Chair’s Report – 2024
This year has been a challenging year for 5[th] Skipton. We started the year with a new leadership team, and a transition from an Executive Committee to a Board of Trustees. The Scout's Association has been introducing changes to their Policy, Organisation and Rules (POR), which has necessitated changes to the management structures, and processes within the group.
With the sudden resignation of the previous GSL and AGSL, I would like to thank the team at 5[th] for making the transition to the new leadership team as smooth and painless as possible. I would particularly like to thank Catherine and Carol, both of whom have stepped up to plan and run all three sections, helping to make sure that Scouting at 5[th] hasn’t stopped regardless of what’s happening in the background.
I would also like to thank Euan for managing The Dump. Thanks to his continued efforts we have a safe and secure building, which not only benefits us as a group, but also the wider Scouting movement in Skipton and various other groups in the local area.
I also want to recognise Gary who has stepped in to the GSL role. I know he thought his Scouting days were behind him, but I’m happy to have him and his wealth of Scouting knowledge on the leadership team.
Finally, I want to recognise the resilience shown by all the young people during this transitional period. A lot has changed over the last 12 months, and they have all shown themselves to be a credit to 5[th] Skipton.
The leadership team at 5[th] is now in a much better position. My thanks go to Kate Sorsby who has stepped in to take on the role as secretary, although with the recent resignation of our group Treasurer there is still a vacant position to fill. We have made great strides in making sure that the group is represented both with our attendance at events around town, and with the launch of our new website. We are making every attempt to ensure the group is in a strong financial position making sure that we have a safe place for Scouting in Skipton.
Looking to the future, we have big plans for The Dump, with plans for the continued improvements to downstairs. We also plan to attend Skipton Gala, to make sure that 5[th] is front and centre for all things Scouting in Skipton.
In conclusion the story this year has been one of rebuilding. We have rebuilt the leadership team. We have rebuilt the processes for the leadership team. We have rebuilt relationships and built new links. Next, we’re planning on rebuilding downstairs at The Dump.
Scouting is built on the time and dedication of volunteers, so my closing comment is to once again thank the team here at 5[th] Skipton for all that they do.
