Report 2021

“I visit the therapy centre for weekly physio and oxygen therapy. I love the happy and friendly environment and I know the therapies help me to keep active and out of a wheelchair for longer” Mary Trimarco

OUR ORGANISATION

The therapy centre is a regional charity offering physical, emotional and social therapies for people with MS and other conditions. There are currently over 250 regular members using the charity who live within an area covering Yeovil in the West, Andover in the East, Bath to the North and Bournemouth in the South. The members are mostly those living with MS, but those with other conditions do join for therapies where we have spare capacity, particularly oxygen therapy.

Offering long term physiotherapy for members with MS and oxygen therapy for all members, the charity is a busy hive of activity. The charity also offers holistic therapies to families and carers to include massage therapy and reflexology. There is a pilates and dance class, and counselling is also available to all members. Other therapies on offer include reiki, touch therapy, cupping, and energy therapy. The charity provides a companion in the home with the MS Buddy Scheme for those living in social isolation and there is a warm and friendly purpose-built centre for social connection, relaxation and tea and cake.

Ultimately, we want to create a better quality of life for all our members, their carers and families. We understand how important it is to support the carer as well as the member, and the therapy centre strives to include everyone in need.

By offering the MS Buddy Scheme we want to reach out to those members who have become socially isolated, perhaps through an MS relapse or illness, and help them to re-engage with their community and help them back into the therapy centre for much needed therapies.

We want to provide a safe and happy space for those whose mobility and lifestyle has been compromised through ongoing illness and for them to find physical and emotional well-being in a supportive and friendly environment.

CHAIR’S REPORT

During the year 2021 we endured the very sad loss of our chairman, Richard Southwell. Richard died on Monday 26 December and had attended a remote meeting with Rosie on the previous Wednesday, showing he cared for the MS Centre very much, almost to his dying day. This charity owes a great debt of gratitude to Richard and all that he did for the Centre, his grace and kindness was endless, he is sadly missed.

The MS Centre managed to reopen under Covid restriction in July 2020 and 2021 proved to be a very complicated and challenging time for the charity. Thanks to the careful management from the team of staff working with Richard and the trustees, the MS Centre kept delivering therapies during this time.

Due to social distance restrictions most of the therapies operated at a reduced capacity and the process of allowing members in and out of the building was timed to perfection. PPE was in place at all times and the charity continued to provide the much needed service to the community we serve.

However, demand for our therapies, especially oxygen therapy, increased far beyond capacity and the trustees would like to give great thanks to the staff and volunteers for managing this very demanding situation throughout 2021.

As a self-funding charity, the MS Centre found itself at the mercy of the financial constraints of operating during a pandemic and with careful applications to local government, especially Wiltshire Council and the Wiltshire Community Foundation the charity was able to continue operating and delivered over 8,000 therapies.

Fundraising was also particularly affected, especially due to lack of public engagement, but the fantastic hard working team of staff, volunteers and members managed to keep the charity active and secured much sought funding.

The trustees would like to offer sincere thanks to the hard working team of staff, therapists and volunteers who helped to make 2021 as successful as we could have wished for. Our charity strives to bring a better quality of life to the members, their families, and carers and we will continue to flourish during 2022.

THERAPIES

We want to bring a better quality of life to all our members. We believe having regular physical, emotional and social therapies helps members to manage their health and lead a more fulfilled life.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy has a vital role to play in helping people to cope with the daily challenge of living with MS. We use an approach that enables members to:

Physiotherapy treatment programmes are only available to members with MS and are tailored to the individual needs of each person. Using the basis of careful and detailed assessments, the physiotherapist draws up a treatment regime specific to each member.

Oxygen Therapy

Oxygen is essential to every tissue in the body and any tissue injury requires oxygen for healing. Breathing oxygen under pressure causes the dilated and leaky blood vessels in MS to constrict back to normal size and reduce the swelling. At the same time, more oxygen is delivered into the bloodstream, increasing the amount available to help undertake repair.

Massage Therapy

Massage is known to improve circulation. It relaxes tense muscles and is an excellent way to unwind and help restore a sense of well being and balance. Massage therapy for people with MS is an excellent way for individuals to relieve some of the tension that lives in their muscles on a daily basis.

Pilates

Pilates exercises are low-impact but work every part of the body, which has a huge number of benefits for people with MS. Building strength and control of the muscles helps support the joints and can improve balance, posture and body awareness. It is particularly effective on tense or tight muscles and can help you to relax and just generally get everything moving.

Reflexology

Reflexology aims to correct the three negative factors of congestion, inflammation and tension.

Reflexology is a complementary therapy. The aims of this therapy are to improve and strengthen some of the weaknesses in the body that are caused through living with MS. In particular, bladder and bowel function improvements have been felt by many of our members. These improvements are believed to be achieved by targeting the problem area through ‘reflex’ points found in or around the feet and hands.

Counselling

Counselling is an opportunity to talk through and share the emotional concerns and feelings people are experiencing. The counsellor’s role is to be supportive and to encourage people to find ways forward during turbulent times. Counselling can help with:

FUNDRAISING

As a completely self-funding charity we are tasked with bringing in all running costs through donations and grants. We are supported greatly by our members donations and the fundraising department is always busy. However, 2021 was still in the grips of the pandemic and fundraising was limited under social restriction conditions.

Among the few events of 2021 one of our members, Paula Carr, celebrated her 70th birthday and raised funds by completing a 15,000 ft skydive. Rosie Eliot celebrated ten years at the helm of the charity and completed a 10k sponsored run raising over £4,500.

The High Sherriff of Wiltshire and Swindon, Sir Charles Hobhouse, chose the MS Centre as one of his charities of the year and hosted a garden party in wonderful sunshine at Monkton Farleigh Manor House. Lots of funds were raised, primarily through the fantastic dog show.

We received grants from the following organisations:

Leonard Laity Stoate Charitable Trust National Lottery Community Fund Wiltshire Community Foundation Warminster Town Council Trowbridge Town Council Wiltshire Council Radstock Lions

A huge thank you to everyone who completed an event and raised much needed funds for us.
