Group Scout Leader Report
What can we say about last Year!
Firstly I would like to say a big THANK YOU to all Leaders and Young Leaders of the 86th who have tried and succeeded in keeping scouting going through this pandemic. Using different ways to communicate with young members we have been able to keep a scouting programme during this difficult time.
Unfortunately due to my accident in 2019 I have not been as active as I would of like to have been, I would like to say a big thank you to Matthew and Elliott during this tricky period.
Also it’s nice to see that the group is continuing to grow. Lastly I would like to say a very big THANK YOU to the executive committee for all their continued hard work for running the 86th Scout Group.
Yours in scouting

The Beaver Colony has had a very year doing some different activities as well as some classics activities. We Currently have 10Beavers. I would like to thank my Leaders Badger (Marissa), Lizard (Ashley), Fox (Michelle), Squirrel (Sam) and the Young Leaders, Robin (Keeleigh) and (Drew) for keeping me organised and putting in a lot of new ideas. I am sure the Beavers and parents will join me in thanking them. If anyone wants to help please talk to me at the end.
As we know this year has been a very different then we are used to. So I do appreciate all the help and support from Parents, Beavers and Leaders.
During this year we have only managed to do a few different things keeping socially distanced and COVID Secure.
But we have still managed to get the scouting going with being creative with different craft skills and getting messy with Coke and mentos.
During the year we have had a few Beavers go up to cubs and we hope that they still enjoying Cubs and all the new activities they are doing.
Don’t forget if you know anyone that wants to join please bring him or her along to join in the fun.
Yours in Scouting
Elliott (Otter)

We kicked off the year with LOCK DOWN NO1!.
After waiting a few weeks and realising COVID19 wasn’t going away anytime soon we started running our normal meetings online.
Enter the Virtual World of ZOOM.
As every Scout group in the country was in the same boat, the National community rallied to share ideas for Virtual Meetings.
We started each meeting with a Flag Break (Video of Malcolm), but we pretended it was a live feed with Malcolm running to the HQ at the right time to raise the flag.
We found some escape rooms online, Harry Potter and Escape from Echobase.
Scouts Leader’s Treasure Hunt, based on Aneka Rice’s Treasure Hunt from the 80’s. Our leaders, Kyle and Ashley, were guided around the Wyken area by the Cubs, solving questions as they went.
Excellent websites we found and used extensively was “Duck Race”, Kahoot and Geoguesser.
Games we were able to virtualise were Dobble, Battleships, Connect4, Bingo, Generation Game, Price is Right, Spot the Difference amongst many others.
Virtual visits we lined up were from Blue Cross Animal Charity, London First Station Tour, Commonwealth War Graves and a Forensics Crime Laboratory
Kyle hosted a very strange session where the Cubs had to guess the Animal Poo.
And of course there was ‘Cake in a mug’.
It was a different year but enjoyable and highly amusing at times.

Well, what a strange and difficult year this was. We started April 2020 in lockdown and did not hold any face-to-face meetings until October. We then only met for 7 short weeks until we were thrust into a second lockdown.
However, none of that stopped us, and in true scouting style we found a way to meet and have fun. Thank you ‘Zoom’. Every week many of us met up for games, weekly ‘Kahoot’ quizzes and we even managed to complete some badges! These included the photography and international badge. The Scouts shared some great pictures from their daily walks, as well as learning about different cameras. We also managed to speak to Scouts from America which was so interesting to see how Scouting is there, as well as other fun international activities such as learning some phrases in Spanish and Italian and having a go at making an origami Scout shirt!
As well as weekly meetings, we also managed to hold a non-traditional camp via Zoom! Scouts and leaders built dens in their bedrooms or living rooms and we set plenty of challenges for them to complete during the weekend, as well as having them cook breakfast and dinner on the Saturday.
We were so impressed with how the Scouts adapted to our online meetings and made the most out of such a challenging period of time, they should be proud of themselves.
We hope this next year will be action-packed and full of traditional Scouting activities that we have so missed.

Treasurer’s Report
COVID-19 had a major effect on the Group in 2020-2021. We didn’t have so many activities as we would usually, and some of these took place over Zoom and not face-to-face.
This is showing in the accounts as a big reduction in the income and expenditure of the sections.
HQ expenses were up because of buying items to make us COVID-secure. We bought plenty of masks, hand sanitiser and surface wipes, and a gazebo so we could take subs outside under cover.
Hall rents were down because playgroup had to close during lockdown.
Gas and electricity consumption were down by 1/4.
Our business rates were discounted to £0.
However, the most dramatic effect of COVID-19 is shown in the group accounts where we received over £22,000 in grants through Coventry City Council.
Despite the reduction in scouting activities, this year has left us in a very good financial position. As a result, we can begin to look at some of the issues of HQ maintenance.
If you are interested in becoming our Treasurer, please speak to me or Carol Slingsby, Group Scout Leader.
