Group Scout Leader Report 2023/2024
6th Holme Valley (Trinity Church, Honley)
I firstly would like to thank all our Leaders from Squirrels through to Explorers for their continued commitment to Scouting and our Young Members, you all do an amazing job and all sections have had a fantastic year, completing lots of badges and having lots of fun!
Most sections are now full - with more wanting to join. Our youngest members in Squirrels have had a fantastic first year and they have recently been joined by Darren who will be helping Abi lead the section.
We have had several Leaders swap sections to help keep the group running efficiently.
Tom has moved from Beavers to Atlas Cubs and Lucy has done an amazing job of stepping in as Beaver Leader.
Thor Cubs were joined by two new leaders, Jo Hilton-Jones and Jamie Sykes. Joy Fieldsend, after being the Thor Cub Leader for many years, has now taken a back seat, she is still helping the section, but Jo and Gareth have jointly stepped up to lead. Andy moved to Beavers to help Lucy and Jill Falkingham has moved to Scouts. A massive thank you to Joy for her time as Cub Leader and for continuing to help support Jo and Gareth as they get used to their new roles.
Vicky Booth has joined us on Atlas’ Leadership team, along with Tom and Ian has moved up to Scouts.
Barry and Lynne have stepped down as Scout Leaders and are now running the Explorer’s Section, although they are often still at Scout meetings, supporting Jill & Ian in their new roles as Scout Leaders.
Alan Whiteley aka White Wolf, has also stepped down as Explorer Leader – a massive thank you for the many, many years he has helped with our Group.
The Trustee Board have been busy yet again, with the leaking roof being fully replaced, and it couldn’t have come sooner, with yet more leaks appearing in the last 6 months. This also had a knock-on effect, with damp in the main store. So, with a lot of hard work, the store was emptied cleaned, dried out and painted. With a big skip on hand, and a main hall full to bursting with items from the store, it was then all sorted, organised, thrown in the skip or cleaned and put back into the store. It was a massive job, but worth it as we can now see what we actually have!!
Helen Eldon left the Trustee Board at the start of the year - a big thank you to her – she has been a big help in the group behind the scenes - we wish her all the best for the future.
The Group has been involved in lots of events this year…
The Honley Christmas Fayre was again a huge success and we look forward to running it this year.
There was a good turnout at the Remembrance Service thank you to all for attending and looking so smart. We had a slight change to the St George’s Day celebrations this time with an afternoon of fun organised by the district. Everyone had a fantastic time, despite the weather, and we look forward to doing something similar in the future.
We held our Christmas Carol Service in Trinity Church, thank you once again for hosting this. We had quite a good turnout and it was lovely to see everybody take part – from two squirrels singing Jingle bells, up to the whole church joining in with the 12 days of Scouting.
In the summer we had our first Group Camp since Covid at Whitely Beaumont. It was a huge success with over 70 Young members joining us over the wet and muddy weekend. A big thank you to all the leaders and parents who helped – we couldn’t have done it without you!
It really has been a great year, we have a brilliant group of Volunteers here at Honley and I really am proud to be part of the Team. If you would like to join us, either in the section meetings, on the Trustee board or just to help with the maintenance of the building, you will be more than welcome, and any time you can give would be much appreciated.
I look forward to working with you for another fun filled year in scouting,
Kat Finlayson

Squirrel Report 2023/2024
Current Leaders: Abi Wears, Darren Webb
Since we opened in June 23, we have had 20 Squirrels in total join us, with 6 already moving to Beavers.
We have had walks in the woods as well as around Honley for a scavenger hunt and even a visit to Honley Library for a story! We have done multiple crafts, made slime and learning about different holidays such as Diwali and Holi festival (where they loved throwing colour paint around at each other as well as at the Leaders!).
We had a few Squirrels able to attend their first group camp for the afternoon with a few of them wanting to stay over afterwards.
We have awarded a total of 160 badges since the start including Go Wild, Story Time, Exciting Experiments as well as the All About Me, All Together, All About Adventure & All Around Us awards. Those that have earned all those awards have managed to earn our highest award possible – The Golden Acorn Award – a total of 8 Squirrels have earned this award.
Darren has recently joined Abi on the Squirrel Leadership Team and we have several parents who stay and help most weeks - a big thank you to you all!!

Beaver Report 2022/2023
Current Leaders: Lucy Crowder, Claire Hallas, Andy Lowe, Simon Wears
Since the last AGM meeting, we have run a packed itinerary getting the Beavers out and about as much as possible.
We have been out for a number of walks, including nature walks, map reading, pond dipping, woodland activities and grass sledging. The always popular fire lighting has happened and in the final summer half term we ran our version of the Olympics, with the Beavers being put into countries (teams) and doing lots of team races/competitions to get points for their country. The water obstacle course was a particular favourite of mine!
Due to the success of Elf camp last year, it ran again this year. The Beavers were put into groups and had to make their own pizza for tea as well as put up their own tent and make their beds. We made various Christmas related crafts and played lots of games and watched a Christmas movie with hot choc. I can’t say a huge amount of sleep was had. Getting up to go to the toilet seemed to be a real novelty for the first couple of hours for them and a few homesick Beavers ensured it was the wee small hours before any leaders got to sleep! It was great fun and we plan to run it again this year!
Throughout the year we have had help from our young leader Rory, who has now left us to go to university. We also had help from Darcey and Clodagh, our two year 10 girls who have helped all year as part of their Duke of Edinburgh award. Thank you Rory and girls!
We said goodbye to Tom at Easter as he went to help lead the Cubs, Lucy took up the helm and we have said hello to Andy and most recently Simon. Both have been kind enough to volunteer their services as a leader, now their children have joined Beavers. The help from all the leaders is massively appreciated.
We are focusing on trying to get some of the younger Beavers to see if they can get their Bronze award. We’re doing lots of work towards the challenge badges and trying to involve parents as much as possible to help complete other badges.
Beavers is very popular at the minute and we have a huge waiting list which we’re trying to get through!
Thor Cubs Report 2023/2024
6th Holme Valley (Trinity Church, Honley)
Current Leaders: Jo Hilton-Jones, Gareth Firth, Joy Fieldsend, Jamie Sykes
Activities – highlights
Autumn term showed the Cubs’ versatility: we were naturalists, (Hallowe’en) scientists, navigators and (backwoods) cooks. We did teamwork challenges and yoga, made egg parachutes and Christmas decorations. And played lots of games and went to the panto.
In Spring term we were bird-watchers, chefs, climbers (went bouldering), astronomers, learnt emergency aid and planted trees with River Holme Connections. And played lots of games and enjoy a Lego evening! Summer term was busy, and the start of us adjusting to Joy to no longer being Akela. We undertook a wide range of activities. We continued building on map reading skills, but unfortunately our walk from Castle Hill was called off due to a Yellow weather warning. We made the most of better weather being outdoors as much as possible. Activities included den building, grass-sledging, wide games (learning tunnel ball and Danish long ball), undertaking the athletics badge and our version of a colour run. We had great support from local partners, with a water and moorland safety session with West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, and balsam bashing and tree planting sessions with River Holme Connections. We also had a water activities day at Green Withens. The year finished with the traditional water fight and hot dogs on the open fire.
Camps
We held our Summer Camp with Atlas Cubs at Whitley Beaumont the first weekend of September (Friday evening to Sunday late morning). It was a lot of fun with lots of activities, including den building (the collection of bracken was on an industrial scale), pioneering, pond dipping, camp fire entertainment and the popular water slide.
We held our Spring Camp at Scammonden Activity Centre the start of Summer term (Friday evening to Sunday late morning), with several Atlas Cubs joining us. Despite the weather being challenging it was another success. Activities included a hike (following the navigation guide and challenges), water filtration, nature pictures, indoor climbing and evening entertainment.
A significant number of Thor Cubs joined the Group Camp in Summer term with its varied activities. Attendees showed great resilience with the ongoing heavy rain.
Members & Investitures
Membership is now at 18, with 8 new Cubs since September 2023
Badges
196 badges were awarded over the year, including 17 for nights away, 13 navigator, 15 hikes, 15 emergency first aid and 13 athletics. 5 were awarded their Chief Silver Scouts award and 2 more achieved it before the end of term.
Leavers/Leadership Changes
Joy continued in the Akela role up to the end of Spring term after many many years in the role, for which we are extremely grateful. Thankfully she is continuing to support us as an assistant leader and is coordinating activity bookings like Green Withens and camps. Jill Falkingham continued as a leader until the middle of the year when she moved to be a leader with Scouts, and similarly Andy Lowe moved to be a leader with Beavers – many thanks to them for all the time they have given Thor Cubs over the years.
Jo and Jamie joined as assistant leaders in September, and Gareth and Jo jointly assumed the leader role with Joy stepping back.
Christopher Mears continued being a very helpful Young Leader attending most sessions and Abigail Fieldsend joined us again as a Young Leader when possible.
And finally… a big thank you to all the parents and carers who have supported us over the year at the Wednesday sessions, the camps and additional activities we’ve undertaken over the year. We couldn’t have done what we have without them. A huge thank you to Thor Leaders for being a superb team. And massive thank you to Thor Cubs for joining in, making a difference and having fun!

Atlas Cubs Report 2023/2024
Leaders: Becky Driver, Tom Parrish, Kirsty Gedney, Vicky Booth
Highlights
The Group Camp in June 2024 was a roaring success despite terrible weather. 14 cubs from Atlas attended at Whitley Beaumont. The camp featured a range of activities from craft activities, den buildings, activity carrousel etc. The camp was organised by the GSL Kat, gaining her outside camp permit due to its organisation and all the hard work it entailed.
The summer term the cubs enjoyed highlights of Circus Skills with DareDevils, Laser Tag & Games in Honley Woods. We have been building Dens and doing lots of work towards Athletics badge.
Atlas cubs really enjoy backwood cooking and we offer this on a regular basis as all the cubs really enjoy the process of starting fires and cooking on them.
Badges
The cubs have all earned Skills, World, Teamwork and Adventure challenge badges as well as Activity badges which include Artist, Entertainer, Navigator, Science and Athletics badges.
Six cubs have received the highest award at cubs, which is the Silver Award, a credit to the cubs and the team for making this happen.
Membership
Currently Atlas Cubs have 23 members and 2 young leaders
Leadership
Becky has been leading the group since she started 8 years ago. Ian left the group in April to move up to Scouts, his role, as assistant lead was filled by Tom who moved up from Beavers. Kirsty has been assistant lead for 3 years and Vicky joined the group over summer.
We really appreciate all the support we receive from parent helpers, especially when we are doing fires and hikes as we cannot do these activities without their help.
We look forward to another year of building on this year’s successes!

Scout Report 2023/2024
Leaders: Ian Higgins, Jill Falkingham, Simon Kirby
The scouts have completed another successful year, with two scouts completing the Chief Scout Gold award. To achieve this they needed to complete the 9 challenges badges and 6 other badges as well. The scouting programme combines developing their skills and knowledge with fun activities and games. This can lead to successfully completing some badges but often developing a new skill.
This year, the scouts have developed thier resilience by camping at Bradley Woods in February just after the snowfall, climbing Marsden 3 peaks in March and completing the ‘Swift Hawk challenge’. One team won a prize.
The scouts developed their scouting skills, building fires and cooking food, making pizzas, understanding how to take care and repair puncture on bicycles and developing their first aid knowledge.
The group has changed as they older scouts have moved onto explorers and other scouts taking on new roles as patrol leaders. As scouts it is important that they respect each other and understand the feelings of others.
Towards the end of this year, the scouts made planters from pallets, attaching membrane between the slats to make a vertical planter, they paint them & planted strawberries & herbs. They cooked a minestrone on open fires, a little under cooked but still tasty. They climbed at Bradley woods where they learned to put on a harness & tie in. The leaders then ran a climbing trip outside to Pule Hill where the scouts used what what they had learned on wall onto real rock. They had an evening of laser tag in the woods. The Scouts visited Beaumont Park to have a go at orienteering. The term was concluded with an evening at Whitley Beaumont campsite playing on the water slide & cooking sausages.

Explorers Report 2023/2024
Leaders: Barry Suddick, Lynne Bradbury
Explorers have had another successful year.
Winter camp was a highlight which started with snow and finshed with mud everywhere. Everyone enjoyed the activities from climbing, abseiling, the cave bus to the campfire and meeting other groups.
The explorers have also participated in the Night Hawk challenge, Marsden 3 peaks, Fellendale canoe and cycling challenge.
At group camp, they took on a leadership role, ensuring the other sections were able to participate fully in the craft actvities. They also support the older scouts as they completed their expedition badge. This involved hiking to Whitley Beaumont and camping overnight in hammocks.
Throughout the year, at the scout hut, the explorers have updated their first aid knowledge, completed challenges set by Barry and cooked up a feast on the campfire.
We have said goodbye to two explorers who turned 18 and have gone to University and welcomed three more who have moved up from scouts.
