**MUSICAL DIRECTOR: RALPH WOODWARD PATRON: THE LORD FAIRHAVEN** ## **ANNUAL REPORT 2021-2022** ## **Objectives of the Fairhaven Singers** The object of the Fairhaven Singers are to promote, improve, develop and maintain public education in and appreciation of the art and science of music in all its aspects by the presentation of public concerts and recitals and by such other ways as the choir through its committee shall determine from time to time. ## **Structure** The Fairhaven Singers is a membership organization managed by an elected committee, as set out in its constitution. Chair: Robin Higgons Treasurer: Paul Ashley Secretary: Emily Dourish Member: Andrew Smith Member: Karen Hébert Musical Director (ex officio): Ralph Woodward ## **Activities** _The following reports are based on the reports presented at the AGM on 30 September 2022_ ## _**Chairman’s Report**_ The choir has come through the pandemic in remarkably good shape, and we have been able to pick up the momentum of our performances with gusto. We have even managed to fit in concerts which had to be suspended during the pandemic. While the life of the choir seems much calmer now, last Autumn’s term was extremely difficult with another surge in covid and the public health responses making organisation very problematic. I would like to thank Ralph for successfully managing our way through the challenges. I would also like to thank Hugh Hunt for all his unseen assistance behind the scenes that enabled the Goodall and Christmas concerts to go ahead as planned. The busy performance and recording programme over the last year, combined with further exciting concerts coming up means that our cash reserves will have taken a hammering by next March. This is planned for and will be discussed by Paul. The Committee felt that the best use of our resources was to fund an exciting return to our normal programmes and put the covid challenges behind us (hopefully). The forward planning will enable our reserves to be rebuilt steadily without (at the moment) requiring draconian action. With respect to Covid, we are assuming that life has now returned to normal and that no special precautions will be required going forward. However, we continue to monitor the situation in the background (especially as we go into the winter months) and will assess the need for further action if necessary. _Registered charity no. 802542_ 1 Naturally I would like to thank the committee for all their hard work and sage guidance, and I would also like to thank the choir members for their continuing commitment to the choir. It is good to see the efforts of Ralph and the committee matched by your continuing commitment. Looking forward, Ralph will be discussing our plans for the next couple of years. He is building a really exciting and varied programme which will entertain and keep us busy for the foreseeable future. Our aspirations to become / remain the leading amateur chamber choir in the area are alive and kicking. Finally, we always welcome interest in members joining the committee. Cecilia McDowall premiere in Trinity Autumn 2023 Possible Todd Requiem in York Minster _Ralph Woodward_ ## _**Treasurer’s Report**_ _(the financial reports are presented separately)_ _Notes to the Income and Expenditure report_ - The choir had a deficit of £18,235 overall, compared to a surplus of £2,786 the previous year. _Registered charity no. 802542_ 2 - The General Fund (i.e. normal activities plus concerts) had a deficit of £8,159, compared to a surplus of £4,475 the previous year (when we had no concerts!). - The Dora Kemp Commission Fund had no activity last year. - The Recordings Fund had a large deficit because of the recording of _Sappho Sings_ . - The Alyson L Harvey Fund had a small deficit – the fund paid for travel to London for the recording. - The ‘Other Income/Expense’ lines at the bottom of the table refer to donations received for the Rio choir that we support, mainly at our Christmas concert. The Treasurer has inadvertently not passed on a £100 donation received later in the year – it will be passed on soon. - The usual HMRC Gift Aid refund has not yet been claimed (usually a couple of thousand pounds). This is intentional. We are changing our book-keeping software (Quickbooks Desktop is no longer supported). As we pay for the software monthly, we will make the claim for receipts up to 31 August 2022 with the records in the old software, cancel the old software, then restart the new year with the new software. ## _Notes to the Balance Sheet_ - Our assets have decreased by £20,235, attributable to: `o` The deficit in the Income & Expenditure account. `o` A decrease of 9.8% decrease in the value of the Alyson Harvey Fund investments. - The report also shows the asset balances distributed between the four funds as of 31 August 2022. - CDs are currently valued for accounting purposes at: _Full of Grace_ £5; _Todd Requiem_ £1; _Into the Stars_ £1. The CD _Blue Skies That Sparkle_ , and recipe books are valued at £0. ## _General comments on our financial performance and forecast_ Our financial position has changed substantially for the worse since last year partly from the resumption in performing concerts when audiences were still nervous about covid, and partly because we committed to making an expensive recording of our own commission, Sappho Sings. We commenced the last year with our eyes fully open, however: my notes for the AGM last year anticipated these losses. We will be performing the _St Matthew Passion_ next March, which we expect to strain our finances further. Nevertheless, our resources will rebuild between now and then, and will continue to do so thereafter. We maintain a financial forecast for the choir running a couple of years ahead. It is reassuring to note that our financial performance has followed the forecast from early last year.
