## **ACHIEVEMENTS**

## **Charitable Activities**

In 2012 the charity spent the capital it had raised by selling the schoolmaster’s house in or around 1986, plus a further donation, on buying and converting the Methodist schoolroom into a hall for the school, now called the Garton Hall. The charity was then dormant until it attracted a significant donation in 2024. About half of this has been spent this year chiefly on new playground equipment at the school.

## **Administration**

The charity has re-established its registration for Gift Aid and is administered directly by the trustees

## **HISTORY**

The charity was established by certain Indentures of Lease and Release dated on or about 12[th] and 13[th] August 1793 between John Garton and the Vicar of Long Clawson and others, to found a permanent school for the village. In 1090 Ivo de Ticheville gave the tithes of his newly built church at Clawson to his overlord’s new priory at Belvoir. At the Reformation the tithes were acquired by the Noels of Dalby, then sold to Henry Hastings, then they passed down the descendants of the three daughters of his banker Thomas Cotele. At the Enclosure of Clawson in 1780, John Garton and his brother Robert owned one third of the tithes, but by the time the Award was made, had acquired the other two thirds, which they commuted for land, ending up with 800 acres and two mansions. Robert died unmarried and John succeeded to it all. A school had been started in the chantry chapel, now the vestry of the church, expanding into the chancel, but the Archdeacon complained that there were inkblots on the altar and that the children were relieving themselves in the churchyard, whither they had also ejected the 13[th] century effigy of the Lord of the Manor. The new charity finally built the present school in 1840, extending it several times afterwards.
