Annual Report 2024
The 77th National Schools’ Regatta ran with a full programme of events. There were a total of 1280 crews from 153 schools and clubs, which related to over 5300 competitors, 2467 in the Girls events and 2927 in the Open events.
The weather was very kind this year so enabling three days of very hardfought and competitive racing. Friday was particularly benign and with the sun shining, the J14 and J15 crews had excellent rowing conditions resulting in lots of close finishes. This year our J14 crews raced on the top half of the course, and it was lovely to see crowds of spectators gathering around the 1000m marker to cheer the crews to the line. Saturday and Sunday saw a slight cross wind and the lane draw was adjusted to compensate. The level and standard of rowing on show was superb. 61 different clubs/schools secured medals.
Spectator numbers were high once again and it was good to see the school/club marquees being packed out along the whole second 1000m of the course.
In addition to the surplus from our shop. through prudent financial planning and sensible negotiating the Regatta made a surplus that has enabled us to maintain a working reserve for future planning as well as allowing us to make good on a number of the requests for funds we received this year. All in, we have awarded grants to one school, one school rowing association, one charity and seven rowing clubs, amounts varying from £500 to £14,000, a total of £72,590. The Regatta is actively seeking out more potential projects that promote the sport amongst Juniors.
In my first year as Chair of the Regatta, I am delighted by the success and impact of NSR 2024 and I wish to express my heartfelt thanks to the wonderful group of Committee Members, who all give of their time and expertise freely and cheerfully – and very effectively. In 2025, the Regatta will return to the National Water Sports Centre at Holme Pierrepont in Nottingham. We are looking forward to it.
