The Charity for the Emolument of the Chaplain of St Edward, King & Martyr, Cambridge

Annual Report to the Charity Commission

2022-2023

The Trustees for the year were:

Representing Trinity Hall, Cambridge: Revd Dr Stephen Plant (Chair); Miss Alison Hennegan (Clerk); Dr Robert Asher.

For St Edward’s: Dr Paul Anderson (Church Warden); Mrs Jillian Wilkinson; Mrs Heather Rix.

The object of the Charity is the provision or augmentation of the emolument of the Chaplain of St Edward’s Church or the defraying of expenses incurred by or on behalf of the said Chaplain in the performance of the duties of his/her office and in otherwise contributing to the maintenance of public worship.

The Trustees declare that there is no conflict of interests between themselves as individuals and their role as Trustees.

During the year the Trust paid a stipend to the Vicar-Chaplain, the Revd. Dr. Mark Scarlata and to the Assistant to the Vicar Chaplain, the Revd. Dr. Matthias Grebe, proportionate to the time worked. The Trust paid additional fees for visiting clergy who had taken services to cover annual leave of clergy.

The Trust’s funds, which are held in Trinity Hall Investment Funds, at 30/06/2023 total £2,038,999. This is held in the accounts of Trinity Hall, Cambridge.

The charity trustees took several steps to improve its performance. These included the introduction of regular Trustee training and limiting limit the length of service for each trustee who is not serving ex officio to a six year term. We continue to benefit from continuity of the two clergy appointed to the Church by the Trust. We continue to match the stipend we award the two clergy to the rate of stipend paid by the Diocese of Ely to diocesan clergy.

On behalf of the Trustees,

Revd. Dr. Stephen Plant, Chairman of the Trust Dean & Runcie Fellow Trinity Hall Cambridge CB1 2DW sjp27@cam.ac.uk
