Achievements and Performance

SORP reference
Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
Para 1.20 The charity continues to uphold the
principles of the Third Age Trust i.e. the
advancement, education, health and well-
being of people no longer in full time
employment.
Sheffield u3a (Su3a) achieves its aims by
supporting and encouraging members to
form Interest or Activity groups usually on a
peer-to-peer learning basis and also by
facilitating events which are open to all
members.
In 2025 our membership prior to renewal
date (1stOctober) reached 3100. This
represent an increase of slightly over 3%
which the trustees feel is a steady and
sustainable increase in line with our aims.
Social media has helped in bringing our
organisation to a wider local audience and
this year we also took the decision to use
group activities to promote membership.
This was because of a highly successful
public exhibition of their work organised by
one of our Art Groups and funded by
Sheffield u3a. It was very popular and
resulted in attracting new members both for
the group and Sheffield u3a and gave
“added value” to both prospective and
existing members.
We involved ourselves locally in the Silver
Sunday initiative organised by Age UK and
also in a local Music Festival arranged by
one of our members.
The staging of these member-driven events
involved our wider membership and reduced
the burden which would otherwise have
fallen on a small number of volunteers.
Our Group Coordinator’s team has been
heavily involved in establishing new groups
based on feedback from the members.
Older activity/interest groups have come to a
natural end but newer groups have replaced
them.
Weheld twomeetingsfor new members

during the year where we aim to inform them of how the organisation works and what to expect from their membership. In return they help guide us to the sort of activities we should be seeking to establish. However, it is made clear that we are a facilitating organisation rather than a service provider and that activities will not happen unless members step up to organise them. We also held a meeting for all group coordinators which was well attended and gave the trustees the opportunity to alert members to changes within the organisation and to consult them on future plans. Our relationship with both local universities but in particular Sheffield University, whereby our members help in their research projects has been affected by the funding issues they are experiencing. However, we hope to maintain the relationships with both universities in the future. The trustees have also established a subgroup to look at diversity and inclusion within our organisation and to consult with members who may be affected, as a result of disability, ethnicity or any other of the other protected characteristics in the Equality Act 2010. In summary Sheffield u3a continues to be a solid, well-run organisation with wellconsidered aims and policies.
