Charity
The Godalming Performing Arts Festival (formerly The Godalming Music Festival) was established by a Deed of Constitution dated 26[th] September 1963 and is registered with the Charity Commission no. 802840. The Charity’s address is c/o 2, Chinthurst Lodge, Wonersh Common, Wonersh GU5 0PR
Objects, Organisation and Activities
The object of the Festival is to encourage the education and participation of the local public in the Arts, in particular the art of music, speech, drama and dance. It is normally held over approximately four weeks in February and March at various venues in and around Godalming. Opportunities are given to local residents and school aged children to perform for an audience. All who work for the Festival do so on a voluntary basis, giving much time and experience in their roles. The Festival is affiliated to the British and International Federation of Festivals for Music, Dance and Speech.
Review of the Year 2024
The Festival continues to recover from the problems presented by the COVID pandemic which firstly affected the very end of the 2020 Festival. Volunteers are more difficult to find.
In 2024 we were able to hold sections in Dance, Organ, Speech & Drama, and Wind and Large Ensemble as well as Strings and Piano. Other sections could not take place as we lacked Section Secretaries to run them. The committee are keen in 2025 to find section secretaries to cover Singing and Choirs, and the Wind section, where the section secretary is retiring.
The sections held were all successful, especially our dance section at St Catherines School where we had a record number of entries. We continued to use St Hilary’s School for Piano, and Wind. Holy Trinity

Church, Bramley proved to be a very successful venue for the string section.
The booking system called Run My Festival continued to work well. We also provided two card readers for ticket and programme sales at all our venues.
We welcomed Michael Summers as our new Treasurer on the retirement of Angus Palmer who is now our independent examiner. We also welcomed Naomi Grant as Piano section secretary and Mark Parton who agreed to run the Speech and Drama section. At our AGM we will be saying goodbye to Amanda Rockilll our Wind Section Secretary who will be retiring after several years of active participation.
Administration demands continued with the Chairman and Vice Chairman having to keep on top on BOPA Licences for all the sections held, DBS checks on all that needed them as well as keeping up to date all our policies.
The Festival is financially secure with hopefully more sections operating next year provided we can obtain more volunteers to fill various roles in the years to come. We continue to be indebted to the generosity of the Entrants, Sponsors, local businesses and all our supporters.

Independent Examiner’s Report to the Trustees
I report on the accounts for the year ended 30[th] April 2024
Respective responsibilities of Trustees and Examiner
The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year (under Section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the act) and that an independent examination is required. It is my responsibility to:
-
Examine the accounts under Section 145 of the 2011 Act
-
Follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission (under Section 145 (5)(b) of the 2011 Act
-
State whether particular matters have come to my attention
Basis of Independent examiner’s report
My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by a charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as Trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’ and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statements below.
Independent examiner’s statement
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
-
Which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect the following requirements have not been met:
-
a. To keep accounting records in accordance with Section 130 of the 2011 Act, and
-
b. To prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and to comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act
Or
- To which in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
