TRUSTEFS ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31ST MARCH 2022 Objectives and Activities The object of the Tt is to advance the education of the public in the history and heritage of the town of Mald0 E&sex and East Anglia. Our activities include the exhibition of the Maldon Embroidery, exhibitions of local artefacts displays of art work from locaL Essex and East Anglian artists, and a CoMprehe81ve archive of historical videos and photograplLS as well as oral hiOry recordings. This provides a centre for historical interest and expertise for Maldon and beyond. It conrributes to the enjoyment of educational resources for all ages. It improves the interpretation of Maldon's history through the stories depicted on the Embroidery and in the archive displays. In planning their activities, the Ttustees have kept in n)ind the Chaity commion guidance on public benefiL The work of the is supwrted by a dedicated group of 14 volunteers lead by our Centre Manager, and also the 7 Thistees. Achievemfflts and Perforniance The Chlty has succeeded in fulfilling the objectives as set out in the Declaration of Th1. The Thjst is seeking Charitable Incorporated Organisation status and the Town Council has granted us an extension to our lease which will come into effeci when the CIO is completed. We welcomed the Maldon Visitor Infonnation Desk into the Centre which increases visitor nujnbers. School and adult visits for talks resumed in Septetnber once Covid restrictions were lifted. Through better advertising the call for talks is increasing. Research into the embroiderers experience of being involved in the making of the embroidery continue4 and a tea party was held for them in October. This was to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the completion of the Maldon Embroidery. The 850th anniversary of the granting of Maldon's Royal Charter was aIso celebrated in conjunction with the Town CounciL The heritage weekend saw a r&enactEnent group create interest in the SaxoD period. taking back to the time of the Battle of Maldon. Improvements have been made to ow signage and vi111ty. with a life SIZ cut out of Byrhtnoth our Saxon Ealdonnan displayed outside the Centre. We had a and varied programme of art exhibitions provided by local artist4 throughout the year. which appeal(xl to a wide range of visitors. Finan(ial Review Our net surplus for the Year was a satisfactory £4.41J) as shown in our Annual Accounts. This reflecrs the welcome Teturn of Visito supporting us after reopening on 13th April after the Covid lockdown, and we also held a very active progratt]me of Exhibitions by local artists. In addition, we received very welcome Grant suppon of £5,51JJ from Maldon Town Council. To enable us to cut costs and be more efficient we now make most of our payments online Our net Charity Funds at the Year end totalled £15.81X). which is considered to be sufficient to provide adequate working capital and a reserve to safeguard our activities in the ijjllnediate but
uncertain future. We face ineaSing running costs and the SSIbIlity of decreased spending by our visitots. Strncture Governance and Managtment We are governed by a Dedaration of dated I September 1989 and revised on 17th March 2008. The Charity is governed by the board of nine TnteeS and the Centre Djn by the Manager assis(ed by volunteers. The Charity works dosely with the other heritage oanISatiOnS in the District.
