Trustees' Annual Report

From: 1st April 2021 To: 31st March 2022

Charity's full name Friends of St Bede's

Registered Charity number 700312

Objectives and activities

Summary of the purposes of the charity set out in its governing document

The Friends of St Bede's aim to promote any charitable purpose which advances the religious and other charitable work carried on by the Congregation of Jesus community and Pastoral Centre established at Blossom Street in the city of York.

Summary of the main activities in relation to those purposes for the public benefit, in particular, the activities, projects or services identified in the accounts

We use subscriptions, donations and bequests from our members (and from other visitors to St Bede's Patoral Centre) to support the pastoral work carried on St Bede's. Funds have recently been used to provide items which make life easier for the staff, such as a rechargeable cordless vacuum cleaner, new office chairs and footrests.

The trustees consider that they have complied with their duties to have due regard to the public benefit guidance published by the Charity Commission.

Achievements and performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity, identifying the difference the charity’s work has made to the circumstances of its beneficiaries and any wider benefits to society as a whole.

The Friends of St Bede's has achieved its main aim of supporting the work of St Bede's Pastoral Centre both financially and in person by our members. This has enabled St Bede's to continue offering a safe and welcoming space for the many groups and individuals who come to the Centre. Our Committee meets with the Director several times each year to keep updated about all the various ongoing and proposed activities and to offer suggestions and encouragment.

Financial review

Review of the charity’s financial position at the end of the period

2021-22 has been an exceptional year as we have received two bequests: one of £5,000 and one of £74,047.03 making a total of £79,047.03. (By contrast, in 2020-2021, our total receipts were just over £1,000 from subscriptions and donations.) Our total balance at the end of March 2021 was £85,908.39. We would normally have about £5,000 in reserve.

Statement explaining the policy for holding reserves stating why they are held

It is not our intention to hold such large amounts in reserve and we are currently discussing with the Director how our funds can best be used to support the work of St Bede's. We have already committed to contributing to work planned to improve the garden and also to creating a craft area in the basement. We are open to disbursing the funds in the most effective way as soon as possible.

Amount of reserves held £85,908 of unrestricted reserve
