TRUSTEES ANNUAL REPORT
FOR ThE YEAR ENDED 31ST MARCH 2023
Objectives and Activiti
The object of the is to advance the education of the public in the history and heritage of the
town of Maldon, Essex and Fast Anglia
Our activities indude the exhibition of the Maldon ED)broidery, exhibitions of local anefacts,
displays of art work from local, Essex and East Anglian arttsts, and a comprehensive archive of
historical videos and photographs as well as oral history recordings. This provides a centre for
historical interest and expertise for Maldon and beyond. It contributes to the enjoyment of
educational resources for all ages. It improves the interpretauon of Maldon's history through the
stories depicted on the Embroidery and in the archive displays. Thus, importantly contributing to
the economy of the area by enhancing the social and leisure resources available to both local
tesidents and visitors to the atea.
In planning their activities, the ThLStees have kept in mind the Charity Commission guidance on
public benefit.
The work of the Trust is supported by a dedicated group of 20 volunteers lead by our Centre
Manager, and also the 7 Thistees.

Achievements and Perfonnance
The Chariry has succeeded in fulfilling the objectives as set out in the Declarauon of Th￿1. The
Thist is seeking Charitable Incor￿}ra￿ed Organisation status and the Town Council has granted us a
ten year extension ro our lease. Both are now almost at comple(ion. The Maldon W￿ltOr Infomiation
Desk is proving a valuable addition to the centre, brin8ing in both visitors from the town and further
afield for inforn]ation about what to VISIL what's on locauy etc. Schix)l and adult Visits for tall(s on
Ihe embn)idery prove popular. These can now be booked via the website. The original embroidery
booklei has been updated and is now on sale in the Centre. We have replaced the lighting over the
embroidery to LED mbes so that they are more energy efficient.
We have a new website which is much more attractive and holds a great deal of inforniation for
visito￿. This was funded by a grant from the locality fund. A monthly article appears in a local
magazine as well &$ using Fa￿book and Thyitter to advertise our events and exhibitions.
The Maldon Society have utKlated their equipment, housed in the Centre. so we now have their
considerable archive of photo￿aphS and videos on a toucFscreen. This is proving very popular with
ViSLtors as they now have easy acce55 to the archive.
The heritage weekend saw a re-enactment group create interest ID the Saxon perirf taking us back
to the time of the Battle of Maldon.
We had a full and varied progrduune of art exhibitions provided by local artists, throughout the year,
which appealed to a wide range of visito￿.
Financial Review 2022fL3
Our surplus for the Year was a satisfactory £5,920 as shown in our Annual Accounts. Our varied
programme of Exhibitions by local artists and craftsman. which continued to be very well
supponed. combined with sales from our Craft Shop, provided the main f￿ancial support for our

activiues, together with the welcome Giant from Maldon Tovrn Council of £6.500. We were also
enabled to completely upgrade our website helped by the Grant of £2,000 from the Essex County
Council Localities Fund.
Our net Funds at the Year end totalled £22.448. This is sufficient to provide working capital and to
safeguard our level of activity in the near future. However. we are faced with a ￿aterIal increase in
electricity charges when our three year contract expires in Augusl other inflauonary cost increases,
as well as uncertainty as to how well OUT Visitor numbers will hold up, and how much they will
spend in the curnt economic dimate.
Structure Governance and Management
We are governed by a Declaration of Trust dated 18th sep￿rnbel 1989 and revised on 17th March
2008. The Chariry is governed by the boaTd of nine Thtstees and the Centre run by the Manager
assisted by volunteers. The Charity works dosely with the other heritage organisations in the
