HUDDERSFIELD MUSIC SOCIETY

ANNUAL REPORT AND ACCOUNTS 2021-2022

Registered Charity 529340

A Message from the President

Inevitably, the Pandemic presented many challenges for the last two concerts of the 102[nd] Season and the whole of the 103[rd] Season. However, I am very pleased to report that with sterling work from our esteemed Secretary, David Allsopp, and huge co-operation from our artists, who were desperate to be given any chance to perform and play, we have once again been able to demonstrate the excellent standard of chamber music for which Huddersfield Music Society is renowned.

I take this opportunity to thank Huddersfield Parish Church for stepping in as an alternative and welcoming venue. With some skilful amendments of dates, the four concerts that required a piano took place in March and April when we were finally able to return to St. Paul’s Hall. We were privileged to hear some music-making of the highest order in these concerts and many of you have requested that these artists be re-engaged as soon as possible.

Through all the difficulties, you, our subscribers, have been unstinting in your support for which we warmly thank you. If you look at our accounts, you will see that the special appeal for donations raised over £13,000 which is nothing short of magnificent and shows how important and valuable the Society is to so many of you. If you find yourself in position to make a further donation, please speak to me or our Treasurer, Christine Stead. Be assured that your money will be used wisely and well and will ensure that the Society can continue with confidence in the years to come.

Finally, our new Season (104[th] ) starts on Monday, 10[th] October, with a recital by the superb Gould Piano Trio. The following week (17[th] October) our AGM will be held at the Parish Church. I look forward to seeing you at both events. Let us hope that the difficult times that we have all experienced are now behind us and our wonderful Society continues to flourish.

The society’s objectives are to advance, improve, and maintain public education in, and the appreciation of, the art and science of music in all its aspects by any means the committee think fit including through the presentation of public concerts and recitals by professional artists and ensembles, and to further such charitable purpose or purposes as the committee think fit including through the making of grants and donations.

It is the intention of the committee to continue to promote a concert series of seven concerts in each year with the support of the University of Huddersfield for which we are most grateful, and to which the society is affiliated.

Concerts rescheduled from the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons

The final two concerts of the 2019-20 season which were cancelled at the start of the pandemic took place in September and October 2021 and a full seven concerts, consisting of those which were scheduled for the 2020-21 season, took place from November 2021 to April 2022.

Financial Review

Our accounts for the year show an overall surplus of £9 481,28. This was made possible by very generous donations from our subscribers and supporters, for which we are very grateful.

P olicy on Reserves and Investment Policy

The policy of the society is to maintain reserves sufficient to meet its liabilities in the forthcoming season and to promote the enjoyment of recital concerts. The society maintains deposits of monies available on demand and short-term notice.

Committee Members

The society is keen to recruit additional members to the board of trustees. A deep knowledge of classical chamber music is not a requirement but a liking and enthusiasm for it and a willingness to assist in the running of the society would be very welcome.

Signed on behalf of the trustees

David Allsopp, Secretary

INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S REPORT TO THE TRUSTEES OF THE HUDDERSFIELD MUSIC SOCIETY

I report on the financial statements of the Huddersfield Music Society for the year ended 30 April 2022 which are set out on the preceding pages.

Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner

The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the financial statements. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the Act). It is my responsibility to state, on the basis of the procedures specified under section 145(5)b of the Act, whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Basis of independent examiner’s statement

My examination was carried out in accordance with general directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the financial statements presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the financial statements and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the financial statements present a “true and fair view” and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

Independent examiner’s statement

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:

  1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect, the requirements:

  2. to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the Act; and

  3. to prepare financial statements which accord with the accounting records; and

  4. to comply with the accounting requirements of the Act have not been met; or

  5. to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the financial statements to be reached; or

  6. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the accounting rules of the Society have not been met.
