## About Scarborough DAG
_Aims and objectives_
_Association is established to benefit those persons in Scarborough and surrounding districts (the area of benefit) who are substantially and or permanently disabled by providing, or encouraging the provision of, services that facilitate independence in daily living activities, active participation in and full integration into society._
- _To promote the relief of all disabled persons within the area of benefit and to assist those persons by the provision of a direct information and advice service_
- _‘To assist disabled people in Scarborough and District to achieve maximum independence and integration into society by providing services, information and advice’_
Scarborough and District Disablement Action Group seeks to fulfil its mission statement by providing assistance to secure comprehensive and up to date disability information. This is achieved through:
- The group’s helpline Publications
- Sharing information Representation at a local level
The group’s services help to improve the quality of people’s lives by:
- Alleviating poverty
- Enhancing social interaction
- Improving health, well-being and quality of life
- Promoting choice, independence and equality of access to services
- Promoting the views and opinions of disabled people
- Ensuring that disabled people have an effective voice in local and national decision making
- Communicating a positive image and perception of disabled people

## Report from the Chair
My report this year is all about numbers
DAG this year is 35 years old which is a huge achievement, we aim to hold a special event to celebrate DAG at 35 with a event celebrating volunteers and volunteer groups in the local area coinciding with National Volunteers Week.
DAG has loyal volunteers who come in day after day week by week make sure DAG can run and I am grateful for their work and devotion that they have .I am also dedicating this report to past volunteers, staff and trustees who I am sure making it to 35 years would be very happy with cuts and their hard campaign work they did to keep DAG alive.
Another number is 32 which I’m not sure Tim will thank me for but Tim is celebrating 30 years at DAG which is a huge milestone.
The next number is 15 which is my 15[th] year as chair, It is a honor to be a part of DAG milestone and be chair when DAG reaches 35, We have DAG archive full of old annual reports including the 1[st] annual report, it is a honor to be Chair and hopefully I am doing previous chairs proud and continue their legacy by making sure DAG is still here and it is a honor again to lead the board and trustees making sure the board is run effectively and the members skills are being used effectively and recruit new members.
It is also an honor to still have Paul with DAG, who was instrumental in helping get DAG set up all those years ago and work alongside with to make sure we hit our charitable aims and also keep the DAG coffers.
It has been great this year meeting up with old friends from early days at DAG such as Andrew and talking about DAG great that Andrew is now back with DAG and on the board, it’s been lovely working with new trustees such as Caroline who has been great in seeking new income ideas and helping with making the charity a much better for the public, also it has been nice to chat with Phil Mort over a cuppa. A thank you to Caroline and Mark Sayers for their work collating and computing the DAG figures to help us with grant applications.
When I joined DAG all those years ago, the funding landscape was different to what it is now with money being ok and little by little bits of funding had been cut and cut, we are more and more reliant on finding funds and donations and I am grateful to the lottery for their funding.
30 is my next number and that is how long the National Lottery has been going, We met with the Lottery rep from our area and she said they have less money and more and more people applying so can be very tough to get funding and I am confident we will be able to get continuation funding or new funding in 2025.
A lot of customers at DAG have various needs and we had a lady who needed help from DAG to ring PIP line, this lady couldn’t contact pip due to her needs, the main stumbling block was pip helpline being inaccessible to her because of her disability, this is one of the many reasons DAG needs to be around in order to help and support the people who without DAG would fall through the gaps.
Me and Tim took part in a podcast and we were talking about DAG and the topic of the wider community came up and the interview was amazed at how many people we help and where from and we mentioned we help people from Hull, York, Leeds and further afield
It is important to keep DAG going as people who travel for long distances to see an advisor who can’t see a one in their area due to cuts and who have to travel, it is a vital services for people who need support who shouldn’t get it and we need to be around for those people whom would again fall thought the gaps.

## Manager’s Report
This year has seen a change of government as well as threats of radical change to the disability benefit system by both outgoing and incoming governments.
What has not changed is the consistent and high demand from local disabled people and their families for the help of DAG with their applications for disability benefits and related key issues. Overwhelmingly, requests for support with Personal Independence Payment (PIP) dominate the group’s workload, although in recent weeks there has been a sudden rush of calls from those on income-related Employment and Support for help with their enforced “migration” to Universal Credit which has started to be implemented by DWP in earnest.
Increasingly claims for disability benefits, as well as for blue badges and bus passes, need to be made on-line. This has placed even greater pressure on individuals who may not be confident with the internet or may not even have internet access. The group, therefore, has had to ensure that its skills set is such that it can supply appropriate and timely support in these situations.
DAG has many years’ experience in delivering comprehensive welfare benefit assistance and vitally it ensures that the advice it provides is always of the minute and geared to maximising successful outcomes
. The group is user-led and its service is delivered by a team with lived experience of the key issues of disability, including direct knowledge of disability benefits and other services. DAG uses its specialist knowledge, experience and understanding to reach out to sectors of the local community who may experience difficulties accessing relevant entitlements, including welfare benefits, because of disability, as well as because of cultural or ethnic alienation in addition to being disabled
. Our support always seeks to ensure a much smoother, better informed and ultimately successful passage through the benefit system for our service users, as well as to provide an increased awareness of and access to other services for disabled people. Furthermore, through its popular Treats project, the group offers the opportunity for many local disabled people to overcome social isolation and pursue personal development by participating in a variety of leisure activities in a friendly and supportive environment.
In this way, DAG continues to occupy a unique and vital role in the local community at a time when disabled people throughout the nation feel increasingly dislocated from avenues to social inclusion. The group is widely perceived as a local champion of disability and is indeed unshaken its expressed aim of seeking to empower the disabled people by the provision of services that are geared to helping this sector of the community achieve social justice and parity.
I would like to close by offering a big thank you to our staff and volunteers who continue to show such skill, dedication and empathy by providing vital help and support to all those who seek DAG’s support.

## Treats Report
2024 has seen a number of changes in the way DAG has provided leisure activities but its appeal and popularity continue to reward members.
We have embarked on new projects through co-operation with groups which have presented activities to our membership at the street. This approach has proven to be worthwhile and has challenged and engaged new members to the Treats project.
Cost consideration is still a concern but funding arrangements have eased this matter. We received significant support from individual donations, £847.00, and grants accumulated over the year from totaling £2,500 from Sport England, Tesco, Woodsmith Foundation, 2 Ridings, Awards For All, Masons, thanks for your help. Majority of Treats funding was carried forwarded from the 2022-2023 financial year.
Our Art and Craft group has built good working relationship with local Arts providers and developed options with contact having been made with Rural Arts. Our group has arranged trips to the theatre and has made visits to local attractions and Singing sessions are still as popular.
Our activities have proven to be of great appeal and the scheme is well managed by the membership.

## Plans for the Future
## A year of Strength
2023-2024 will be a year of strengthening for DAG. We will be having a development day and recruiting new board members we now need to ensure we keep true to our core values and overall mission, with all our policies and practices aligned with our ongoing aim to deliver a high-quality service. We want to make sure that we stay relevant and make DAG better by acting on feedback we are given.
We will be working on our long-term sustainability and look at efficient ways we can use the DAG office to offer a better experience.
## Focus on fund-raising
We shall be looking to develop a fund-raising strategy and establish a fund-raising committee which will be responsible to the board of trustees for leading on this task.
## New Members
We aim to attract more DAG members and try and get more from members by creating a membership coordinator and more effective use of members and their skills
We also aim to recruit new a range of diverse board members and conduct refresh training of trustees and also conduct a skills audit to see what we need to be a efficient board.

## **Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees of Scarborough & District Disablement Action Group, Charity Number 703172**
I report on the accounts of the Charity for the year ended 31 March 2024, which are set out on pages 2 to 9.
## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner**
The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity's trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 ("the Charities Act") and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to:
examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act
follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioner under section 145(5)(b) of the Charities Act; and
state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
## **Basis of independent examiner's report**
My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioner. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and, consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts show a "true and fair view" and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
## **Independent examiner's report**
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention;
which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect, the requirements: a) to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; and b) to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and to comply with the accounting requirements of the Charities Act have not been met; or
to which in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
