Amended at the AGMs in 1989, 1991, 1997, 2012, 2013, and 2014 ## **Trustees/Management Committee** The Trustees/Management Committee met four times during the year. ## **Objectives and Activities for the Public Benefit** The objects of the Landscape Trust are: To work for the public benefit of both residents and visitors within the Arnside/Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty by stimulating and encouraging both understanding of and active involvement in the protection, conservation and practical improvement of features of general public amenity or historical interest within the landscape. ## **Payments to Trustees** There were no payments to Trustees apart from authorised expenses and re-imbursements for expenditure made on behalf of the Trust. ## **Serious Incidents** No serious incidents occurred during the year. 2 Arnside and Silverdale AONB Landscape Trust **Treasurer’s Report.** This report covers the two financial years 2019/2020, and 2020/2021 and highlights the major financial events over each period, rather than a description of the set-up of the Trust finances which has been the pattern previously. ## 2019/2020 The main movement of funds related to repayment of the loans from various benefactors for the purchase of Coldwell Bank. Although an Appeal Fund had been set up it was necessary to use the Trust financial Reserves to effect clearance of the indebtedness. We are grateful to those who donated to the Appeal which forms the basis of the Coldwell Project bank account. An amount was received under the Rural Payments Agency Higher Level Scheme which began in November 2003. This is accounted for in the section for Reserves in the accounts. The Trust continued collaboration with the AONB Partnership Grant Fund which paid out £3,227 in assistance to Brian Smith, Julia Siers and the Westmoreland Red Squirrel Society. This was the first year the Trust produced a calendar which was a great success. It was also the beginning of the ‘Trust shop’ and my thanks go to Steve Benner for setting it up on the computer, and Lisa Whistlecroft who has overseen the administration of the sales. ## 2020/2021 This was the year the increase in membership subscriptions increased, the first for 30 years. The accounts show the difference this has made which has ensured the continued viability of the Trust despite the increase in costs. The Direct Debit scheme was implemented and has been a great success. We are grateful to everyone who has agreed to use this system and would ask those who have not participated to consider doing so. It helps the Trust a great deal in administrative costs and ensures the correct amount of subs is paid each year. The Trust was grateful to receive a legacy from the estate of the late Edmund F Wright of £79,500. This was split between the Trusts account with Cumberland Building Society, £60,000, which is our back-up fund and is set aside for future capital expenditure, and £19,000 paid into the Coldwell Project account as the financial Reserve for expenditure on the Reserves in future. We now have sufficient funds to meet the needs of looking after our Reserves for at least 10 years. Only one grant of £2,500 was paid out by the Partnership Grant Fund and that was to the Arnside Sailing Club. It therefore left an end of year balance in a Designated account of £8,298. Obviously during the year there was very little income or membership increase due to the lack of events. The Shop continues to be a vital source of income with the purchase of new items, such as tick cards, and the second year of the Trust calendar. It would be remiss of me not to express the Trust’s gratitude to Gill Rimington for allowing the Trust to sell the surplus stock of books written by the late Peter Standing with the proceeds going to Trust funds, as well as allowing us to take over the reprinting of Geotrails. I would like to acknowledge the help and guidance of Peter Bates who was the Trust’s Independent Examiner for eight years who died in 2020. I am pleased to say that Caroline Milne has taken on this role as from the 2020/2021 year. Arnside and Silverdale AONB Landscape Trust ## Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Landscape Trust ## Chairmans Annual Report 2020-2021 My report is quite brief – despite it covering the last two years The Trust did not hold an Annual General Meeting in July 2020 because of the National Pandemic situation. The Management Committee had hoped to hold it later last year, but again the situation was such that it could not happen. It was concluded that the AGM for 2019 should be suspended and merged with the subsequent one. Accordingly this report covers two fairly quiet years. The Trusts work has continued as well as possible and we have continued to communicate with the membership by electronic means. This seems to have worked well. For a long time it was not possible to meet as groups – even small ones, so some volunteers continued to work outdoors individually, then as groups of individuals (keeping quite separate) until they were allowed to meet outdoors. During the whole time the Trust has monitored the national situation and strictly abided by the prevailing regulations. We continue to take sensible precautions where appropriate. During the lockdowns we took the decision to post Keer to Kent rather than the usual hand deliveries. We have now resumed deliveries, but with appropriate precautions. The Trust has maintained a presence on line, thanks to sterling work by members and Trustees. For example, individuals have taken pictures on their walks around the area and we have been able to enjoy those sights by proxy. We now have an on-line shop which is being used regularly. The Management Committee continued to meet regularly via Zoom and much of the business continued as ever – with us all embracing the learning curve of interfacing with the information technology on a more regular basis than we had been used to. We are in the process of revisiting, and if necessary revising, the Trusts Constitution and putting together a portfolio of Policies and Procedures. As each stage is reached they will be on our website and we welcome comments. Once they are adopted they will be available to all via the same medium. Some of the Policies are presented today for the membership to ratify and adopt. Our Reserves are all in good heart and have been visited regularly by members and non-members. We report regularly in Keer to Kent on the work taking place and the regular volunteer team continue to do sterling work. We hope that we will be able to use the Reserves more as time goes on. It was wonderful in the early stages of the pandemic to note what a difference the absence of noise had made to the wildlife – even in our own gardens. I know of some researchers who have taken the opportunity to measure things such as wildflowers, grasses and lichens to see how they have been affected by lower pollution levels - from planes or from traffic perhaps - or from lower or greater footfall. I await publication of some of their results with interest. There has also been an increased interest in the environment when people were confined to their locality and were walking it regularly. People saw the verges, plants and trees etc. in some detail instead of just driving past. I hope this continues. Everyone working in the Trust has done a great job. You will be hearing from the treasurer about our finances – which appear quite healthy, We have continued to liaise with colleagues and partners – again mainly on line – and attended virtual meetings and events. We continue to look for volunteers to help us in all sorts of ways, but there is lots of room for more. As we are able to do more events we will need volunteers for that – for both indoor and outdoor tasks. We also need more people willing to be Trustees. As I speak here I am really preaching to the converted but if you know anyone who may be interested (or any arms you can gently twist) we would be delighted to hear of them As the lockdown eases further and we can meet again there is plenty for us to discuss and debate about the future I want to record my thanks to everyone – who kept calm and carried on, - and kept the show on the road, despite for some periods, not being allowed beyond our own four walls.
