Achievements and performance
Regular weekly Choir rehearsals started again in January 2022 post
Covid arKI led to successful Spring. Summer and Christrnas concerts in
2022.

achlevements of the charlty
durlng the year
Post Covid the Choir's membership had decreased from c 120 members
ai the end of 2019 to c 80 members In January 2022. By the end ol thè
year membership had increased to some 90 rnembers and a larger
concert attendance in December gave rise to hopes that the budget
deficit in 2022 coukl be substants'ally reduced in 2023.

Financial review
The Choir has no fixed overheads or ongoing contractual expenditure.
Income from subscnptions and ticket sales * concerts no longer covers
expenditure on rehearsals and concerts, so further fundraising through
increased ticket sales for concerts and more new member subs¢ripiions
is required in 2023
Brief statement of the
charity's policy on reservo8
The Choir has sufficient funds to support its activities for some six
months without any income such that if for any reason there was a
catastrophic loss of income and expenditure continued al present levels
there would be no unfunded losses.

Chair's Report 2022
2022 was a very busy year for Rowantree Choir. We had survrved the Covid Lockdown in 2020 and then
Zoom rehearsals in 2020-21 and the Goncerns which followed that. As things loosened up, we had
eventually been able to ￿sume face to fa￿ rehearsals in the larger venue at Enfield Baptist Church in
2021. However, members were understarKlably relieved, but also a little wary, to be able to return to our
'home base, in Wellington Road Methcmjist Church for rehearsals in January 2022. Precautions were taken

members retumed during January 2022 to pick up where we had left off in March 2020- with Handel'$
Messiah. Numbers were smaller than before as some members had moved away, and others were still
concemed about singing in relatively crowded places. However, an excellent performance in March- of
the now much practised Messiah - was a s￿n that Rowantree was back up and running.
We moved into the summer temi encouraged and slightly less chilly- and began rehearsing for our
Slimmer Concert. based on Ihe theme 'Have voii Fver Been in Love. Thiq ¢ontained manv of ihe sonos that
we had begun to leam In Zoom rehearsals. Numbers at rehearsals were still below pre-covid levels. partly
as people were given the freedom to travd. so Some took long postponed holKlays and rehearsal
attendan￿ fluctuated. However by July, as we moved into a record-breaking heahvave, we were able to
perform hvo ex￿lIent Summer con￿rtS. albeit lo disappointingly small audiences. As always we must
thank our Concert Team and Front of House helpers withoul whom no concerts would ever be put on.
The Committee became ¢on¢emed about the fall in numbers of both members and audience as our coffers

was decided thal we should only perform one concert at Christmas (bmth an orchestra as usual) to keep our
costs down. It became clear that without an improvement in income the choir might even face closure in the
near future. During the sufflmer a sut>group from the Commrttee was set up to look at vtsys of making the
choir more widely known and increasing both membership and concert a￿llenceS. Part of this remrt was to
update our Website and Tenders were invited.
After a rigorous and quite lengthy competitive process, Ken Cope has been engaged to produce a new

However. reluctanlly. il was still feli necessary to plan for an increase in the membership element of
subscriptions in 2023 to give the Choir a more secure financial footing.
The Autumn tem therefore saw us back in rehearsal- and glad to welcome back one or two members who
had been unable to retum earlier due to health concerns. We also had several 'nevl members who had

helped to restore a more sociable feel to our Tuesday meetsngs.
The year ended on a high. The Christmas concert V￿nI very well and was perfomed in Enfield Baptist
Churth to a packed house - thanks to the efforts of members in invrting fn'ends and family to come and pay
to heaf US sing. It fèlt like we were finally getting back to 'nomial' after all the disruption.

## **Independent Examiner’s Report on the Accounts**

**Report to the trustees of the Rowantree Choir on the accounts for the period ended 31 December 2022.**

## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner**

The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 and that an independent examination is needed.

It is my responsibility to:

- Examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act

- To follow the procedures laid down in the general Direction given by the Charity Commissioners under section 145 (5)(b) of the charities Act

- To state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

## **Basis of independent examiner’s statement**

My examination was carried out in accordance with general Directions given by the Charity Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair’ view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

## **Independent examiner’s statement**

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:

- 1) Which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act and to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the Charities Act have not been met; or

- 2) To which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
