STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT
Governing document
The governing document is the society’s constitution dated 5 July 2022.
Constitution of Charity
The charity is a society.
Trustee Selection Methods
The President, President Elect, Secretary, Treasurer, Newsletter Editor and other ordinary members of the Committee shall be elected at the Annual General Meeting. Nominations may be made by the Committee or by any two members and shall be sent, together with the written consent of the Nominee, to the Secretary not less than two months before the Annual General Meeting. Such nominations shall be circulated with a notice of that Meeting. Members unable to attend shall be entitled to vote by post. If other nominations are not received for the filling of vacancies, the Committee’s nominees shall be deemed elected.
Any vacancy occurring on the Committee other than by retirement may be filled by a member to be co-opted by the Committee.
The Committee may co-opt other members as it sees fit.
OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document
The British Society for Dermatological Surgery (BSDS) are the UK leaders in the field of Dermatological Surgery. The purpose of the Society is to promote, for the public benefit, interest in and knowledge of Dermatological Surgery.
The BSDS have a range of meetings and courses that run throughout the year and offer fellowships and awards. The BSDS provide resources, such as surgical log books, case studies and peer reviews for the benefit of medical professionals. They have also produced minimum standards documents and position statements on issues relating to Dermatological Surgery.
A scientific meeting relating to the objects of the Society shall be arranged at least once a year by the Executive Committee. One such meeting shall be held in association with the Annual General Meeting. Contributions to scientific meetings shall be regarded as private unless permission for publication is given specifically .

ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE
Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year
Dermatological surgery continues to be an increasingly popular subspecialty with the BSDS membership continually growing. Currently there are over 400 members, with 245 ordinary member and 81 trainee members.
The BSDS is now approaching 40 years in 2023, facilitating over 5 courses each year; 2 clinical meetings; an executive committee of 15 members; a modernised functioning website and two Executive Officers.
The core focus of the BSDS continues to be education and training and the following events took place between July 2021 and June 2022:

08.11.2021 Annual Surgery Workshop , held at Aston University, Birmingham over three days. Chaired by Drs Aaron Wernham, Irshad Zaki and Paul Gazzani: This practical based surgical course was attended by 152 Delegates and 26 teaching faculties.

19.11.2021 BSDS 17th Annual Trainee Day , Organised by Dr Brogan Salence, BSDS Trainee Representative, and attended by 29 delegates in a hybrid format from London.

17.03.2022 Clinical Meeting , held virtually and chaired by Dr Thomas Oliphant: The Theme of this meeting was: ‘Raising standards in dermatological surgery and cutaneous oncology’ attended by 152 delegates with guest speakers Drs Dominic Tabor, David De-Berker, Adam Bray, David Brass, Neil Rajan and Nour Kibbi.
Awards and Prizes
Medical Student Essay Prize
In Jan 22 Dr Sukhmunni Johal, studying at Oxford University won £300 for their essay on “What beneficial changes has the pandemic made to dermatological surgery?
In Jul 22 Dr Jessica McKeever, studying at the University of Dundee won £300 for their essay on “You’re on mute! – Potentials and pitfalls with remote teaching in skin surgery”
Traveling Fellowship Award
In December 2021 Dr David Rutkowski was awarded £1,000 to further their international studies and research taking place over an extensive 2-week observership period with Dr Stan N. Tolkachjov, MD, FAAD, FACMS in Dallas, Texas
Trustee renumerations and reimbursements
No trustees were remunerated for services provided for and on behalf of the charity.
The total amount of trustee expense reimbursements occurring in the period amount to £279.10 with 1 trustee.

FINANCIAL REVIEW
Total receipts for the year were £177,364 the majority of which related to the annual surgery workshop. Total expenditure, including asset purchases, for the year amounted to £177,771 and the net result was a decrease in cash held of £407 year on year.
Policy on reserves
The Society’s reserves are maintained in order to cover the prospect of 9 years of loss of income, particularly with respect to staff costs and potential future pandemic causing hardship.

Independent Examiners Report to the Trustees of British Society for Dermatological Surgery for the year ended 30 June 2022
I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity for the year ended 30 June 2022 which are set out on pages one to seven.
Responsibilities and basis of report
As the charity’s trustees you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’).
I report in respect of my examination of the charity’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
Independent examiner's statement
I have completed my examination. I confirm no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by Section 130 of the Act; or
-
the accounts do not accord with those accounting records,
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
