Ariel Scout Group Treasurer’s Report 2022 - 2023

Income

Section Income (mostly Subs but including money taken in for camps and other events) was closely balanced (<5%) against the combination of Section Expenditure and Census (the annual fee, per member, that is collected as part of Subs)

A return to full use of the building from our two regular external users (ECWA Church and Fit4Life) gave us a healthy income from hall hire. We also recovered a significant amount via GiftAid, based on donations and Subs income. Thank all the people who have signed GiftAid declarations.

The Group set up a new Squirrells Section and received £2056 in grants to support this.

Expenditure

Council rates continued to be charged at a discounted rate.

Maintenance costs were unusually high as they include £2840 on replacing our (very old) gas boiler.

One issue, familiar to many, was the increase in energy costs. The Group had been on a three-year fixed rate but this deal expired on 22[nd] October 2022. Alternatives suppliers were investigated in the run up to this change but the market for business energy, as with domestic, did not offer significant differences in prices. We expected our electricity price to increase from 16.5p per kWh + 25p per day to 60p per kWh + 60p per day. Fortunately, the government business Energy Bill Relief Scheme was introduced, and we were changed a more manageable 22.6p per kWh + 60p per day.

We continued the use of a professional cleaning cost, introduced during the previous year. In addition, new shelving and tables, for use in the building, were purchased

Summary

This year saw total Income and Expenditure balanced, with just £35 difference. However, it should be noted that £1,278 annual insurance cost was included in the previous year’s accounts.

Our aim is to break even each year with allowance for years where we are under and overspent.

With all the above taken into consideration, the Group remains in a strong financial position with sufficient reserves for near term expenditure.
