ANNUAL REPORT Scouts AND ACCOUNTS li 5th Risca +4p

GROUP SCOUT LEADER’S REPORT

Well, what a year it has been!

With the biggest challenge to Scouting since World War 2, I think we won’t forget the last 12 months any time soon. Despite the problems of the pandemic, I think it’s important to reflect on the good things and there are plenty of them from 5[th] Risca!

We have managed to renovate our hall with a new floor, new paint job, new kitchen facilities, new toilets and installed a fully featured AV system. On top of that, we have done some fantastic work outside as well with a new flagpole and sign installed, cleared all the rubbish and brambles from the site, rebuilt

our BBQ area, and moved our firepit to a more central and safer location whilst also giving it a fantastic makeover. Of course, I couldn’t mention our amazing artwork on what was once a drab green shipping container, it’s something everyone sees when they come to our hut and it reminds us of who we are and what we do.

I think the fact we have done this is not only fantastic but to have done it during a pandemic is nothing short of incredible and a lot of this hard work has been down to our Group Chair Becky Bennett-Wilding who has dedicated a great amount of personal time and effort to ensure these ideas come to fruition. Unfortunately, Becky will be standing down from our exec committee from this year’s AGM but her work will be utilised and appreciated by many for years if not decades to come, thanks to Becky from all at 5[th] Risca.

2020-21 also saw Terri Wiltshire leave us to pastures new in Dubai, thanks for all her hard work over the years. With that, we have recruited two new members to our team, Laura Hammond has joined us as our new Beaver leader (Cuckoo) and Sharon Anderson has joined her in Beavers as Assistant Leader (Red Robin) and they have done a fantastic job with our Beaver colony maintaining and even growing it with plenty of new members and provided a fantastically varied programme both online and face to face.

Cubs has also grown and is now our busiest section as I’m sure Sarah Powell (King Louie) will agree with. It’s because of this growth in the section we really need some more volunteers to ensure it can keep going from strength to strength, so whatever amount of time you can help with please get in touch!

With Scouts, we are really proud of how they have engaged with online sessions and face to face despite all the limitations we have had to have. We have had plenty of campfires which has been great for the Scouts to catch up with their friends whilst keeping warm in our outside sessions. They are being challenged to start to think for themselves and use their initiative when approaching tasks as it is a key part of their development during Scouting. It’s great to see them smiling and working hard in everything that’s thrown at them.

Whilst 2020 has been a rollercoaster of a year with plenty of ups and downs I am very proud of all our young people, leaders, and exec committee that it has been faced with a positive can-do attitude and I look forward to plenty of adventures, camps, and experiences for this next year.
