5th Skipton Scout Group Report 2021
It’s been another difficult year for scouting at Fifth Skipton, due to Covid we have spent another big portion of the year online. Always a tricky time for what is traditionally an after school activity. More screen time is the last thing that young people, who have spent all day online, need. My appreciation and thanks to the leaders that did a remarkable job keeping the Scouts from all sections engaged so that we had some members left to get back to face to face Scouting. You made online scouting not only interesting, but fun too. Having taken part in a number of these meetings, my overwhelming memory of them is the young people smiling and in the best Scouting tradition – doing their best.
While online scouting was trying our patience work continued on our home, The Dump. We managed to secure funding for and the installation of a commercial grade kitchen. Ruksana and Samm again worked their magic to find the money and Euan and Jon oversaw the installation. This and a myriad of other jobs seem to have taken up a great deal of the teams time. The Dump is being dragged into the 21st century and is increasingly a venue that the young people deserve. We have a computer and telephone system that wouldn’t disgrace any office, a CCTV system and security lighting that are equal to the job of protecting a home that the Group is increasingly proud of, and remote access to the environmental and alarm systems. Who would have thought it, internet at The Dump! Euan and Jon have undertaken the bulk of this work and “Thank You” seems a poor reward for their efforts.
The Dump is now beginning to earn it’s keep too. It is a venue that is in a fit state to market and Jon needs to be thanked for not only implementing, but also managing the booking system.
This is only a small part of the work that has been undertaken to make sure the group not only survives, but thrives this year. A lot of work has gone on behind the scenes.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the whole team who have made it all possible. The Exec committee for their assistance in steering the group and the Leader team for keeping the young people engaged enough to stay with us. Samm and Ruksana for their remarkable ability to provide the money to pay for what we want to achieve, Jon and Euan for building management and maintenance, Imogen and Jon for their administrative assistance, and Alison for the under valued task of keeping the records of what we decide to do.
Now we are getting back to face to face scouting the Leaders are doing an amazing job. Despite the difficult restrictions placed upon us we are almost back at a normal scouting experience. I have attended a great many sessions and I think a lot of people both young and older have rediscovered something inside themselves. It is always a pleasure to watch people grow.
The Dump itself seems to have regained it’s heart. Previously it was like an empty school, just a little too quiet. Now it is, once again, filled with the excited shouts and laughter of young people learning new skills while having a lot of fun.
Along with the young people being back it has been great to see new leaders come onboard. New volunteers enhancing the group, bringing new experiences, and finding their level. We’ve also said farewell to some and we wish them all the best in the future. With their departure we are looking for new volunteers to fill the spaces they have left. If you have any interest at all I would recommend you speak to us. It is an immensely rewarding thing to do, you will become a part of a dedicated team, learn new skills, and play an increased role in the development of a better society. As Baden Powell himself said – “leave the world a little better than you found it.”
Looking to the future we have to maintain our focus on delivering the best Scouting experience we can to the current group of young people and setting the foundation for generations to come. We have made an excellent start, but need to stay reactive and not get set in our ways. The world is dynamic, things change, new ideas are essential to keep the group relevant. We have to adapt to meet new challenges.
If the last couple of years have taught me anything it is that Fifth Skipton Scout Group is more than capable of meeting any challenge it faces. No problem is seemingly too great. I’m proud to be a small part of the group, proud to know every single member both adult and young person, I thank you all for your contributions and look forward to many more Scouting adventures in the future.
Colin Hunter. Group Scout Leader.
Chair's Report
This has been an extraordinary year bringing many challenges and difficulties for everyone. I would therefore like to thank everyone associated with the Group leaders, helpers, executive members for all their hardwork in keeping the Group functioning and delivering scouting to our young people in whatever form restrictions allowed.
Thank you also to all the parents who were able to support the group financially by continuing to pay their subscriptions to help ensure the Group could cover its core costs.
The first floor of the building has now been renovated and is being used by the Group. It is also being rented by the local community helping to raise funds to support the Group. However, the renovations and need for further fundraising has not stopped. We need to replace our leaky roof and finish the renovations on the ground floor. We therefore need to continue raising funds through events and grants. Anyone who can help please get in touch.
Finally I hope we can soon start delivering scouting in it’s fullest sense and offering our young people the outdoor experiences they desperately need after such a difficult year.

Financial Report and Accounts 2020-21
A brief summary of the key points of the group’s finances over the twelve months of April 2020 to March 2021, followed by details of the accounts at the end of the financial year.
Subscriptions: While we continued to collect subscriptions by standing order, these did drop owing to being closed for Covid19 and not taking in any new members. We thank those who were able to continue paying their membership subscriptions as this has helped greatly in keeping the building running.
Capitation: This is the annual charge levied by the Scout Association on every uniformed person in the Scout movement. It covers the support and structures at District, County and National level, including the significant levels of insurance required for youth work today.
The capitation for 2019/20 of £2809 was paid in this tax year 2020/21.
We have £3000 put to one side in Skipton Building Society to cover the capitation costs for 2020/21, which are yet to be paid.
Rental Income: There was no rental income this financial year owing to the building being closed under Covid19 regulations.
Renovations: These were completed in the early part of this financial year and all works have now been paid for.
Covid19: The group received Covid support grants to the value of £19,431.00 which meant that the running costs of the building could be met, and all the necessary Covid safety measures could be installed to make the building Covid compliant for going back to face to face meetings.
Year End: We ended 2020/21 with a balance of £15,838.31
Covid19 continued to challenge us through 2020/21, meaning that fundraising opportunities were non-existent in their usual form. We thank the companies that were able to provide us with grants for their generosity, as it has meant that the upper part of the building has been able to be completed ready for the welcome return of face to face scouting.
Going forward we are now in a position to rent out the building to groups in the wider community which will go a long way towards the continued running costs, and we hope
with the further lifting of Covid restrictions that fundraising opportunities within the community may once again start to present themselves.

5[th] Skipton Scouts Section 2020-21
Well, what a second year as the Leader of the scout section. I thought the first year was a trying one, but the second has proved to be another challenging and different time.
Firstly, I would like to welcome Ellen as the Assistant leader for the scouts. I would also like to thank those who have assisted me this year. Ellen, Harry, Jonny, Samm (treasurer), Colin and Imogen have all assisted where they can which has meant we could try and deliver a varied programme for the scouts.
I am also sad that we lost 6 of our experienced scouts as they had reached the 14year-old status! Unfortunately, due to covid and other pressures only two have carried on their scouting careers with Explorers.
Online scouting brought its challenges with microphones, cameras and random backgrounds. It was difficult especially with everybody being “Zoomed Out” but there was some great engagement.
We did manage to get one Face to Face meeting just before Christmas and it was great to see the scouts.
Since we managed to meet face to face this year the scouts have engaged really well even though we have so many restrictions including the wearing of face covering and social distancing (which does make some activities impossible). The afternoon in Bog Wood was a memorable time as it showed how much information they had remembered and that they had a genuine enthusiasm for learning and scouting.
Looking forward I am feeling really positive that we can thrive with our group and we can find new ways of learning whilst still keeping that great scouting focus.

5th Skipton Cub Scouts Annual Report 2020-21
The year started during COVID-19 restrictions, meetings online meant working very differently with the Cubs. Initially meetings were run by the Senior Leaders as Dan found his feet, we covered the chef badge by learning how to make chicken kebabs and apple crumbles, we learnt about safety in the home and healthy eating too. Dan helped us all to achieve the Astronomer badge by learning about and identifying some constellations in the night sky and finding out about our Scout Ambassador Tim Peake. We then became creative decorating glass jars for Christmas and then learning how to draw a landscape with a special guest Rachael.
We returned to face to face after the Easter holidays and invested both Dan and Debbie as Leaders. The Cubs adapted well to the new routines and outdoor investitures began so that parents could watch. We finally caught up with investing all the Cubs who moved up either before or during lockdown and gave out about 200 badges! Our proudest achievement this year has been helping both James and Joseph to achieve their Chief Scout Silver Awards (and parents for facilitating additional work at home due to the restrictions) …. Congratulations lads you’ve worked so hard!
Running the sessions with a split section has caused us challenges this term, but with social distancing it has been the only way to help meet restrictions to keep everyone safe, hopefully in September we can return as a full section (restrictions permitting).
Dan has stepped down as Section Leader due to other commitments so currently Cubs have 3 Assistant Leaders and 2 Section Assistants, Senior Leaders are planning and supporting these Leaders to run the section. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them all for their continued support at Cubs and look forward to trips out and camps with them all soon.
Imogen Swales Assistant Group Scout Leader
5[th] Skipton Beavers Annual Report 2020-21
After some initial trepidation and the recognition that the prospect of any face to face beavers was still a long way off we started to run weekly zoom meetings in October with 2/3 of the group joining in every week. These sessions enabled us to complete lots of badge work. We had fun making mug cakes, designing our own pizzas, making bug hotels, planting seeds, looking at the solar system and the stars to name a few activities we covered. A number of beavers took part in the online Ripon District Sleepover and all enjoyed sleeping in the dens they had made.
After 13 months of remote beavers, we were all really pleased to return to the Dump and face to face meetings in April. We invested 6 new beavers as part of our return to face to face meetings.
Since returning to face to face meetings we have had fun with some science experiments, had a go at tying knots, played games in the park and completed a treasure hunt around Skipton.
A large proportion of the group moved to cubs during closure, 5 of these were awarded their bronze award and another 5 beavers have received their bronze award since returning to face to face meetings.
Carol and I are looking forward to planning lots more scouting adventures during the next 12 months; however this will only be possible if I have some reliable adult volunteers.
Catherine Walton-Brown Beaver Leader
5[th] Skipton Hedgehogs Annual Report 2020-21
The year started during COVID-19 restrictions, meetings online meant working very differently with the Hedgehogs and their parents. We kept to our Saturday morning meeting slot online via Teams and enjoyed lots of activities including cooking and baking, lots of creativity and learning about other cultures and faiths. We celebrated Diwali by making puja lamp holders and celebrated Chinese New Year with our own Chinese buffets. We were able to meet face to face for one meeting before Christmas with a Christmas party… it was amazing to finally have some children in the new building and to hear them giggling and having fun…. Something which the building has really lacked!
Since returning to face to face meetings the children have adapted brilliantly to the spots and the new routine, we’ve baked and played lots of games… we all loved our games day playing with the new parachute! Colin helped us all to learn some early map skills creating coordinate pictures… we couldn’t believe it when one was a hedgehog! Our most challenging session was making fruit pizzas using proper kitchen knives… very proud that we didn’t need any plasters! The highlight of this half term was a brilliant day at Bog Wood where we cooked on a fire, built a huge den, explored and created some wild art.
Looking forward almost all of our Hedgehogs are scurrying up to Beavers this summer and Hedgehogs are going to be transformed into Squirrels, more information on this over the coming months.
I would like to thank Colin Hunter for being an excellent side kick during the Pilot scheme and for believing that we could create such a fun section to work with.
