Activities and future plans
Following on from Covid, we were fortunate to have money from the government which enabled us to take on the toilet refurbishment programme which has greatly improved facilities here. We used all the grants available from the government to fund this. That, along with returning regular bookings and a variety of new bookings has given us a good regular monthly income which covers all associated running costs and has enabled us to take on larger projects. These have included the replacement of all lighting with LED lights to ensure a more efficient and greener option, and the replacement of broken manholes in the car park and new line marking.
Going forward it is our intention to redecorate the main hall and replace some of the external doors along with replacement blinds to the main hall windows. This will ensure we can continue to make the hall a more attractive room for the hiring out to parties and weddings. This is an ongoing project.
Having lost a nursery following Covid, we have been fortunate to secure the hire of the facility to a nursery which was relocating from its previous premises. They have settled well into the community and engage with both the church and the local school. They work well with our regular hirers and provide a regular monthly income.
2
All of our regular hirers returned after Covid, and we secured new groups too. We are fortunate to have a wide selection of groups using the hall in the evenings – every night is booked with a different activity, including, bowls, art classes, dog training class, soccer for tots and juniors, exercise and martial arts classes along with sewing groups, mindfulness and relaxation groups. Providing a mix of activities for all ages and abilities in the village. Regular hirers include the local WI groups, the school and the church and we hold craft fairs. All of the above are well supported.
We are also indebted to the landlord of our local pub who took on the task of refurbishing the bar. This was another long overdue project. This improvement has raised the standard of service that we provide. Usage of the bar has increased as customer satisfaction is better than previously.
All the regular hirers and contributors make up our Community Centre family, with all parties working together. This is truly a community centre.
Private hires have been steadily increasing. We have hosted many children’s birthday parties, weddings, music events, psychic evenings, a bird show, craft fairs, and a letterbox study group to name a few. Several of these have re-booked for this year, all commenting on what a good venue we have and how clean it is. Future bookings are healthy. As trustees, we have held an Oktoberfest, which although poorly attended, covered its costs and a great night was had by all. We are hoping to hold another event this year if we have enough people to organise and support this.
Our monthly fish and chip lunch has been a huge success. With a regular group of 40 people partaking. We had a Christmas lunch attended by 90 people and a Coronation Afternoon tea for 60 people.
We could not run these lunches without the help of our volunteers who turn up tirelessly every month to run the event.
The parish council have been supportive in everything we do and is always on hand for advice on any matter we are unsure of.
Thomas Reynolds – Secretary December 2023
