hiltingbury. Some of the squirrels have now returned and our numbers are up to 16.
The squirrel, beaver, cub and scout sections all have exciting programmes specifically for their age and stage. This can be pancake making for the squirrels, visiting the planetarium for the beavers, ambulance station for the cubs to sub aqua for the scouts. Squirrels are led by Georgina and her team, Heather and Jem run the beavers, Simon and his team are in charge of the cubs while Mark with Neil, Peter, Meg and Lawrie direct the scouts
Plants at the rear of the Hall are maturing thanks to Hazel, Sue and Jo as well as parental work parties. Beavers and cubs used the planters at the side of the building to grow potatoes, broad beans and tomatoes which they took home to cook.
Cranbury Park Scout Campsite was the venue in October for our Group Camp. The tents were pitched by the leaders on

Friday so when the Beavers, cubs and scouts arrived they went straight into activities. The troop were inspired to do the expedition award, which had lapsed during the Covid era, using the campsite as their base.
amazing refreshment base at the County Scout events such as the Mud Run in the spring, County AGM in the summer and the Fright Night in the autumn. They provided over 400 bacon rolls at the Mud Run and a similar number of drinks, not for them disposable mugs but environmentally friendly China wear.
Thank you to all our leaders at Ramalley, their commitment is legionary, their ingenuity with the programme is exemplary and they have a great sense of humour. The Chief Scout has recently authorised the Award for Merit to Jemma Gillam and the Bar to the Award of Merit to Sue Burnett. Congratulations to you both.
District section events have recommenced with the Mustard Trophy last November for the scouts, this is a night navigation hike; Christingle services for the squirrels, beavers and cubs; Scrap heap challenge for the cubs. More are planned for later this year.
A special thank you to our young leaders in Squirrels: Dominic, Josie, Mae, Thomas and William; in Beavers: Chris, Millie and Zack; in Cubs there is Freya, then Scouts: Ollie. Being nearer the age of the young people they are able to ensure that the activity or event is achievable, enjoyable and above all having fun in a safe environment. We are grateful that several of these have continued well beyond their time for the Duke of Edinburgh’s award commitment.
The fundraising team which include Leaders and often their families do an
There is a drainage issue at the scout hall which became a major problem in the spring with the water table at a high level, a report is awaited, until we know the cost of any remedial work then subsequently the sound reduction work in hall and the storage racking is on hold.
I am indebted to Rachel for all the work behind the scenes especially dealing with our hirers; to William for taking on the treasurer’s role; to Chris for his time maintaining the building: to Michelle for the waiting lists and to Hazel for being quartermaster as well as supporting both cub and scout sections.

Group Treasurers Report
This is the first year since I have took over from Catriona as the group treasurer, and I am glad to report the year ended 31 December 2023 was another great year for the group in the Scout Hall.
We have introduced new payment collection method using OSM platform, from membership fee to event fee. I truly believe this has improved the user experience for the parents, making it easier for the leaders to keep track, and also reduced administration time. At the same time we have also signed up for the Sumup card machine, allowing us to take credit card payment during events, which has proved to be very successful.
The Group generated income of £29,198, this was a reduction from prior year. However this was generated in lieu of any grant receipt, demonstrating that we are in a good position of being selfsufficient. Most of our income are generated from membership subscriptions (33%) and hall hire (45%), with the rest mainly from donation as well as income generate from events.
The annual expenditure was £24,308 which included improvement work for the shelfing, building maintenance, as well as the day to day running including cleaning and utilities. Expenditure also include admin cost of using our GoCardless and Sumup facilities to collect payment as well as building and liabilities insurance.
After accounting for the income and expenditure, the group had a net income of £4,890 which is very good result.
At the end of the financial year the Group’s balance sheet monetary assets
showed £19,380, which is an improvement from prior year. .
A breakdown of the 2023 accounts is shown below and overleaf.

The past year has seen the Squirrels being very busy. Kate and I decided to lead our own dreys and the 2nd started the year with 12 Squirrels, one Young Leader and 3 great team members to help support the drey. We have done lots of things both at the Scout Hall, on walks and at Cranbury Park in the sunshine and the rain. We have had a number of Squirrels move up to Beavers and two new Young Leaders join us too.
In February we had a fab Dance Event. It was run by Annaleigh and the Squirrels were taught a number of street dance moves. It was great fun and good to see the Squirrels doing something different.
We also joined the 2nd Beavers at the Winchester Science Museum which was an interesting evening out. The Squirrels listened well to the talk in the
Planetarium and then had a great time exploring all the hands-on activities that are around the Science centre.
I think the highlight of the year was our trip to Scouting the Zoo at Marwell Zoo. It was a long day, the weather was fabulous for us and the Squirrels were very well behaved. We saw all sorts of animals, the tiger, the snow leopard, the
flamingos, the pygmy hippo, lots of zebras and a great exhibition from the rhinos!! We took part in a craft activity and had a good half an hour looking at lots of items in the Education Centre. It was a truly memorable day and the Squirrels didn’t complain at all about the heat or the amount of walking they did.
We have been very lucky to be joined by a new leader, Andy, who has stepped in to help run the drey with me and the team. He has come from Southampton Scouts and it is great to have him on board with us all. We have also been joined by some Squirrels from 4th Hiltingbury Squirrel drey and 2 Young Leaders but we have said goodbye to a great team member, Anna, who has moved up to Beavers with her daughter.
I would like to extend my thanks to all the team members and parents who support our drey in lots of different ways. A big thank you goes to the young Squirrels who engage with lots of different things, challenge themselves and try new things, without them we wouldn’t have a drey.

Squirrel Leader
This has been another busy scouting year , we managed over 15 badges and have undertaken a huge number of activities hiking ,creating (winners of 2023 Beaver Craft Competition ), gardening, Christingle and camping to name a few. We have spent a lot of time at Cranbury park doing what Beavers do best getting wet and dirty ! We are looking forward to a joint Wet night at end of this term with 3rd Chandlers Ford Beavers.
The unit was thankful to have spent some joint time with the other sections on joint evenings. We enjoyed a group camp in September 2023, a fun Bonfire night in November and a St Georges Fun Morning at Cranbury park
the Arrow District Olympics, our chosen country is Italy so we shall be baking Pizzas in a few weeks to get us in the Italian Spirit !
As always I have to say a HUGE thank you to my fellow leaders for all support and help they give to the unit. Finally a massive thank you to the parents and carers who support us in so many ways.
We are already planning ahead for next year with more ideas to make scouting as inspiring as we can
Heather Callum (Baloo)
Beaver Leader
Visitors from a Community Nurse to a professional Photographer have helped us gain badges. Trips to the Winchester planetarium, Solent Air museum and almost as popular the hike to local chip shop. This year has felt very international as we celebrated Chinese New Year and in just few short week be taking part in

We have had a very busy and exciting year including the opportunity to attend two different camps.
Over the year our evenings have included a varied set activities, all related to badge work in one way or another, among these were:
- visiting Winchester Science Centre, Eastleigh Ambulance Stn
We have also had 3 more Cubs achieve their Chief Scout Silver Awards.
None of this would be possible without the hard work of the whole cub team, so a big thank you to them all.

This year the troop numbers have remain stable with four new members joining and four scouts successfully moving on to Explorers.
The Scouts have spent the year involved in a range of activities both in the hut, outside, and sometimes both. We have been hiking, played widegames, spent time ‘in space’ learning how difficult it is to be an astronaut, took time to iron their neckers, learnt to read maps, whiled away an evening learning some new card games (spoons was my favourite) and even took the plunge and had a go at scuba diving.
Young people and food are never far apart and we have made many things from simple sausages on an open fire, to a stir fry and apple fritters on stoves, along with peppermint creams at Christmas.
The scouts have looked beyond the UK to understand where their food and clothing comes from, how far it has travelled and considered the potential impact on the environment, they also built three very different types of fire learnt why each method is used in different parts of the world.
We spent a very enjoyable time with the rest of the group at Cranbury Park, when 6 Scouts completed their Expedition Challenge, whilst the other member of the troop learnt to use knives, axes, and, made woggles in the Group’s colours.
As part of Arrow District, we have competed against 16 other troops in a night hike around the area, finishing in the early hours of Sunday and sleeping over in another group’s hut. In addition 9 scouts, one leader and one young leader will be travelling to Kandersteg in Switzerland this summer as part of the District expedition.
During the year the Scouts have gained over 100 different awards including the Chief Scouts Gold Award achieved by Benji Pike.
As always my thanks goes to you as parents for your support, and also to the other leaders and helpers Neil, Hazel, Simon, Peter, Meg and Lawrie without whom the troop would not be able to provide the range of activities and experiences it does.
