THE LEEDS COMMUNITY TRUST WHO WE ARE

THE TRUSTEES

Mrs Teresa Felton MBE Mr John Crawley Mr Nicholas Felton Mr Matthew Dibb Mr Benjamin Higo

The Leeds Community Trust (the Trust) was founded in 1985 as an independent charity shop in the Meanwood area of Leeds, apportioning profits to local charities. The impetus for helping individual families started with the needs making themselves known and a desire to help with the proceeds of the shop. The first case where the Trust was able to help was with a young woman who had advanced cancer. She lived in a high rise block of flats and she felt very isolated and vulnerable. The Trust paid to install a telephone. The Trust was granted charitable status by the Charity Commission on 29 March 1989.

In 1992 the Trust opened a second shop next door to the original shop to extend the range of items sold. Both the shops provide a wide range of goods at extremely reasonable prices for the large and loyal customer base built up over the years.

The money raised for the Trust comes from the profits made in the two shops and various fundraising events together with donations from individuals, businesses and other charitable bodies. That money is then used for the relief of poverty and the assistance of vulnerable people in Leeds. These may be individuals or families suffering from welfare or health problems, victims of abuse or crime, or suffering from mental health issues, learning difficulties, disabilities or special needs. The Trust works with social services and other caring agencies to identify, and then support, those who need assistance. This may be in the form of new beds, bedding, furniture, kitchen appliances, carpets or other items which will improve quality of life for those most in need.

In addition to this core area of work, the Trust raises money for its Christmas Fund which helps disadvantaged children with gifts, clothing, or special Christmas food. We help families from all religious and cultural backgrounds. The Trust also runs an Holiday Grants scheme to enable families with children to get a holiday.

Many families fall into more than one category

The circumstances of the families who we help can be very complex. The Trustees do look at situations compassionately, without prejudice, and assess the effect of our donation on the overall situation. The Trustees pay careful attention to the number people who will benefit from the assistance, particularly the children.

LETTER FROM SOCIAL WORKER

"I feel your service is really valuable. Mum was very thankful and the dryer will make a huge difference. "

"The new mattress will solve huge problem for the service user as he couldn't rest bacause of his operation and it will have a positive impact on his sleep and rest. This donation is very much

SOME CASE HISTORIES OF FAMILIES WE HELPED oo™™™™™™™ShSO§ Oo

Mum is a single parent with 2 children aged 1 and 5 months. Mum’s eldest daughter has died tragically and there is an ongoing police investigation with this. The circumstances are very tragic and continue to be difficult for mum. We helped with a washer and some kitchen equipment.

P. is a gentleman who had a stroke which has left him with emotional and cognitive difficulties together with fatigue, memory and concentration problems, anxiety and low mood. We helped with a washing machine.

Mum is a single parent of 4 young children who has struggled her mental health for many years. She is awaiting an assessment for ADHD. Mum receives no emotional or financial support off the children’s father. Mum’s previous partner was verbally and emotionally abusive. Mum also suffered childhood abuse and neglect from her own mum. She is struggling to manage her finances and we got her a fridge/freezer.

Social worker has asked for support for her client. Her client suffered from brain cancer in 2019 an things were very difficult for her during lockdown. She was admitted to hospital in 2022 following an intentional overdose. Her neighbour who had been helping her was taking large amounts of money from her which contributed to her mental health decline. She has now moved to a new property and we bought a fridge/freezer.

Mum & dad have one child aged 2 who receives intensive support due to her having complex medical and learning needs. She has been referred for neuro disability assessment and paediatric intervention due to her global delay. We been asked to help with safety equipment as the home environment is unsafe. We helped with safety equipment.

An elderly man – F, aged 84 is being cared for by a friend T. She is a full time carer of F. As he is incontinent and blankets/clothes need to be washed and the washer is only washing intermittently. We got them a new one.

A lady S. is 51 yrs old and lives alone in a ground floor council flat. S is a victim of harassment by a family member and of unwanted attention from an upstairs neighbour. He bangs on her windows & shouts to her & tries to manipulate her into buying items for him. She has reported him to the police but due to lack of evidence they are unable to take it further. We have paid for some blinds to be fitted giving her more privacy.

A single dad to an 8 year old boy who has autism, learning difficulties and several physical disabilities. He can only attend school on a part-time basis so dad can only work part-time. He is ex Special Forces and is suffering from PTSD for which he is seeking support from a Veterans charity. We bought him a mattress so he can get a better night’s sleep.

M. a young woman lives with her partner. She suffers from learning disabilities & multiple disadvantages ie mental health, depression. Her partner also has learning difficulties and they have been victim of ASB harassment due to their vulnerability. They were placed in emergency accommodation after bricks were thrown through their window and her partner was injured and admitted to hospital. They are now in a secure home and we supplied a fridge/freezer.

These examples are typical of most of our requests Some details are withheld to ensure the anonymity of the family

WHAT THE FAMILIES SAY ABOUT US….

“Extremely beneficial to the family and really helpful staff. The family are now able to get a cooker and start rebuilding their life. Thank you.”

“The grant has allowed the family to purchase a new washing machine which has made a massive impact on mum as she was taking clothing to friends to be washed. The money is really appreciated and mum and dad can’t thank you enough. Amazing charity :)) ”

“Thank you so much. This money has just made my Christmas.”

“Thank you so much it has been such a hard year.”

“Really, really appreciate it. It really helps. Thanks.”

“Very touched – will make a big difference. Lovely to know people are so kind. Made their day.”

“Mum was overwhelmed by the support and enabled her to move back into the family home & have basic kitchen utensils/equipment for her children & herself as well as some storage for clothes & the new bedding. It boosted mum’s emotional well-being which had a positive impact on the children. Many thanks.”

“We are so grateful for this gift for G. he will take time to look and find a washing machine is clear & easy to use due to his sight issues.

G. wanted me (social worker) to thank you too”.

“Thank you for the cheque for my client. We have unexpectantly been donated a washing machine so money now allocated to be spent on new carpets for mum. Thank you so much.”

“Mum was so thrilled to hear she could have a ‘new clean bed’ just for her & get off the sofa. She wanted me to thank you.”

“Hugely appreciated. Will make a tremendous difference for my client in increasing his independence & having a positive impact on his mental health.”

“This is such a kind gift for a lady who tries so hard to budget for her two growing girls. She said ‘Please thank them from me’ so I say thank you.”

“My client really appreciates this £200 which will be spent on carpeting and underlay. It will help to insulate her home and as she has mental & physical health difficulties it will improve that 7 reduce financial stress.”

“Thank you so much for providing the funding for this family. The family can now do a proper food shop rather than buying food daily. This will have a great financial impact upon the family.”

“The family’s mum just called & she was very emotional and shared that she wants to say a very big thank you to all at the Leeds Community Shop Trust for the washing machine. She has been working through a backlog of washing and is so relieved an happy to have a working washer. She is not sure what she would have done without your support.”
