In 2021-22 the following key points are highlighted from another successful year:

- Fantastic resilience from volunteers, cadets and families of cadets helped prevent our 3[rd] flooding incident in recent years – in February 2022 – being considerably worse. On the day before the flooding around 80 sandbags were filled and placed outside to form a barrier, even when people were working as the water went over boots. This teamwork was not only a great example of what the cadets can do but also prevented the effects of the flooding being much worse. And then the amount of work a couple of staff did to clean up was incredible, meaning the Unit was open and functioning within 24 hours. No mean feat. Many cadets and families may not realise all that goes on in the background in running a unit – this was one great example.

- We still had challenges remaining from the flooding in February 2020 – most these have now overcome with the additional work of the internal ceiling on the main deck being completely reboarded and painted. Just ahead of the AGM the rest of the main deck has been painted. It took 50 volunteer hours – just highlighting what goes into running a Unit and which is often unseen.

- One of the things that the UMC (Unit Management Committee) does is raise funding – this year the focus has been on raising the funding to ensure the unit is watertight – both from the river and from rain affecting the old roof and walls. It is evident that flooding will affect us again as the impacts of climate change are felt. This has had a big impact on our flooding insurance – with that formerly available to all Units no longer being available to 30 units around the UK – Wakefield included. We therefore moved to FlashFlood, a new device, and this worked for the February 2022 flooding. But then to reinstate was far too expensive to continue with. Our only option was therefore to flood proof the building itself – again very costly. But Wakefield Council, and our local councillors, stepped in. At this AGM it is confirmed that specialist flood proofing is about to take place to the Unit, some of it ahead of Christmas. And following that we are advise our flood insurance premium should reduce, reflecting this substantial work (around £23K is the cost).

- Last year we worked out just how many volunteer hours go into running a unit – and this figure is worth repeating. Well over 7000 donated hours from Staff running cadet evenings twice a week, and UMT work running the Unit overall go into running the Unit. Put into context that is around 187 weeks of work.

- A recent key decision the UMT and CO/Deputy made was to look at the weekly subs paid by cadets/families; ahead of tonight a survey was carried out with a high response rate. This research showed high support for increasing the subs and tonight the UMT is proposing this goes ahead with a figure of £2 per week, and an online payment system being put in place.

Everything mentioned above has meant much of the focus of the UMC over the year has been on business continuity – keeping the Unit waterproof and functioning. Otherwise cadets would not be able to have the amazing activities they benefit from and enjoy. It has taken effort by everyone and it is important to recognise the

background work that your UMC plays, in addition to the fantastic work the uniformed side of volunteers does.

The pressures felt by all ages from the pandemic have affected numbers of cadets but in 2022 these are starting to grow and into 2023 it will be a key aim to grow these numbers further.

There are many people who give so many hours of their time in these figures – Suzanne as secretary, a key role in keeping things going with admin. And Teresa as Acting Vice Chair, taking over when I was away for 2 months earlier this year. Then there is Sam – who indicated last year she wanted to step down as Treasurer but has kept this work going as we were unable to find a replacement. Within the last month Peter Taylor, who lives locally and is a qualified accountant who recently retired, has stepped up to this. Peter is sorry he can’t be here tonight but Sam has already started the handover with him. Thanks so much to Suzanne, Sam and Teresa for their incredible hard work last year.

The Wakefield Unit remains fiscally viable and in as healthy a financial position as possible given the continued issues of flooding and effects of Covid.

Continuing to find volunteers to join the UMC and Staff is no easy task – it is great that tonight we have two new trustees – Peter Box joins Peter Taylor in joining the UMC. That will make 8 of us. But if any family or friends would like to help we could do with more. Everyone has a specific role and keeping the Unit afloat with the background governance is key. Do let us know if you could help. Thanks also to Mark Ridgeway, our President, who joins the UMC meetings whenever he can and is a key part of the team.

As always the UMC is but a small part of the overall team. A huge thank you must go to all the Staff at Wakefield Sea Cadets who every Tuesday and Friday and many other times in between deliver the Sea Cadet Experience. In particular Jean, our Commanding Officer, and Lynn our Executive Officer need thanks. They go well ‘above and beyond’ every week. And thanks also go to our Cadets, Parents & Supporters for their part in our continued success. The Wakefield Unit is a great team, and everyone is part of this.

Outside of our direct Wakefield team thanks also go to our Area and District Staff, our President. & all our donors, sponsors & supporters for their continued support through the year. In particular a huge thank you to our local councillors Hilary Mitchell, Michael Graham and Kevin Swift and to WMDC for the substantial funding to flood proof our Unit.

In its 80[th] year we all remain committed to providing a safe and economically viable training base for the many young people within the cadets whilst supporting the wider community of Wakefield and the South East of the district.
