Group Scout Leader Report 2022-2023 6th Holme Valley (Trinity Church, Honley)

I firstly would like to thank all our Leaders from Squirrels through to Explorers for their continued commitment to Scouting and our Young Members, you all do an amazing job and all sections have had a fantastic year, completing lots of badges and having lots of fun!

Most sections are now full - with more wanting to join, unfortunately, due to lack of leaders we had to close the 2[nd] Beaver section that was opened last year, but the waiting list is no longer quite as long so the decision wasn’t a hard one to make.

We have now started our new Squirrel section for 4-6 year olds and welcome Abi Wear (or Robin as the Squirrels know her) to the leadership team. As the section didn’t start until May, there is no report from Abi this time, but the first half term was great fun with lots of games, learning about animal habitats and going on a squirrel hunt.

We have lost one of the Atlas Cub Leaders, Cathy Kirby who stepped down at Christmas, thank you for all the hard work that she put into the Group, and we wish her all the best for the future.

We also temporarily lost Kirsty Gedney who left the Beaver Section early in year, a big thank you for everything she did with Beavers, but also for returning to help with Atlas Cubs later in the year.

Lucy Crowder has joined the Beaver section alongside Tom and Claire and is doing a fantastic job – well done and thank you for joining us!

The Trustee Board have been busy yet again, the new Kitchen was installed, and a grant applied for and received from the Holme Valley Parish Council for new Barriers outside and new tables and chairs inside. They are already on with the next improvement as the roof is leaking – yet again – work will start on replacing it later in the year.

Clare Fairlie is leaving the Trustee Board as she starts her exciting new job. A massive thank you to her – she has played a big part in the group behind the scenes and will be missed - we wish her all the best for the future.

The Group has been involved in lots of events this year…

The Honley Christmas Fayre was again a huge success and following on from that we have been opening our doors along with the Honley Village Hall for the Honley Monthly Markets.

There was a good turnout at the Remembrance Service thank you to all for attending and looking so smart, unfortunately the St George’s Parade wasn’t as well attended and we hope that more members will join us this next year.

We held our first Christmas Carol Service since the Covid 19 restrictions and it was enjoyed by all – despite loosing ‘Baden Powel’ in the confusion with the Church electrics!

We were lucky to have three of our Explorers selected to join the UK Contingent attending the 25[th] World Scout Jamboree in South Korea during the summer holidays. I’m told they all had an amazing and certainly memorable time!

It really has been a great year, we have a brilliant group of Volunteers here at Honley and I really am proud to be part of the Team – we just need some more people to join us!

## **Beaver Report 2022/2023**

**Leaders: Tom Parrish, Lucy Crowder, Claire Hallas**

Since the last AGM meeting, we have consolidated our Beaver groups in to one, which runs on a Monday night.

Over the last year we have been out for a number of walks, including nature walks map reading and exploring new places.

The beaver team have tried to make the most of the nice weather by going to Magdale and doing pond dipping visiting Bradley wood for den building and fire lighting, and going grass sledging in Meltham park.

This year we had an indoor camp in the scout hut, which we called Elf camp due to it just before the Christmas holidays. The beavers were put into groups and had to make their own pizza for tea as well as put up their own tent and make their beds. The camp was a success with 11 Beavers attending. We even managed to get some sleep.

Several Beavers took part in a district Kayaking event.

We have managed to award 126 badges, including Builder, Adventure, Teamwork, Explore, Nights Away, International, Skills, Outdoor, Emergency Aid, gardening, experiment and safey, Digital Citizen & Digital Maker badges.

The beaver team would like to thank the people who support us by helping each night. We have had great help from our Young Leader Rory Fairlie.

We really enjoy the activities we do and seeing the beavers grow as individuals is amazing.

## **6[th] Holme Valley– Thor Cub Pack Annual Report September 2022– July 2023**

## **Current Leaders: Joy Fieldsend, Gareth Firth, Jill Falkingham, Andy Lowe**

## **Activities – highlights**

September saw the death of Queen Elizabeth II and we reflected on her life. In October we did team problem-solving and had a Diwali evening complete with Indian food. A busy November included firelighting, apple-bobbing and conkers, a night hike and an International evening sampling food from 4 different countries. We rounded off 2022 with a fun-filled Christmas party.

January included a Lego evening and trip to the Holmfirth panto – Dick Whittington. February saw a night hike where 3 groups raced back to HQ from Honley Woods. In March we became Scientists, Chefs and Climbers, while April saw our second Spring Camp at Scammonden and pond-dipping at Magdale. In May we completed the Navigator 2 badge, using our skills to hike back to HQ from Castle Hill. In June we were out every week cycling, grass-sledging, litter-picking and fire-lighting. We also raised over £300 for Mountain rescue selljng plants and refreshments at the Saturday market at the Scout Hut. In July we did ‘balsam-bashing’ with River Holme Connections, and finished off the year in time-honoured fashion with water games and a water-fight!

## **Camps**

Our second indoor camp at Scammonden activity centre from 31[st] March – 2[nd] April with 16 Cubs. We did a hike with a ‘surprise’ mountain rescue activity, were naturalists, did baking, played table tennis, climbed the bouldering wall, did a talent show and had a barbecue.

## **Members & Investitures**

Membership is now at 28, with 12 new Cubs since September 2022 and 4 due to move up from Beavers in September.

## **Badges**

We awarded all of the 7 Challenge badges, and loads of different activity badges. New ones we worked for this year were Environmental Conservation and International. 3 Cubs got their Chief Scout’s Silver Award and 2 more are expected to complete this over the summer.

## **Leavers/Leadership Changes**

Kat left to support Atlas Cubs. Christopher Mears continued being a very helpful Young Leader and Abigail Fieldsend joined us again as a young Leader in June.

**And finally… a big** thank you to parents for supporting us as Parent Helpers. **A huge** thank you to Thor Leaders for being a superb team. And thank you Cubs for joining in and having fun!

## **Atlas Cubs Report 2022/2023**

**Leaders: Becky Driver, Ian Higgins, Kirsty Gedney**

This last year has been as busy as ever, trying to get out and about when the weather permits.

We have covered a large number of badges, including communicator, gardening and athletics while also completing challenge badges for example our world and adventure.

The cubs have enjoyed time away from the base when we went rock climbing at Bradly woods, where we were also able to have go at create stacking. The cubs have done archery den building pond dipping and litter picking. There have been many times when the group has been out for hikes and lighting fires, and experienced open fire cooking (backwood cooking).

We have celebrated bonfire night with fires, new year with cubs’ favourite food, Chinese New Year with food inspired by China, and the end of the year with a party.

Atlas has had 11 new starts since Christmas, and we have moved up about 8 with at least 4 cubs gaining the silver award.
