## **5th Skipton Scout Group Report 2022**

Another unusual year for scouting at Fifth Skipton, we’ve got back to face to face scouting again, but have been subject to changing regulations for a lot of the year. Once again the team at 5[th] have done a remarkable job dealing with the challenges dealt to them, my thanks and appreciation to you all.

The day to day business of a modern scout group has continued. Leaders have planned and implemented a varied and interesting programme for the young people. The Executive committee, particularly Ruksana and Samm, have raised the funds that have allowed us to continue to both improve The Dump and deliver that programme.

There have been a number of improvements to The Dump this year. Most noticeably a new shutter linked to the fire alarm has been installed between the kitchen and the hall, and a new much more secure set of garage doors at the front of the building. In addition to this the building’s security has been further improved with new CCTV cameras. Thanks to Euan and Jon for their work in implementing these projects and the general maintenance work keeping the building in shape.

We have big ambitions for the coming year, more work to improve the group’s home, The Dump, and to augment our store of equipment so we can provide even more amazing experiences for our young members. Most pressing though is the need for a new roof, this will be a considerable expense and will likely tax Ruksana’s and Samm’s skills in fundraising to the limits. So I would appeal for anyone one with ideas or skills that they feel will help to come forward, we need all the help we can get.

Just as one side of the group is going so well we get the sad news that we are losing Assistant Scout Leader Ellen as she moves away from the area. We thank her for her hard work at the group and will miss her at Scout meetings. I’m sure everyone will join me in wishing her well for the future and hoping that she has enjoyed her time at 5[th] Skipton. If you ever come back within travelling distance then there is a warm welcome for you here.

In addition to this blow, our Scout Leader Euan is being forced by a work pressures to step back from his responsibilities of leading the Scout section to the role of Assistant leader. His contribution to the group recently has been immense and we thank him for his efforts. We wouldn’t be in such a good position without his managing the renovations and maintenance skills.

With this double blow to the Scout section, without some new volunteers, we are faced with the very real possibility that the Scout Section may have to close. So I would appeal to anyone who can help, or knows someone who wants to help, to come forward, enable us keep this brilliant section going. The young people, your young people, deserve the chance to continue their scouting career. You can help them to reach their potential, to have further adventures, to live their best lives. You will join a team of dedicated, friendly, and helpful people. You too will live your best life and discover skills you never knew you had. So what are you waiting for?

As Group Scout Leader I have had the pleasure of assisting to lead all sections from time to time and regularly with our Squirrel and Beaver sections. It is very rewarding to see the young people bond as a group, to learn new skills and interact in a way that they possibly aren’t able to within the school environment. They meet children from schools other than their own and I’d like to think that some form friendships that will last for life. It is a privilege to be a part of this period of someone’s life and in some small way help them to become the amazing people they are meant to be. Scouting is a good experience for young people and without your help fewer children will get to experience it.

One of our proudest achievements this past year has been the groups response to the difficult situation in Ukraine. Led by the young people in the Scout Section we held a short sponsored walk and coffee morning in support of the Save The Children fund for Ukraine. The group raised around £1600, which goes to show what our young people are capable of. All they need is support from you and your children can fulfil their potential.

I am proud to be a small part of this team. Proud to know ever single member, both young and not so young. I thank you all for your efforts, without you The Dump is just another building. Fifth Skipton has always been about the people and building friendships. I know you can all rise to the challenge of another year and surpass what you have already achieved.

So once again my thanks to you all.

Colin Hunter. Group Scout Leader.

## **5[th] Skipton Scouts Chair's Report 2022**

This has been another interesting year as we returned to a more open society but still had to deal with restrictions, ever changing regulations and guidance to deal with Covid. During this time the Leaders across all Sections have risen to the challenge.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Leaders, GSL and AGSL for all their hard work, time and commitment in programming meetings and activities for our young people.

As a Group we are in a strong and financially healthy position with a waiting list of young people wanting to join our Group, but we need more leaders across all our Sections. We are saying goodbye to our Assistant Scout Leader Ellen as she is moving away from the area, we wish her the best. Our Scout leader Euan is stepping down to Assistant Scout Leader due to work commitments and if we do not get more volunteers, we will have to close our Scout section. A huge thank you to Euan who alongside the role of Scout Leader has been managing our renovation programme.

During the year we have continued with our renovations to the building, installing the kitchen shutters and new garage doors.

Although we have a healthy balance sheet, we do need to replace the roof this year. The cost is approximately £30,000, our Treasurer has been working hard and applying for some grants to help towards the cost, but we still have a significant amount to raise. If anyone can help with fundraising, please get in touch.

Finally, I would like to reiterate the need for volunteers as Leaders and members of the Executive Committee to help the Group to continue to deliver the Scouting programme to our young people.

Ruksana Mahmood Chairperson 5[th] Skipton Scout Group

There is a delay in the payment of the 20/21 capitation however the sum of £3000 is covered. We have had no rental income. The renovations that are complete have been paid for. At the year end the balance in our account stands at £15,838.31. We have raised zero in fundraising this year. Thanks were given to all those companies supplying a grant. ## **Financial Report and Accounts 2021-22**

A brief summary of the key points of the group’s finances over the twelve months of April 2021 to March 2022, followed by details of the accounts at the end of the financial year.

**Subscriptions:** Now fully up and running after a turbulent couple of years, the difficult decision was taken to raise the membership subscriptions in order to cover the cost of Capitation and the running of the sections.

The vast majority of existing members and all new members are now paying the new rate.

We thank those paying their membership subscriptions as this means we have sufficient funds moving forward to pay for Capitation and the running of the groups.

**Capitation:** This is the annual charge levied by the Scout Association on every uniformed person in the Scout movement. It covers the support and structures at District, County and National level, including the significant levels of insurance required for youth work today.

The Capitation for 2020/21 of £1928 was paid in this tax year 2021/22.

The Capitation for 2021/22 of £3600 was also paid in this tax year 2021/22, meaning that we are up to date with all capitation payments.

While we have £3000 put to one side in Skipton Building Society to cover the capitation costs as a contingency, there are sufficient funds building up in the account for the upcoming year ahead.

**Rental Income:** With the reopening of the building we have been able to lease the space out to a number of community groups during the daytime, bringing an income of £2725 for this year, helping to cover the maintenance and running costs of the building.

**Renovations:** With the fitting of the roller shutter on the kitchen hatch, the upper floor renovations were completed. A new, more secure set of doors were fitted to the outer ground floor. Our spend on these renovations came to £6671.04.

While thoughts turn to plans for the renovation for the ground floor, our immediate attention is needed to raise funds to replace the ailing roof, estimated to cost in the region of £25,000 - £30,000.

**Covid19:** The group received Covid support and Omicron grants to the value of £10,667, helping towards the continued costs of making the build Covid safe and towards the loss of income from not being able to fully function previously.

**Bank Accounts:** With the continued difficulties faced with banking through the Yorkshire Bank, the decision was taken to open a NatWest account. All funds with the exception of those raised from subscriptions this financial year were moved to this new account, with the Yorkshire Bank account being left to collect subscriptions and to pay for group activities.

By splitting the funds, it is more transparent as to which funds are available for running the groups and which funds are available to maintain and run the building.

With the subsequent closure of the branch of the Yorkshire Bank in Keighley, we are now in the process of opening a second NatWest account to replace the Yorkshire Bank account.

**Year End:** We ended 2021/22 with a balance between the two accounts of £20,343.29, with £12,000.00 having been raised so far through grants for the new roof.

Covid19 has still been a challenge us through 2021/22, with fundraising opportunities still being limited. We thank the companies that were able to provide us with grants for their generosity, as it means that we have been able to purchase equipment and put money towards replacing the roof.

Going forward we will continue to rent out the building to groups in the wider community, which goes a long way towards the continued running costs, and we hope to find more fundraising opportunities within the community once again, so that we can start to build up funds for the renovations of the lower floor of the building, and replace the roof.

## **5[th] Skipton Scouts Section Annual Report 2021-22**

Scouting at 5th has got back on track following the turbulent past few years. It has at times, been a challenge to deliver this with outbreaks of the virus popping up and decimating attendance figures. But we keep plodding forward.

We have managed to achieve a nights away with the scouts having a sleepover (no sleep) at The Dump with a special festive meal (including Halal Turkey).

A great achievement was the Hike for Ukraine which all the scouts got involved in the planning of the route etc. The grand total raised for the event was £1600.

Other focuses have been on map reading, situational and hazard awardness, First Aid and also showing off their skills. The Scouts have now secured a stall on Skipton Sheep Day which they will be showcasing their talents whilst trying to recruit new volunteers into the group.

It is with great sadness that we shall be bidding farewell to our Assistant Leader, who is moving away from the area and securing a teaching post. Good luck Ellen for the future.

I will be stepping down from the role of Leader to Assistant Leader as my new work role means that I have less time to give to planning sessions and leading them with times when I might have to disappear quickly if called out. If anybody knows of somebody that could fill the role of leader, then please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Euan Hilton Scout Leader (Departing) 5[th] Skipton (Parish Church) Scouts

## **5th Skipton Cub Scouts Annual Report 2021-22**

I would like to start my report by thanking my assistant leaders Carol and Debbie as without their help I would not be able to plan and deliver am exciting and varied programme for the cubs. I’d also like to thank Colin as GSL, Imogen as AGSL and Steve Gower as without them we would not have managed to offer camps and sleepovers.

It is great to return to face to face scouting. We’ve had a real push at up-skilling the cubs to help develop those skills missed due to online learning.

We have run a sleepover at the Dump where 14 cubs joined us for a range of activities including Kelly kettles, knife skills, knots and indoor archery. 12 cubs are also attending a Jubilee themed camp the Playaway, Eshton Grange at the end of May.

Cubs have also enjoyed a visit to Skipton fire station, helped plant seedlings with Incredible Edible, taken part in some emergency aid sessions and completed a treasure hunt around Skipton. We took part in the group Hike for Ukraine, Remembrance Day Parade and St. George’s Day.

I have awarded a range of activity and challenge badges and 3 cubs achieved their Chief Scout Silver Award before moving onto scouts.

The cub leader team has lots of exciting things planned for the next 12 months. However we do need more people to step up and volunteer their time to enable us to continue to offer an exciting and varied programme.

Catherine Walton-Brown

Cub Leader

## **5[th] Skipton Beavers Annual Report 2021-22**

Beavers returned to face to face meetings socially distanced after Easter 2021, Catherine worked hard to bring some normality back for the children. The weeks were mixed with times where meetings had to go back online again unfortunately. Many members stuck with it throughout and they are to be commended for putting up with endless Zoom meetings. A huge thank you goes out to Catherine and Carol for all their hard work with Beavers and especially for all the exciting adventures. Late in the summer it was agreed that they would both move up to run Cubs instead.

Colin and I took over in September, back to where we started. We’ve had many exciting adventures including a trip to Skinnerground Wood and a brilliant Beaver activity day. We’ve worked towards a lot of badges including fitness, safety, musician 1 and we’ve also joined up with Incredible Edible to work on the gardening badge. Members attended both the Remembrance and St George’s Day parades.

Over the coming term we have had to request extra help from parents to ensure we can offer more outdoor activities with the children. It is our intention to request more help over the coming months whilst we try to attract more adult members.

## **5[th] Skipton Squirrels Annual Report 2021-22**

After the successful Hedgehog Pilot scheme ended in July 2021 5[th] Skipton transferred to the Squirrel program, still following the family model as this is being trialled until December 2022. All but 1 of our Hedgehogs transferred to Beavers and the remaining member moved to Squirrels. Squirrels continued to run in the Saturday morning slot until March 2022 when it had to move to fortnightly meetings due to leader commitments.

12 Squirrels and their parents have been invested although regular attending numbers are much lower at around 6. We have enjoyed many activities and completed the Super Cook, Emergency Aid 1, Let’s Celebrate and Explore badges to name just a few. We have been to Bog Wood and enjoyed a campfire along with a range of other outdoor activities. We’ve done a huge range of other activities including baking, gardening and story telling.

I would like to thank Colin for his continued assistance with this Section as without him it wouldn’t happen.
