CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING – 26[th] OCTOBER 2022
Good evening everyone. Welcome to the AGM which will be my last as Chairman as I step down after three years in the role.
At this time last year we had just managed to reopen the theatre with “Separate Tables” after the 18 months of lockdown and were looking forward to a full season of plays again. We finally managed to get Peter Smith’s production of “Be My Baby” in front of an audience after it had become the first victim of Covid back in March 2020. We followed up with the hilarious “Bouncers”, directed by Carolanne Connolly and then the more thoughtful “My Mother Said I Never Should”, which marked Dawn Rowe’s directorial debut with the Players. The season finished with a truncated run of Ben Ventress’s excellent “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” which was hit by late cast withdrawals and a Covid outbreak amongst the cast late in the rehearsal process but, in the best traditions of theatre, “The Show Did Go On” and was a great success to round off the season. This season we started with Mark Storton’s production of “The Kitchen Sink” by Tom Wells, which was very well received, and now we are in rehearsal for Peter Smith’s production of “The Conscience of Sergeant Cluff” by Leslie Sands.
Off stage we have continued to work hard to maintain and improve the fabric of the theatre with the new curtains and drop down screen in
operation, the Coffee Lounge and the Bar refurbished and the new illuminated notice boards in place outside the theatre. Hopefully, the lights will be fully functioning in the not too distant future. Thanks must go to all those who have given freely of their time to make these improvements a reality.
I won’t pretend it has all been plain sailing as certain issues such as the nature of the programme and the decision to charge for it have continued to be a bone of contention. The matter was reviewed at a recent Executive Committee in August and the decision taken to continue with the new format and to charge for the programme so I would like to hope that we can now draw a line under the matter. We also need to find a new Bar Manager otherwise we will find ourselves in the situation where we are unable to open the bar during productions.
When I look back on the three years in which I have been Chairman I reflect on what has been a stressful period with the Covid Lockdown taking centre stage and making the major impact on the Players. On the plus side we have decorated the theatre, had new carpet laid in the auditorium, installed new stage curtains, refurbished the Bar and the Coffee Lounge, installed new notice boards and, oh yes, put on a number of successful productions. We are financially secure thanks in no small part to the bequest which helped us to finance these improvements. On the downside I am now permanently on two types of medication which I wasn’t when I took on the role of Chair.
My thanks must go to the members of the Executive Committee for their continuing hard work, to my Deputy Chair and Treasurer, Kathryn Smith,
who has worked tirelessly in both roles and has been there as someone to turn to for support and advice. Thanks are also in order for the role played by the ever efficient Secretary, Kathryn Lewis. Peter Smith is also standing down from the Executive Committee and I would like to thank him for his years of service in that position. I would also want to extend my appreciation for the contribution of Ben Ventress who, in his role as Chair of the Production Committee, has led the artistic side of the Players with great dedication and for his work in respect of Publicity. I cannot close without thanking all those of you who work behind the scenes to bring our productions to such a professional standard, the set builders, the costume department, the rehearsal prompts, the Producers, the Techies, the Bar staff and the Front of House team without whom it would not be possible to make the Rossendale Players the success that it is. Oh, and I mustn’t forget the highly artistic actors and directors who translate it all into the magic of theatre!
Thank you for allowing me to be your Chairman for the past three years. The time has come for me to stand down and allow my successor the opportunity to take the Players forward with renewed vigour and vision.
