## **Annual Report of All Saints’, Campton Parochial Church Council for year ended 31st December 2021.**

## **Aims and Purpose**

All Saints’ Parochial Church Council (PCC) has the responsibility of cooperating with the incumbent, the Reverend Veronica Goodman (Roni), in promoting in the ecclesiastical parish, the whole mission of the Church, pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical. The Parish had been in a vacancy from November 2019: therefore during 2021, The Reverend Goodman had pastoral oversight of the Parish from April until September when she was appointed as the Incumbent. The PCC also has the maintenance responsibilities for the Church of All Saints’, Rectory Road, Campton. The Church of All Saints’ also owns the Village Hall, which is now under a Trusteeship which pays rent to the Church and has a Management Team who hold the responsibility for the maintenance and management of the building.

## **Administrative Information**

All Saints’ Church is situated at the crossroads in the centre of the village. It is part of the Diocese of St. Albans within the Church of England. The correspondence address for the PCC is; The Secretary, c/o 115 Ampthill Road, Shefford, SG17 5BH.

The Parochial Church Council (PCC) is a charity excepted from registration with the Charity Commission. The PCC members who have served at any time from 1st January 2021 until the 31[st] December 2021 were:

Incumbent: The Reverend Veronica Goodman (Roni) – from Sept 2021

Churchwardens: Linda Garton Elizabeth Sullivan-Ash (Vice Chair)

Secretary: Geoff Gordon Treasurer: Sharon Khan Elected Members: Audrey Brand; Anne Gordon; Deborah Maggs; Karen Porteous; Sue Silver. Co-opted member: Claire Dan (Parish Safeguarding Officer)

Representatives on the Deanery Synod: Anne Gordon; Sue Silver

## **Structures, Governance and Management**

The PCC is a corporate body established by the Church of England. The PCC operates under the Parochial Church Council Powers Measure. The method of appointment of PCC members is set out in the Church Representation Rules. All church attendees are encouraged to register on the Electoral Roll and stand for election to the PCC. The PCC members are responsible for making decisions on all matters of general concern and importance to the parish including how the funds of the PCC are to be spent.

The PCC has complied, to the best of its knowledge, with the duty under Section 5 of the Safeguarding and Clergy Discipline Measure 2016 (duty to have regard to House of Bishops’ guidance) on safeguarding children and vulnerable adults. All Saints’ is registered as a dementia friendly church.

The PCC met 5 times during the year with an average attendance of 80%. Due to Covid Restrictions three meetings were remotely by Zoom. The APCM was held in the Church on April 11[th] .

## **Objectives and Activities**

The PCC is committed to enabling the Church to stand as the centre of worship in the parish and encourages members of the village community to attend services and activities held in the church which offers a warm, welcoming environment to all.

Pre-Covid particular activities were held in the Church to bring members of the community into a building which increasingly had become unfamiliar to many. An example of this was a monthly Coffee Morning which became very popular indeed. Church members were able to meet and greet neighbours; offer prayer at difficult times by encouraging the use of the Prayer Tree and by personal contact; advertise church and village activities; invite new residents to the village to attend and be advised of the regular worship services available.

The Monday evening prayer group although small was able by personal contact to assure those in distress that they were prayed for if they wished. A wooden, praying hands icon was also leant to the seriously ill for a period if it gave comfort.

By this type of activity, we felt that the light of Christ was being shown to others through practical action and enabled conversations on belief to take place.

The Covid pandemic meant that face-to-face contact was restricted and during the Church closures regular Pastoral support was offered, to those unable to access Zoom meetings, by telephone contact and by visiting those who live alone. We were unable to have our regular gatherings i.e monthy coffee mornings; Armchair Travellers; quizzes. It is expected that resumption of some activities will take place in 2022.

## **Achievements and performance**

## Worship and Prayer

All are welcome to attend our regular Services. There are 37 parishioners on the Church Electoral Roll.

Following a four month closure due to Covid in Spring and Summer 2020 and a further closure of 4 weeks in November 20 the PCC took the decision to resume regular Services within the Covid restrictions guidelines in 2021 as soon as it was practical to do so safely as many of our congregation were not at ease with the technology of Zoom services. Weekly services were therefore resumed on 28[th] Feb 2021, face masks were worn and social distancing adhered to. Doors were opened and the services were kept short. Communion in one kind was served in the pews. The majority of the congregation returned and an average congregation of 24 has been maintained. The Church building was opened from 10 am – 12 noon on Thursdays for private prayer and meditation

From January to September worship was led by the Reader, Audrey Brand, Revd. Christopher Strong PTO and Lay Leader of Worship, Deborah Maggs. In addition Revd V. Goodman (Roni) was appointed Rector in September and started to lead worship from the 19[th] Sept.

We have celebrated 2 weddings, a confirmation of wedding vows, 3 baptisms and 6 funerals in church.

Our good relationship with Campton Lower School continues although we can no longer take assemblies in person. The school held their Harvest and Nativity services in the church with restricted numbers.

The death of Prince Philip was marked by the tolling of the bell on 9[th] April and a short memorial service was held and candles were lit by

congregation and villagers who wished to mark the death of a relative during Covid.

2021 also saw us able to resume a full Remembrance Service in the presence of a Deputy Lord Lieutenant and with military personnel and their families from MOD Base within our parish.

We are also fortunate to have excellent group of Bell-Ringers under the captaincy of John Loveless. Although restricted during the pandemic, ringing has now resumed. Campton is recognised locally an excellent training tower, and we provide regular training sessions for ringers of all ages from across Bedfordshire, including initiatives to rebuild confidence and skills post-pandemic.

Unable to have the usual very-well attended Christmas Eve Carol Service in the church, this year we sang carols outside. The evening was a very wet one but 50 to 60 stalwarts sang lustily and very harmoniously despite the weather.

The annual Advent Festival which we share with the parish community also went ahead and we are grateful to all who organized it and took part.

Finally thanks are also due to all of those people who volunteer for so many jobs during the year to keep the Church and Churchyard in good order with cleaning and maintenance. The dedicated churchyard working party has been particularly busy this year. We are also fortunate to have some very talented flower arrangers, who beautify the church on Sundays and on special occasions throughout the year,
