Trustee Report

District Chair
As a team, we have been in the process of undergoing a lot of change during this year. We all know that we are in the midst of a transition period as an organisation and, this year, there has been quite the focus on changes to the Trustee Board, its role and purpose in the governance of our charity and its structure. As usual, our dedicated team of volunteers have risen to the occasion and supported me and the District Team in ensuring that Scouting has been able to operate with great success.
Before reflecting on the year as a charity, I would like to recognise the achievements of one of our team, Geoff Priestley. Geoff has been a member of Keighley Scouts for many years, serving as a Trustee and Deputy Chair within them. During the last year, Geoff was quite rightly recognised for his service in his award of the Silver Wolf. I would like to congratulate Geoff for this very welldeserved achievement!
We are continuing to develop, as you will hopefully see from our new constitution. We have more work to do in continuing to develop our systems and governance, ensuring that all of the background work continues to be seamlessly in place for the grassroots activity.
One key change, as you might have noticed from our AGM this year, is to how we recruit and appoint trustees. There is not longer an election process, rather an open and wide-reaching selection process. In order to ensure that term limits work effectively and suit our needs as a body, we have set up the team to ensure that our systems reflect our best practice. This open selection criteria will begin with key roles in the team to ensure that the council can continue to be confident in our governance of the district.
Another key change is to our personel. The role of Secretary within our Trustee Board will no longer exist. After many years of service, Joan will continue in her role as a Trustee, continuing to offer her voice in our discussions and decisions. She will also continue in her role as District Administrator, meaning that she will still be very much a part of the behind-the-scenes work of the District – she isn’t going anywhere, just a change of name.
You may also have noted from our constitution that we have had to reduce our Trustee Board numbers. I would like to make special a very special ‘thank you’ to Geoff Priestley, Keith Hammerton, Elaine Olsson, Alan Whitaker, Josh Haggo and Paul Bastow. Their contributions to the Executive Team and Trustee Board, some for many years, have been invaluable and I am

extremely grateful to have had them as part of my team.
As always, we continue to search for youth voices. We have not met our constitutional target of “youth members” on our trustee board this year. This will form part of the recruitment process for the next year so, if you know anyone who is interested, please flag this up and ask them to keep their eyes open for more information. They are also welcome to get in touch with us so that we can send key information to them directly when the time comes.
It remains for me only to pass on three ‘thankyous’ at this stage. Firstly, a huge thank you to all of our Trustees who will continue to serve the District, diligently working in the background. Secondly, a huge thank you to Jeanette and her team who we work with to ensure that Keighley Scouts is the best that it can be. Thirdly, a huge thank you to the entire Scout Council – all of you! It always brightens our meetings to hear about the wonderful things that are going on around the District for our young people!
Finally, on more thank you to all of the incredible ‘back office’ volunteers. The secretaries, treasurers and chairs; the trustee board members; the parents who help with fundraising and every volunteer who hasn’t yet been mentioned. Thank you for your time, your energy and your service!

Scout District Report
Jeanette Young District Lead Volunteer (District Commissioner)
Once again, a time for reflection:
Scouting in Keighley offers many diverse activities and events to our members. We challenge and encourage our young people in any way possible enabling our them to feel the thrill and excitement of the moment. We offer a huge variety of activities, both indoors and outdoors, encompassing the individual and personalities of all our members and groups.
We are still growing in numbers, ever stronger, ever growing.
We are gaining more new leaders which is great news.
Our young leaders are growing in numbers.
New Squirrel groups are opening.
There are many changes on the way.
A new constitution, a new welcome to new members, a change of names, a new digital system.
All being embraced within our district slowly but surely.
We are still in the process of ensuring we welcome our new members correctly in an informal and friendly manner yet making sure they are aware of their commitment to scouting.
We are continuing to support groups with low numbers and advertising scouting to the public in every way possible. However, we must always remember retention is a vital part of our development.
When visiting sections on their group night or attending group AGM’s I am always amazed at the activities themes and ideas delivered by our leaders and how much time is spent on planning and organising weekly activities, camps, and outings. What more commitment can one ask for?
The excellent work within Keighley District reflects on the standard of scouting we display on every District event, on group night and when on view to the public. This can only happen with the

hard work and commitment of all the leaders and helpers within the district along with their families, without whom it would not be possible.
Also, our District team who plan, organise, and attend district events. They work so hard giving many hours to scouting many of those hours unseen, planning and organising and attending events and meetings all of which helps towards the success of our District.
Also, thanks to Catherine Carter for including the Beavers in all of the Squirrel activities in our absence of a Beaver ADC.
Also, our Chair and Trustee board who give their time along with all the trustee members in ensuring the success and governance of our District as their priority.
Also, our Service Network Team who are always there when asked to assist in any way they can.
If I can also thank the County Team, for all their support.
We had a jamboree team who flew out to South Korea (all funds raised by themselves) to find there were lots of issues surrounding the campsite, but they were well looked after and enjoyed their stay even though it turned out a little differently than expected.
We had a Canada team who had a wonderful time out in Canada skiing bob sleighing and many other activities again all fund raised by the young people.
Congratulations to Geoff Priestley who was presented with his Silver Wolf so well deserved.
An awards evening was held for our young members and their families which was a huge success. It is a great opportunity to show case the potential and achievement of our young people in scouting.
We celebrated Christingle once again last December and through the generosity of the Beavers and Cubs, I was able to take a car full of gifts to the Salvation Army to help fill Christmas hampers for those less fortunate.
St George’s day, celebration, brought us all together to renew our promise on a lovely sunny morning.
We live in a rapidly changing world, but young people still love and yearn for challenge, adventure, and excitement that we in scouting can offer,

I have said on many occasions, there is no other organisation that can offer what we offer as passionately as we do.
If I can once again thank you all from the heart for all you do in Scouting

Youth Shaped Report
Thomas Keighley & Josh Haggo
Youth Lead Volunteers (District Youth Commissioners)
The last year has been steady for us in the Youth role, with successes and disappointments along the way. We’ve been thrilled to see all the sections that have engaged with YouShape and how our Scout family has grown.
Our biggest Youth project this year has been the awards evenings/days to congratulate and recognise the hard work our young people have put in to earning their top awards. Our older sections awards evening was held in November and was very well attended including our special guest the Lord Lieutenant and members of our District council. The event was amazing, and we are really looking forward to next year’s. Our younger sections awards day has been moved to October and we are hoping for a good turnout there as well.
Our Youth Forum earlier in the year did not quite pan out how we had hoped. Due to various circumstances we have to cancel the event. We are keen to get this event back up and running and will be aiming to try and get one held in the autumn. We want to try and make it so that as a district resource we are providing the ability for our young people to engage with YouShape as regularly as possible and tick off as much of their award as possible. Watch this space.
Our Youth have a good year across the district and one of the major successes is the opening of our two new Squirrel Dreys at Oakworth and Silsden. The two new groups have quickly grown and our doing a fantastic job in bringing Scouting to our younger members. A massive thank you has to go out to our brilliant squirrel leaders who have made it all possible.
Lastly, a big shoutout to Rhiannon who has taken on the mantle of District lead for our Young Leaders. The work she has put into organising training and making sure our young leaders have everything they need to get the most out of their role has been fantastic. Well done Rhiannon!
Next year we are hoping for bigger and better and want to make sure that we are doing everything we can to make Scouting as brilliant as possible for our Youth.

Beaver Scout Section Report

We are currently operating without a Lead Volunteer for the Beaver Scout Section.
Particular thanks go to Cathering Carter for including the Beavers in Squirrel activities that were put on.

Cub Scout Section Report

Cubs Lead Volunteers (Assistant District Commissioners – Cub Scouts)
There have been lots of District events for the cubs to take part in, with many more events and activities later this year.
Events and activities held so far this year include the Water day, Fun Run, Bake Off, Christingle, Challenge Flag, Night Hike, and Master of Arms.
Thank you to everyone who gets involved and helps to make all the events so successful, a big thank you to you all. It has been fantastic to see so many cub packs taking part in District events this year. Keep sharing your Scouting adventures with us on the District Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
The Challenge Flag, in March, was held at Low Wood and was enjoyed by all. The activities included tent pitching, Archery, chariot building, 101 Uses for a necker, tallest tower, fire lighting, tomahawks, pyramid, knots and paper plane. The winning team was 6th Keighley Oakworth, second place 1st Keighley Fell Lane and in third place 2nd Keighley Riddlesden Fell. Well done to all the teams that took part.

Scout Section Report

Scouts Lead Volunteer (Assistant District Commissioner – Scouts)
Another good year of activities for the Scout Section. There have been several events with good participation from across the District, a summary of which is below:

June 23 – The Shuffle – a great turn out from across the District with many enthusiastic teams and even more enthusiastic leaders as hunters. The winners of the event were 1st Keighley (Fell Lane)

March 24 – Scout Challenge Flag at Low Wood – the event was won by 3rd Keighley (Steeton and Silsden) by a mere 0.5 points

April 24 – Camp Cooking Competition at Low Wood – the event was won by 3rd Keighley (Steeton and Silsden)

May 24 – Master at Arms Competition – a day of archery, axe throwing and air rifle shooting. The crack shot of the District this year was 3rd Keighley (Steeton and Silsden), It was great the event full to capacity with most Troops asking for more spaces if available.
We have more to come this year with a Soap Box Derby on 15th June and the Cobbydale Clomp – we are looking to push back the Clomp to September given the high numbers of activities and camps planned for the June and July period.
Next year, I would be keen to have a District Scout Camp to bring all the Scouts together for a weekend of fun and games with a chance to try a wide range of activities they may not get to do very often. If anyone has ideas for activities they would like to be run as a District event please let me know.
I would like to thank everyone who has helped putting together the activities and for taking part, including the District Team, Explorers, Leaders in each Troop and most importantly the Scouts who provide make these events fun and rewarding for us to run.

Explorer Scout Section Report

Explorers Lead Volunteer (District Explorer Scout Commissioner)
The Explorer Section is going well.
We had a great turn out for St Georges Day and Remembrance Sunday. Not so much with the Challenge Flag which Riddlesden retained.
Most units are now suffering from the loss of members to university with Airedale struggling with the numbers. They are also struggling a bit with leaders as the current ones have other Scouting commitments.
All units have enjoyed camps in various places. We continue to offer a wide and varied range of activities on our meeting nights. Doing Quizzes, Conkers, Human Hungry Hippos, Craft Evenings, Cultural nights, and many many more fun and educational-ish stuff.
We have helped out at Keighley Show, Malham Show Santa Run and the Fellsman Hike.
Culllingworth unit have entered into a Partnership agreement with their hosts.

Young Leaders Report
Rhiannon Conway
Young Leaders Lead Volunteer ( Assistant District Commissioner – YLs )
This past year has been very significant for the Young Leaders. We have seen a massive growth within the section and now have over 40 YLs across the District which is an amazing achievement.
Module A has been a priority this year to get everyone up to date with the mandatory training and we had our first multiple module training day in April. It has been amazing to see how enthusiastic our YL's are to make a difference within the groups and wanting to make a get involved.
As we progress into the next year, more Module dates will be released via OSM and emails will be sent to leaders to make everyone aware. Our next Module A will be the 15th June. If you do have any new YLs please share them on OSM directly to 'Keighley District Young Leader Unit' and for any guidance please email yl@keighleyscouts.org.uk.
A massive Well Done to all our Young Leaders who are currently putting in such a great effort across Keighley District!

Keighley Scout Service Network Report
This report incorporates the District Scout Network Unit and the District Scout Active Support Unit
Tim Powell Network and Scout Active Support Lead Volunteer (DSNC and SAS Manager)
January saw us start the New Year, with our AGM and team meeting being the only activities in the month
February was also quite month with the guides thinking day and our team meeting in the month
March Once again saw the team having a select few members assisting with the Cub night hike And of course our monthly team meeting.
April brought the annual St Georges Day Parade which the Team were now responsible for organising the parade element due to the requirement to complete road closure orders and the like. And yes you guessed it we also held our monthly meeting. Which was closely followed by our main Event the Fellsman and this time there no reports of and sun at cam.
May Was a very quiet month but we had a team meeting
June Is our busiest month with the team assisting with, The Bedale Festival, The Scout Shuffle of course we had a team meeting as well
July Saw the team involved in the Oakworth gala and the next day Oxenhope Straw Race and the next week we were involved in the. Cullingworth gala (Yes you guessed it our monthly team meeting) and it was the team’s Sixth birthday.
August , again this was a Quite month and we didn’t have a monthly meeting either
September Saw the team involved in yet another new event called Keighley Show to assist with the general marshalling on the event with the help of the explorers from Riddlesden (and yes, another monthly meeting)
October The team embarked on a working session at turtle rock on the 15th and cleared the undergrowth yet again and a team meeting taking place.

November The team held a working day at the village hall and the following day we again assisted the Town Council with the marshalling of the Remembrance Day parade. And yes, you have guessed it we had a team meeting
December saw the unit Help with the Christmas Lights switch on in Oakworth and we had a Curry night
I would like to thank all the members of the Activity Support Unit/KSSN and especially those who took on co-ordinating events. For the many and varied activities that we get involved with I hope you are all proud of your efforts over the last year and as the saying goes, I couldn’t have done it without all of your help A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL
