STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT

The Gujarati Association (Wolverhampton) was formed in 1968, adopting its own constitution and was granted charitable status on the 8th December 1988.

Trustees are appointed by the membership at an Annual General Meeting (A.G.M) and carry out day-to-day running of the association. We have four ‘holding’ trustees who are elected on a five-year term, who shall be named and responsible for the trust property.

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

a) To promote the benefit of the residents of Wolverhampton particularly but not exclusively members of the Hindu Gujarati community by the advancement of education, the relief of poverty and sickness the reservation and protection of good health and the provision of facilities for recreation and other leisure-time occupation in the interests of social welfare and with the object of improving the condition of life of the Gujarati community,

b) to relieve beneficiaries who are in conditions of need by such means as thought fit including help and assistance for the aged.

c) to promote unity and racial harmony within the different communities in Wolverhampton by any charitable means that the trustees may from time to time think fit.

d) to advance the Hindu religion.

e) to establish a centre and to maintain and manage such a centre for activities promoted by the association in furtherance of the above objects.

ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE

The association has continued to organise a variety of activities engaging all its members (young and old). The Sahkar day centre (elderly club), meet once a week to socialise, keep active, prepare a meal and take part in various activities. This is proving very popular as the word gets around. The elderly often feel isolated in their homes and so getting out and meeting fellow members is a perfect way to break up their week.

Popular activities such as the weekly yoga and aerobic classes, continue to flourish. Certainly the yoga class have about fifty people who attend on a weekly basis. This is open to all nationalities, religious beliefs and gender. It is nice to see other communities attending and using our facilities.

We are providing a Tiffin service twice a week for the elderly within the community which is subsidised by the Association. Our Youth Club continues to run on a weekly basis.

Promotion of all the events that take place within the organisation (Religious and general) are advertised/communicated via our Gujarati Association Facebook page, e-mail and newsletters which are available to the community.

Our premises continues to be a sought after venue hired by different communities to celebrate their special occasions i.e. weddings, birthday parties and community festivals.

FINANCIAL REVIEW

The results for the year, and the financial position at the end of the year, are shown in the

attached financial statements.

PLANS FOR FUTURE PERIODS

The association is currently in the process of extending the premises to enable storage provision and renovation of our existing prayer room.

Signed on behalf of the trustees
