Summary

Halifax Philharmonic Club (HPC) has completed its 78[th] successful season of chamber music with performances by eight eminent ensembles. The Club is a registered charity with the principal aim of promoting the enjoyment of classical, chamber music through the provision of such recitals in West Yorkshire. In doing so the Club also aims to support the work of talented national and international ensembles in bringing their performances to a wider public.

Recitals were performed in the Square Chapel Arts Centre, Halifax. (Section 2).

The Club is managed by a board of trustees and committee members responsible for governance, programme development, administration and finance (See Section 1). The main sources of receipts are subscriptions and donations. Payments principally are for artists’ fees and venue costs. Reserves at the start of the financial year stood at £28,123. At the year ending this figure was £29,039. There was a surplus for the year of £916. (See Section 3 & Appendix 1 for full details). Accounts were independently prepared by Broadbents Accountants Ltd ., Halifax (See also Appendix 1).

The eight ensembles who performed ranged from string quartets, through trios and soloists. All performers

have significant national and international reputations, and the concert were uniformly appreciated by a very knowledgeable audience. (For full details of the recitals see Section 4.)

The trustees and committee members of Halifax Philharmonic Club are very aware that the cultural and social environment in which amateur music organisations perform is changing and that such developments must be responded to if they are to remain viable. To this end, careful planning is being untaken to broaden the involvement of an extended and more diverse audience (See Section 5.)

2 Venue

The concerts were held in The Square Chapel Arts Centre, Halifax, once a nonconformist chapel designed by Thomas Bradley and James Kershaw at the instigation of Titus Knight, a local preacher. Construction started in 1772 and the chapel was visited by John Wesley in July of that year. The venue provides excellent acoustics for the chamber music performed here under the Halifax Philharmonic Club auspices.

Sadly, however, the management of the Centre has changed its policy with respect to availability, and it was decided to find an alternative concert space. After much deliberation, the Crossley Gallery in the Dean Clough Centre, Halifax. was chosen for the 2023-2024 season.

3 Finance

The accounts for this season have been prepared by the auditors, Broadbent Accountant Ltd, Halifax. Appendix I presents the accounts.

The principal source of income for HPC are subscriptions (£130 for all seven concerts), and payment at the box office (Adults £24, Concession £22, Students £5 and children under 16 £2). In addition, HPC receives generous donations which are truly appreciated by the trustees and committee members. Expenditure is principally on artists’ fees and venue booking. A full statement of income and expenditure is presented in Appendix 1 which includes comparative income and expenditure for the preceding season (2021-2022).

Reserves at the start of the financial year were £28,123. At the year ending this figure stood at £29,039. The reserve is held on account to ensure necessary payments can be made prior to income generation through subscription, box office takings and donations.

Income from subscriptions, donations, box office and programme sales yielded £31,360. Expenditure which covered artists’ fees, venue hire, and miscellaneous running costs totalled £30,444, a surplus for the year of £916. Comparing the recent season with the preceding one, subscriptions showed an increase in revenue of £807. However, donations were lower by £1,117 though box office sales increased by £7,335.

7

The high box office take in 2022-2023 reflects well above average, sell out audiences for recitals by Miloš Karadaglić and the Kanneh-Masons Family. The latter musicians performed a free recital for subscribers as a post-Covid gesture of appreciation for their continued support.

Financially 2022-2023 was a successful year with the reserve balance increased by £916 at the end of year.

5 Looking to the future

Halifax Philharmonic Club’s 78[th] season was a considerable success. It was with sadness and concern that a change of venue for the next season had to be undertaken, with the Dean Clough Centre being selected after much consideration. This change, however, will be kept under review with respect to its acceptability as a chamber music venue, e.g. acoustic quality, and regarding accessibility for members of the audience.

The trustees and committee will also continue to keep under review the impact of the social and musical environment on the Club’s activities, with special reference to the demographics of the audience. It is our intention, however, to involve more members of the community across both the age and demographic range so a wider number of people may enjoy and contribute to our valuable work enhancing the cultural life of Calderdale and West Yorkshire.
