OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
Public benefit
The company continued to provide activty for public benefit under its Charitable objects. In preparing this
report, the Trustees have complied WFlh their duty to have regard to the Charity Commission's public benefit
guidance.
Following the Covid-19 tockdowns in 2020 and 2021, it ha8 taken hvo years to retum to a normal 16vel of
business and Income. Last year 2022123 started the recovery, but it was slow. In the year now under
consideration, we have almost reached a comparable posltlon to 'pre-Covid' 2019120 for visltor numbers and
admi88ions income. Community groups which regularly hire the Mu8eum for meetings have thrived. and
Some new groups have 8tart¢d to Use th• Museum.
Exhibitlons
In the main gallery space we continued to display Made in Bath, an exhibition 8howing the wide range of
creative businesse8 in Bath, curated and designed by Mytton William8 d68ign and branding consumancy. By
8howing examples of innovation and creativty in the clty, the Museum can illustrate how the pa8t history of
Bath'8 working IW8 connect8 to the present.
In the Hud80n Gallery 8howed Faco to Face, an 8xhibitlon of portrait photographs from the Bath studlo of
Tom Carlyle Leaman taken In the 18908 and 19008. The Mu88um acquired the glas8 plate neg8tTrve8 from a
donation some years ago,. many of the plates have a surname on the back and a group of volunteers
researched as many of th8 n8me8 as possible using Cen8U8 and other publi8hed record8, identifying about
40 8torie8 of working liv88 in Bath and where these people Ilved. Thank8 to the hlgh-qualrty dlgitl8ation of the
image8, detsi18 of clothing and acce88orie8 could be examined very c108ely, 80 the exhibition a180 explored
the busines8e8 and shop8 where they V￿uld have bought their clothe8, drawing on advertisement8 in the Ioc81
Bath Chronicle newspaper of the period, A Study Day exploring them68 in the exhibition wa8 wall attended.
Over the winter 2023-24, we di8played some of the portrait photograph8 of contemporary worker8 in 88th
from the All Day Long.. Bath in 50 Portraits project (2022) along8id8 80me of the Vlctorian and Edwardian
portralts - these provided a fasclnating contrast.
The wlnch rnade by local fimi Stothert & Pltt was conserved and re-painted (work funded by the Frlends of
Museum of Bath at Work) In 2023. The Bath Stone Group of Limpley Stoke generou81y donated a large block
of Bath 8tone to support the wlnch for display in the courtyard at the front of the museum, and it wa8 installed
in MarchApril 2024.
The Bath Po8ts1 Museum sadly cloged at the end of 2023, and some exhibition dlsplay case8 and other item8
vRre donated to U8 by the Postal Mu8eum'8 tN8tee8.
Events
Talk8 and film 8creenlng8 were held throughout the year.
The Angu8 Buchan8n Memorlal Lecture wa8 held In May 2023, a joint event with Bri8tol Indu8trial
Archaeological S¢xiaty (BIAS). Dr Ca8sie Newland from Bath Spa University 8poke on indu8trial and
historical archaeology.
During Bath Fringe Festival 8créened a numbar of film8 With introductory talk8 and post-film digcu88ions

Bath), 'Winstanley', 'Rank & File,, and 'Eric Raviliou8: Drawn to Wal.
On 22 July a traditional style summer fete was held jointly with neighbourlng Christ Church. This enabled the

REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2024
OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
We participated in the national Heritage Open Days festival on 16 and 17 September with free film screenings
of Tim Plestevs 2011 film Way of the Morris, about the Adderbury Morris side and the wtder origins and
history of Morris dancing. During th8 local Museums Waek at October half-term there were film screenings of
documentaries relating to industrial and urban heritage including 'Traffic in Towns,, a public infomiation film
about th8 1963 Buchanan report.
The annual Michael Cro89 Lècture in October featured historian Colin Fisher on 'Bath Livesllndian Lives.. Bath
and the Sub-Contln8nt 18th century to the 20th Century,.
Project8
We successfully applied for a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund for the 'Costing the Earth, project,
V￿rkIng with local history groups and other community groups during 2023124. The resulting exhibltlon will be
shown in 2024 and examine8 the18gaci88 - both good and bad - of Bath's industrialisation since 1700. The
exhibitlon wlll be presented on ten cardboard cube8, each 1 metre square, and Ihe fundlng has also allowed
the raprinting and updating of tha highly 8ucces8ful 2015 exhlbltlon 'Knowing Your Placo,.
A grant from the A880ciation of Independent Mu8eum8 (AIM) in December 2023 enabled u8 to undertake a
project which we have want8d to do for several yaar8. Working with BEMSCA (Bath Ethnic Minority Senior
Citizens A88ociation), 'Moving Stories, involves interview8 wlth the elders who attend the group about thelr
experiances as the fir8t g8neration of migr8nt8 from the Caribbean islands who Settled in Bath in the 19508
and 19608. The project focusas on the jobs they did when they arrNed, how they found place8 to live, and
how they bullt a community- the Rainbow Steel Band, founded in Bath in the late 19505 by Mr Hallam Ifill and
stlll working today, Is jusi one example. The oral history material will ba presented in 8xhibi&ion format with
portralt photograph8 of the partlclpant8.
W8 have wanted to imprové our y￿b51t8 for some timè, to address functionality, navigation, and the look and
feel of the Slte. In 2023124 we commlssloned Chr13 Dawson of Tall Hat Design, a local web builder, to create
and design a new webslte and migrate the old content. Thls has given much improved Speed and flexlbility.
and volunteers have been trained to input and upload ngw content. We contlnue to V￿rk wtth our prevlou8
web master, Barry Hall, on exhibition and print design.
Building improvements
Several improvements have been made durSng the year. The Frlend8 of the Mu8eum of Bath at Work
contributod to the cost of gravel for the large courtyard area In front of the building, improving the look and
welcome. The large maple tree at the front was pollarded to restrict the height and spread and ensure
healthy groW(h. Out8ide lightlng and emergency lighting have been replaced with more energy-efficient
products which enhance the building whilst not causing light pollution nui88nc8 to neighbouring propertie8.
Inside the building a new cctv system has been in8talled with four cameras monitoring key areas and
monitors behind the ticket desk. The lighting and cctv, and some other small works, were enabled by a grant
from the We8t of England Combined Authority (devolved Government Levelling-up funding).
Strategic business planning
Throughout 2023, the Museum Director and Trustees spent time on preparation for the Museum Accr8ditation
submission to Arts Council England. Museum Accreditation is an important 'quality mark, that confimis
good standard of operation in respect of museum curatlon and overall management. The portfolio of
evidence was submitted in January 2024 and Accreditation was confimied in May 2024.
In Summer 2023 there was Opportunity to apply for a grant from SW Museum Development for strategiG and
organisational development. We were successful in being awarded a small grant, and worked with consultant
Sam Hunt between August 2023 and January 2024 on 'Managing Future Change,, identifying organisational
strengths and weaknesses, opportunttlos and threats, and producing an action plan for addressing these
issues. The key action to come out of this process was the decision to apply for substantial funding from the
National Lottery Heritage Fund. The application covers three years, wot* autumn 2024-autumn 2027 and was
developed February-April 2024 (the outcome will be known in August 2024).

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
Alongside work on the National Lottery Heritage Fund applIcat￿n, we also re-wrote the Museum's Business
Plan 2024-2027, reflecting the agreed actions arising from the 'Managing Future Change, process.
In November 2023 we were pleased to be given years of unrestricted grant funding from the Roper
Family Charitable Trust, a Bath-based trust - £10,000 in 2023124 and £10,000 in 2024125.
We have inrtiated a campaign to encourage legacy giving, targeting Friends of the Museum and regular
supporters.
During the year we have trfed to recruit additional Trustees, as our previou8 Treasurer Jeremy Hall re8igned
In 2023 and another Trustee wlshes to stsnd down in 2024. It has proved challenging to attract candidate8
because a small charity such as ours need$ Trustee8 Wlth the time to contribute a significant amount of work.
