## **THE TREE REGISTER OF THE BRITISH ISLES** (Registered charity no 801565) TRUSTEES ANNUAL REPORT 2020 The Tree Register of The British Isles (TROBI) is a registered charity number 801565. Its trustees are Colin Hall (Chairman),The Earl of Rosse, Lady Arabella Lennox Boyd, Maurice Foster, Jim Gardiner, Rupert Eley, Tony Kirkham MBE, Jill Butler, Roy Lancaster CBE and Thomas Pakenham. Trustees are recruited through personal recommendations. The director of the Charity is David Alderman, the Registrar is Dr Owen Johnson MBE and the Secretary is Pamela Stevenson. Its address is 77a Hall End Road, Wootton, Bedfordshire, MK43 9HL. Its website is www.treeregister.org. The Charity is managed by the Director, Registrar and Secretary. The objective of the Charity is to maintain a database or register of information on notable trees growing in Britain and Ireland, thereby promoting and informing an interest in the natural world to the public benefit. Its aim is to include every tree which is exceptional for its size, age, historical associations or rarity. Data on over 250,000 trees are recorded on the register. The Charity maintains the definitive list of where to find the largest and tallest “champion” trees, with over 72,000 trees accessible on line. Fortunately the covid pandemic and lockdowns have not adversely affected the Charity although there was less volunteer activity. In 2020, new data or updated data was recorded on 140 champion trees by Owen Johnson and other volunteers. Data on many other trees was recorded or updated. The Charity during 2020 continued to work with its partners, the Ancient Yew Group, The Woodland Trust and the European Champion Tree Forum. The Blue Label project continued to be promoted to landowners and managers for the labelling of Champion trees promoting the Tree Register. In 2020, the trustees launched an appeal to raise funds for a Bursary in memory of Vicky Schilling who died in late 2019. Vicky Schilling was one of the joint founders of the Charity and the central figure in the formative years of the Tree Register. The appeal raised over £12,000. The objective of the Bursary is to provide grants towards travel and subsistence expenses for projects that support the work of the Charity. The Charity’s unrestricted income derives mainly from members’ subscriptions and donations from supporters, the latter of which can fluctuate from year to year. In 2020, unrestricted income exceeded expenditure by £1177. The Charity’s general reserves constitute approximately two years expenditure, which the trustees consider prudent.
