District Chair’s Report 2022

After 2 online AGM’s it is nice to finally be planning a face to face AGM. I think we can all reflect on how challenging life has been for the last 2 years but what an amazing job the leaders of the district have done to support the young people in our area.

We have seen district events back on the calendar, the Beaver day at Flamingoland and Scout backwoods skills day at Clotherhome farm were both a great successes. We also had the district leader skills training day at Clotherholme Farm, which was well attended and a great day for learning. DAS have been busy organising Das Quest for the Cubs and various face to face events. Its also great to read the Group reports which certainly show that Ripon Scouting has burst back into life after the unprecedented times we have all been living in lately.

I must thank Mike Collins & John Helliwell for their continued work on getting the compliance up to date/sorted and assisting the GSL’s in ensuring they are compliant within their own groups.

Liz & David and their team have kept the appointments rolling through, we have also increased the numbers on the committee this year, thanks to those who have joined the ranks. Its always great to see new leaders joining the district but recruitment is still a challenge. Cath McMorland has done a great job with managing the badge orders as always and has committed to stay on as badge secretary until January 2023. So we are on the hunt for a new Badge secretary if you or someone you know is interested in assisting it would be good to have an overlap with Cath so they can learn the ropes .

The District Executive has as ever been keeping a watchful eye over district matters, many thanks to them all for their time and assistance. If you would like to join the team please get in touch.

Finally I must say a big thanks to John Lockwood and his ADC team along with all the leaders and DAS members in the district who do an awesome job of ensuring Scouting in Ripon & District is kept running smoothly.

District Commissioner’s Report

This last year has seen us come out of Covid19 pandemic restrictions and back to our normal face to face scouting. While our membership dropped by around 30% we are now seeing a resurgence of young people and adult leaders wanting to be part of Scouting and what we stand for.

We have a complete new section, ‘Squirrels’ and their ‘Drey’ has seen real positive interest with them enjoying the start of their Scouting journey. The beavers have been having fun and been to the Zoo amongst other things, our Cubs and Scouts have been very busy with their group programmes and are both looking forward to Summer camps coming up. The Explorers have been very busy with their programme, Duke of Edinburgh awards and higher national Scouting awards. Well done to all our sections.

All of our young members are supported, encouraged and cajoled along by their leaders, whose passion and commitment to Scouting is truly fantastic and who are supported by the parents and Group Executives. Our District Executive and Team have been kept busy making sure we are all up to date with training, keeping us compliant with the latest rule changes cascaded down from headquarters, making sure our finances are kept in in order, planning our District events and supporting the work of all our groups, young members and the Scouting organisation.

So what’s in the future, our numbers are growing as more young people want to be involved in Scouting. We have a great young member contingent from the District who along with their International Service Team will be representing us along with North Yorkshire and the UK at the World Jamboree in Korea next year. Our best wishes and support go with them. We are looking to go to events across the county and further that will give our young members truly memorable experiences as well as some of the leaders too, Leaders are planning on getting permits to give our young members more adventurous times, more badges / awards for our young members to achieve and most of all fun to be had by all.

So it leaves me as District Commissioner to say a massive THANK YOU to you all for the outstanding work that you do.

ADC Beavers Report

This past year saw 35 years of Beavers; and the District Beavers were set the challenge of undertaking 35 different activities to earn themselves a special birthday badge. This was then due to culminate in a celebration at the District day in October. Unfortunately this was cancelled as the consensus across the District was that colonies preferred to celebrate it within their own group rather than all together. Beavers at both 1[st] Topcliffe and 4[th] Ripon did take part in the challenge; and incorporated them into their own celebrations; and so gained their special badges.

Moving into 2022, March saw a fantastic day out at Flamingoland Zoo; with 94 Beavers and Squirrels joining together for a District day out, with groups from 1[st] Boroughbridge, 1[st] Sowerby, 1[st] Topcliffe, 4[th] Ripon and 6[th] Ripon attending. The weather was kind to us, so we picnicked in the sun. All groups enjoyed a tour of the zoo, a workshop; and lots of freetime to play and explore further before heading home tired and happy. A big shout out to all the leaders and parents who attended and made the day possible; I had some great feedback from families and groups. All of the children attending received a goody bag and a commemorative camp blanket badge. My sincere apologies to all the leaders who attended; next time I will order badges for the leaders too! After all expenses, there was £60.72 left; which will be used towards the next day planned for July.

Plans are already coming together for the next two events; a water activity afternoon in July; and a sleepover at The Deep in November.

1[st] Boroughbridge Scout Group Report

The Group has recovered well from the difficulties of recent times, sections having kept in contact through weekly newsletters and activities and then Zoom, but everyone was glad to return to real meetings again and enjoy both indoor and outdoor programmes. There has been great enthusiasm for Scouting around Boroughbridge with a ceaseless flow of youngsters wanting to come and share the experience.

The two Beaver colonies have been busy, helping young ones to regain confidence and enjoy the out-of-doors. They have been learning to work together, gaining basic skills - and running off steam after intensive days at school! Many of them met other Beavers from the District when they had a great day at Flamingoland.

Cubs have benefitted from new leaders who have

completed Wood Badge training and during a weekend at Thornthwaite Activity Centre were able to gain the Photographer Activity Badge whilst exploring the beautiful surroundings. They have been involved with ‘Brighter

Boroughbridge’, helping with litter-picks and enjoyed visiting the local Fire Station.

Meanwhile, the Scout Section is currently running with 40+ members, several new to the movement. Many are needing to learn, or brush-up on, basic skills, particularly for hiking, camping and other outdoor pursuits. As well as enjoying an introduction to fencing and various team-building challenges, Scouts have had opportunities to take part in map-reading training and both indoor and outdoor Nights Away experiences at weekends and walk on the Cleveland Way. Despite having fewer opportunities in their early days as Scouts, several have, nonetheless, gained the Gold Chief Scouts Award before moving on.

As in previous years, the Group has been involved with Rotary International in filling shoeboxes for those in need in other countries. The appeal this time filled 72 boxes and Scouts were able to present them to the local representative.

1st Topcliffe Scout Group Report

This last year we have welcomed Squirrels to our group, they are delightful characters who have blended in well with the rest of the group, we have had some already move onto Beavers these young people have earned they Chief Scout Acorn award with some extra input from home. The Drey is currently at 16 young people, which is a comfortable number for their age. We have a waiting list for Squirrels and Cubs.

Our group have carried on with using all 3 sites we use and even managed many trips out, Hikes & camping, All sections which allow camping have had at least 1 night away this last year which was wonderful to see since the last few years have being a little challenging.

Awards & badges have carried on being worked on & we have awarded 4 Acorn Awards, 9 Bronze, 2 Silver. We have many young people close to their top awards, which they will have earned by end of the term.

The leaders have again found time to organise fundraising events for the group & Topcliffe Village Hall. I would like to give a wholehearted Thank You to ALL leaders, Helpers and committee and our families for supporting the group in all that the sections do.

Hillside Scout Group Report

A year with lots of variety as a result of Covid. Zoom meetings, outdoor meetings and home studies along with Badges being delivered through letter boxes by Leaders. Thank goodness things are getting back to a sort of normality with face to face meetings, outings and camps all able to take place again.

Numbers are almost back to pre-pandemic levels with a full Beaver Colony and Cub Pack. Scout numbers are growing steadily although we are lacking older members. Total youth membership at the time of writing is 91.

Leadership numbers have increased with no losses as a result of the Pandemic

Our AGM has been re-scheduled for July 13[th] and the Scout Cooking Competition is due to take place on 12[th] June.

Members will be participating in a wide variety of County, District and Group events over the Summer months, culminating we hope in the Scout expedition to Hag Dyke before Autumn sets in. This was originally booked for 2020.

As well as receiving Covid Rate Relief during the Pandemic the Group successfully bid for £2000 from the Hambleton District Council Making a Difference Grant to provide floor covering for the new annexe and toilet area. Our gratitude is extended to the Government, District Council and members of the public for enabling this financial aid.

On top of this, external bookings for the hall have remained buoyant so the Group’s finances remain sound, inspite of us not charging membership fees for much of the Pandemic.

1[st] Sowerby Scout Group Report

Its safe to say this has been a year like no other for us in Scouting. Due to the global pandemic we were forced to find different way to meet and run activities engaging Zoom to meet online and getting our HQ updated to be able to meet safely inside/outside. Our numbers dwindled slightly (understandable as online meetings are not everyone’s cup of tea) but are now back up to strength. As we own a HQ (jointly with the local Guides) we were able to claim the government grants which has allowed us to reduce fees and create a financially stable future for the group.

All the sections are running well, highlights for the Beavers have been visiting the firestation, Backwoods cooking, Den building, litterpicking with the Hambleton Wombles, making bug hotels and of course the District Beaver Day at Flamingoland.

The Cubs gained a new leader early in 2021 when Aston joined myself and Aimée in the leader team. We managed to meet outside on the field behind our HQ when we were allowed to with a full programme including Backwoods cooking, astronomy, pioneering, a trip to the Army camp and Cundall manor to do some axe throwing.

The Scouts have also had a busy time, we purchased some hammocks (partly with assistance from Linden homes £500 grant) and camped for a weekend in November which the scouts loved. We have also been to the North Yorkshire Waterpark for paddleboarding and waterpark fun, visited the Warhammer shop in Harrogate and the Lime Tree Observatory (with new planetarium) which all complemented our weekly base scouting activities. We’ve also helped the Nidderdale Game Keepers with some woodland management and run the successful district backwoods skills day in Ripon. Lastly we are proud to have one of our scouts, William, attending the World scout Jamboree in Korea 2023 so we are busy helping him with some fundraising to achieve his goal.

Massive thanks as always to the leaders, committee members and parents who assist in keeping the group running, especially over the last year.

6[th] Ripon (Cathedral) Scout Group Report

2021 / 2022 has proved to be a different year, with Scouting slowly coming back to face-to-face meetings and young people and leaders actually meeting each other after many months on Zoom.

Beavers saw a very slight reduction in numbers at the January census, with other sections remaining static, however the indications are, that now we are back to full faceto-face meetings numbers are on the rise.

The Group held its traditional Group weekend away at Watson Scout Centre, where walking, crafting, playing activities were undertaken including a great campfire wholly led and run by our Young Leaders.

The Beaver section is short of a permanent leader; however, it is still offering a fantastic programme of activities from learning about how to care for animals; what they can and what they cannot re-cycle; making illuminated bugs and flying spaceships; feeding a support dog carrot; pushing a wheelchair around Sainsburys; Chinese New Year; Night Hiking; Pancake racing, Camp fire & Mud Kitchen and games and more games.

The Cub Section continues to be led by Kim, ably assisted by Trish undertaking a myriad of exciting activities and both indoors and out

Roz Bardon continues to lead the Scout Troop supported by Craig, Simon, Adam & Ian. Roz seems to be able to manage her team of leaders very effectively, even when she is away looking after her mum in the Southeast.

6[th] Ripon has continued its now tradition of planting another 400 trees / bushes, from the Woodland Trust.

Our Leadership Team has remained static this year, however additional activity training is already planned to ensure that further permits are obtained and more activities can be offered safely to our young people.

The number top awards have increased with three Chief Scout Bronze, seven Silver & three Gold Awards. Thirteen in total – well done everyone

4[th] Ripon Scout Group

I have been in post since September 2021. As usual you volunteer to help and hey presto, you're in a role.

The Sections have wonderful leaders and assistants who plan very exciting programmes for the young people to enjoy and have coped tremendously with the safety and hygiene regulations of meetings post Covid-19.

I would like to thank Tessa, Sam, Nicki and Val, David and Liz for all their help with the Group and the 2 young leaders, Kovu and Joseph who help with Cubs and Scouts. We are trying to recruit a Scout Leader but in order for the Scouts to continue to meet all the leaders have come together to help run the meetings. A big Thank You to you all.

The Cubs and Scouts are looking forward to attending the camps that have been organised by the County and District and the Beavers can’t wait for their next District Event.

White Horse Explorer Scout Unit Report

Its been a busy year at WHESU, we worked hard to get things in place to start meeting face2face early April 2021 and it was great to get back to some kind of normality. Our 2 new leaders (Ian & Dawn) took the helm and we had an exciting programme throughout the year.

Our numbers bolstered after dropping slightly (due mainly to online only sessions) and we ran a mixture of Explorer lead evenings and outdoor events such as scavenger photo hunts, hikes, cycle hikes, Adventure water park visits & widegames.

In the summer we unfortunately had the news that Ian & Dawn would be moving south (due to Ian’s redundancy) but they stayed with us until January and Eddie became more involved to assist with day to day running of the unit.

Over the winter/spring period we had robot wars, quiz evenings, creative & art evenings, crazy pop party, pioneering and a 3 week Chef badge programme that ended with a show stopper bake off with some amazing results.

We have just welcomed a few new explorers and with a few more due before the summer we will be back up to over 20 explorers soon. On the leader front I have now committed to stay at the unit as leader with Eddie and a new leader in the pipeline soon. Thanks to all the people involved in making the unit successful, it’s a crazy mix sometimes but it works well, we were swimming in the North Sea at Redcar last week (mid may) and having fun on the beach & cooking hotdogs, fun times 😊

District Active Support Report

The Active Support Unit has kept in touch during the difficulties of the last two years and members were keen to start meeting up again, with consideration as to how to do so safely. Whilst there have been few opportunities for supporting District activities, nevertheless, members have been asked to do particular tasks such as running meetings when leaders were unavailable and providing staff for county events.

Social activities have been resumed, with the annual Barbecue last summer taking place on a beautiful day and this year’s currently being planned. There was an opportunity to get together in the autumn for a meal and convivial evening at The Blue Bell in Kirby Hill and the annual January dinner, to which all district leaders and executive members are invited, took place at The Bay Horse in Rainton. Each

occasion has been an opportunity for particular members to be presented with well-deserved prestigious Scouting awards.

DASQUEST in 2021 involved a visit for Beavers to Studley Park and this year, Cubs are involved with a treasure hunt in Thirsk, all those taking part proudly wearing the special DASQUEST badge.

A visit to High Batts Nature Reserve is eagerly awaited with DAS member Colin Slator, founder of the reserve, leading us round…. and of course, tea to follow!

Of our current 38 members, many hold at least one other current role in Scouting, as leaders with units, administrative posts or with county activity teams; most have been actively involved in past years and offer a wealth of experience and expertise to today’s young people. All adults are very welcome to join the Unit which provides backup support to Scouting in the District as well as opportunities for social activities with friends old and new.

Scout Network Report

As I enter my final AGM cycle as Ripon and District Scout Network Commissioner, I have been able to reflect on the successes that members have achieved in the last year.

Scouting in a post-Covid environment has proved challenging for everyone, especially those Network members juggling adult life, education, work, scouting… and now babies. I am proud of the resilience our adult members have displayed in these trying times.

As always, Network members have been very busy in their sections acting as leaders and I am sure you will all agree that without volunteers, scouting simply cannot run. I am a firm believer that everyone has a place in scouting and that was visible during lockdown one, two and three; with regular zoom quizzes and virtual activities to keep us connected. Now we are back to face to face meetings, it is great to see a large Network turnout for both district and county events, with a number of members involved in county cub camp next month. I am also particularly proud of James Porter for securing his leadership role for the 25[th] World Scout Jamboree in South Korea, where he will supervise a team of scouts from our region.

This year has also seen an impressive increase in the higher awards, with two members achieving their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and three Queen’s Scouts. Perhaps the highest award of all however, is that of fatherhood and I extend my warmest congratulations to Sam and Anna on the arrival of their gorgeous little boy.

2022 will also be a very sombre year for the Scout Network in the district, as the majority of our membership who are all original members from 2016 are ageing out and will join the ranks of DAS in the Autumn term. It has been a pleasure to scout along side them for 20 years and wish them all the best in their future endeavours. This leaves a rather large opportunity for recruitment and conversations have already begun with explorers in the district surrounding next steps and their plans for the future.

Finally, as this will be the last district report I write in my current role, I wanted to say thank you. The last six and a half years have taught me a great deal about myself, scouting and the life long friends I have met along the way… as well as lessons such as NOT volunteering for everything people ask you to do (haha)!! I have very much valued and enjoyed my time as Ripon and District Scout Network Commissioner and have no doubts that you will continue to see me on many occasions.
