Group Scout Leader Report April 2021-2022

When I came to write this report, I must admit - I had to check my dates. It is hard to believe that this time last year we were still under so many restrictions due to the pandemic.

I firstly would like to thank all our Leaders from Beavers through to Explorers for their continued commitment to Scouting and our Young Members. They all succeeded in keeping scouting safe throughout, managing social distancing, disinfecting equipment – and hands, all while trying to be heard through face masks! Well done everyone!

All sections had a busy year despite those restrictions, completing lots of badges and having lots of fun! All sections have awarded Chief Scout Awards to members, from the Beavers getting their Bronze Awards to an Explorer receiving her Chief Scout Platinum Award.

We are also very lucky to have two of our Explorers; Alfie Turton and Rory Fairley, successfully selected to join the UK Contingent attending the 25[th] World Scout Jamboree in South Korea in 2023. Well done to both. Please support them in their fundraising for this amazing experience.

Most sections are now full - with more wanting to join. We had such a long waiting list for Beavers, that in September we re-opened the second Beaver Section.

We have also had the exciting news that we can now open up a new Scout Section at Honley called the Squirrels for 4-6 year olds. At the minute however, we do not have enough leaders or volunteers to do so. If you or someone you know might be able to help at all, please, please let me know so that we can get it up and running.

We have had some sad goodbyes - Fiona our Secretary, stepped down at the last AGM and Sean had his final meeting as a Section Assistant at the Joint Cub Camp. A big thank you to both, for the hard work that they have put into the Group, and we wish them all the best for the future.

We do have some new faces though; we have three new Section Assistants - Claire Hallas has joined us in the Beaver Section, and Jill Falkingham and Andy Lowe in the Thor Cubs. Vicky Booth has also joined us on the Executive Committee as our new Secretary.

Lynne Bradbury has said goodbye to Thor Cubs, but has moved up to Scouts to be their Section Leader.

The Honley Show was back, and although on a much smaller scale the chocolate Tombola did extremely well – so much so that we ran out of Chocolate! We made sure that we had a lot more at the Honley Christmas Fayre, which was also a huge success.

We had a good turnout at the Remembrance Service thank you to all for attending and looking so smart.

Disappointingly, we had to cancel our Christmas Carol Service for the 2[nd] year running, but we hope that this year it will be back for everyone to enjoy.

The Exec team have been busy again, and after many a meeting, the new Kitchen was agreed on and purchased. I think you’ll agree that is a massive improvement and we hope that not only will it be majorly beneficial to all Sections, but also to any member’s families who wish to hire the Scout Hut for their own functions.

So I think, it has been a fantastic year, we have a brilliant group of Volunteers here at Honley and I really am so proud to be part of the Team – we just need some more people to join us!

Kat Finlayson

Group Scout Leader

## **EXEC REPORT FROM APRIL 2021 – APRIL 2022**

April 2021 saw the restart of face to face meetings across groups as things opened up after the second big lock down. At this time we had around 100 children still attending the groups. By July 2021 groups were back in full swing and the limits that there were on group sizes were removed.

By December restrictions were changing again, resulting in children 11+ having to wear face coverings. Sadly, we had to cancel the Xmas Carol Event on 17[th] December due to the rise of the omicron variant and not wanting lots of people to have to isolate over the Xmas period.

## **Funding & Significant Expenditure**

We were lucky enough to receive a grant which provided support for the running of the group in April 2021 – this supported the group with ongoing running costs. The minibuses were expensive this year, with MOT costs of around £2700 and their insurance costing around the same. We also had roof and electrical repairs which cost over £1500 and replaced the alarm system. Capitation cost – which is the sum we pay to Scouts – was in excess of £6,000.

We were the Polling Station and received some unexpected funding from this. We also received funding from the use of the minibuses at the Honley Open Gardens event in July 2021.

The chocolate donations from the ‘out of uniform’ meetings went to the Honley Show and the Xmas Fair Chocolate Tombolas – and continue to raise much needed funds for the group.

We have also had some success with the renting out of our minibuses and trailers to other groups.

## **HQ**

Work continued on HQ painting and refurbishing. A massive thanks to Barry Suddick and Kat Finlayson. Barry is able to turn his hand to anything and was the driving force in rationalising all of the equipment at HQ. Kat Finlayson was responsible for enlisting volunteers to paint/clean/tidy HQ – as well as never being seen without a paintbrush in her hand for about two months. The day that the cream carpet in the BP room was replaced for laminate flooring had to be the highlight of the refurb.

The decision was made to use some of the funding received to replace the kitchen at HQ

## **LOOKING PAST APRIL 2022**

At last, the new kitchen went in over the summer holidays.

We are looking forward to the starting of the new Squirrels group for 4 -6 year olds.

We desperately need new leaders and assistants (to support our leaders). We are also pretty thin on the ground in exec. It would be great if there were people out there who could help with fundraising and continued improvements and generally keeping ‘the wheels turning’.

## **A FINAL WORD**

To our Leaders and Assistants massive thanks. The time that you give makes a huge difference to the young people in our community and the growing numbers that we have in the groups are testament to all that hard work.

A last word for Barry Suddick who was awarded the highest honour in Scouting – the Medal for Meritorious Conduct.

## **Beaver report**

Leaders: Kirsty Gedney, Tom Parrish, Kat Finlayson & Clare Hallas.

Since the last AGM meeting, we have set up a second beaver group which runs on a Tuesday. Both groups start at 6 and finish at 7.15. Both groups have the same activities and badge aims to try and give both groups of beavers the same experience and to make things easier on the leaders who cover both nights. When we do camps and other extra activities, both groups are invited to join together, which helps as some have friends in the opposite group, giving the opportunity to work with people they don’t always get the chance to work with. We currently have 22 beavers on Monday and 25 on Tuesday. We have had 9 move up to cubs and 6 of those have received the bronze award.

Over the last year we have been out for a number of walks, including nature walks map reading and exploring new places. The beavers have enjoyed adventurous activities both with the district organised days, where they were able to have a go on the cave bus, try archery, axe throwing and tobogganing, to name just a few, to the activities we have organised e.g., grass sledging in Meltham and laser tag in the woods.

The beaver team have tried to make the most of the nice weather by going to Magdale and doing pond dipping visiting Bradley wood for den building and fire lighting, and flying kites in the park on Meltham road.

This year we managed to have an indoor camp in the scout hut, which we called Easter camp due to it being during the Easter holiday. The beavers were put into groups and had to make their own pizza for tea as well as put up there own tent and make there beds. The beavers were also given a fleece to make a camp blanket. The camp was aa huge success with 22 beavers coming along and 20 sleeping. We even managed to get some sleep.

We have managed to cover 11 badges which are World, Adventure, Teamwork, Explore, international, skills, outdoor, emergency aid, gardening, experiment and safety, while almost completing camp craft and communication. Unfortunately, due to extreme heat we had to cancel our last meeting but I am sure we will complete these badges over the next few terms.

The beaver team would like to thank the people who support us by helping each night, we have a great young leader who we find a great support along with parents who stay to help out. We really enjoy the activities we do and seeing the beavers grow as individuals is amazing.

The last thing I would like to add is that we still need someone who can commit to helping every Tuesday. We ideally need someone who is available every week through the school term, this doesn’t have to be a parent, so if anyone knows someone who may like to help, please give them the details of the beaver team.

Thank you

Zebra

(Kirsty Gedney)

## **Atlas Cubs, 6[th] Holme Valley Scouts**

## **Yearly Report 2021-22**

## **Leaders: Cath Kirby, Becky Driver, Ian Higgins, Kirsty Gedney**

We have had a very successful year, with a busy and exciting program. We have always had a full cub pack with numbers reaching 28 members at times. Our aim is to undertake exciting activities, with the emphasis on being active and outside as much as possible. Due to the large numbers, we often had to split into 2 groups and alternate the activities. We are able to do this with the numbers of leaders we have at present and with the help of the parent helpers.

During the year we have worked towards many Challenge and Activity badges. The cubs have achieved the Backwards Cooking badge and frequently practice basic firefighting and campfire skills. Our cubs can now make bread, cook pizza, quesadillas, sausages, stew and s’mores on a fire! They achieved their Pioneering badge and they really enjoyed making the knot-boards. The Road Safety badge was achieved with the help of a police parent helper who came to speak to the cubs. The Science badge involved many experiments carried out with equipment borrowed from the University.

Organised activities have included a Lego evening, den building in Honley woods, walking to Oldfield, Archery at Bradley woods, skateboarding at Honley skate park, fencing and Laser-tag in Neilly woods. We have also enjoyed creative evenings when the cubs have made marble runs, Christmas decorations, origami cards for Mothers’ Day, poppies for Remembrance Sunday and a 3-D map of their home village. We have held a talent evening, in which there was no pressure to participate, but they all took part just for fun!! We usually finish with a party at the end of the term. Atlas and Thor cubs enjoyed a fun-filled, exciting joint cub camp in June at Whitely Beaumont Scout Camp.

Our cubs are happy, fun and have developed some lovely friendships over the past year. The challenge of organising and delivery a fairly complex program to keep the cubs busy, engaged and happy throughout the year is possible due to the team spirit of the leaders and the support from the parent helpers.

## **6[th] Holme Valley– Thor Cub Pack Annual Report September 2021 – July 2022**

**Leaders: Joy Fieldsend, Gareth Firth, Jill Falkingham, Andy Lowe, Kat Finlayson.**

## **Activities – highlights**

We had a:

… kind of year.

It’s great to be back to normal Scouting!

## **Camps**

We had our really fun summer camp joint with Atlas at Whitley Beaumont (32 Cubs) from 3[rd] – 5[th] September 2021, then repeated this on 10[th] – 12[th] June 22 with 35 Cubs attending – another great camp with good weather.

We also did our first indoor camp at Scammonden activity centre from 1[st] – 3[rd] April with 21 Cubs. We did a hike with cryptic clues, baking, learnt a lot about water and the environment and moorland, played table tennis, used the bouldering wall, did team challenges and had a barbecue. (I think we’ll go there again this winter!)

## **Members & Investitures**

Membership is now at 29, with 16 new Cubs since September 2021.

## **Badges**

Skills, Adventure, Personal, World and Team Leader, Teamwork and Outdoor Challenge Award badges were awarded. Also Artist, Chef, Global Issues, Emergency Aid 3, Navigator 2, Pioneer, Disability Awareness, Entertainer, Hikes, Home Help, Collector, Astronomer and Naturalist activity badges. Since the last AGM, 3 Cubs have earned their Chief Scout’s Silver Award.

## **Leavers/Leadership Changes**

Sean East left at the beginning of September and Andy Lowe and Jill Falkingham joined the team as Assistant Leaders. Our Young Leader Finlay Shortt left at Christmas and in September Abigail Fieldsend joined as a Young Leader. Christopher Mears also became a Young Leader in March 2022.

**And finally…** thank you parents for supporting us as Parent Helpers. Thank you Thor Leaders for being a great team. And thank you Cubs for joining in and having fun!
