ANNUAL REPORT 2020

The Annual General Meeting, scheduled for March 2020, was cancelled, as due to covid restrictions, it could not be held live & many of our members do not have the facility to attend online. The accounts were inspected as normal & presented to the committee at the first meeting following reopening. This is a summary of the Association’s activity during 2020.

In January, we welcomed our caretaker back after maternity leave. We realise her hours will need to be more flexible, & work with her to help with this.

Our activities progressed as normal until lockdown at the end of March. We organised 2 coffee mornings, both enjoyed by all. The February half term lunch and activity club for families qualifying for free school meals also went ahead & was much appreciated.

Following government restrictions on numbers of people allowed to meet, all activities at the Centre stopped on 18[th] March & the caretaker was furloughed a week later. Nobody entered the building for over three months, apart from a daily check, by one committee member, for any damage, to comply with our insurance.

The chiropodist was able to resume his monthly visits in July, observing covid restrictions. It was obvious that the holiday lunch club for families qualifying for free school meals would not take place during the summer holidays as usual. Funding was instead obtained to provide a pack containing some activities and food items to these families, and numbers obtained by liaising with the 3 local primary schools. A small group of volunteers, working in line with restrictions, made up the packs. Our thanks are due to the Community Police, who delivered the packs to the schools for distribution quickly since the food, though mostly non-perishable, included some fresh fruit. Feedback was extremely positive. This was repeated, on a smaller scale, at Autumn Half Term and Christmas.

In August, following some relaxation in restrictions, our art groups and the Ladies’ Club resumed, with social distancing. Committee meetings also resumed, in the hall rather than the committee room to allow for correct spacing. The toddlers and carers resumed at the start of the school term in September. Prior to lockdown, numbers were falling, but carers were so keen to be able to take the children to meet others, that we had to turn some away. It was therefore very sad that with numbers of infections rising, restrictions were reimposed and the group closed again after one session. The Ladies’ Club also closed again. Art classes continued until early November, when further tightening of restrictions forced them to close.

We have been extremely fortunate in that our utility suppliers only charged us for the standing charge part of the bill during lockdown, but particularly in the support from Durham County Council through the business rates support scheme and Stanley Town Council Covid support grant.

Much hard work will be needed to rebuild following the enforced closure.
