House together with the land on which the sports grounds are set out. No formal
valuation of the property has been conducted as it is not held for investment purposes
but simply to allow the charity to fulfil Its objects of providing a recreation ground
for the Inhabitants of Armthorpe in South Yorkshire.

ARMTHORPE MINERS, WELFARE RECREATION GROUND
REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2024
The trustees present their report along with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended
31 December 2024. The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the Charities
SORP.
Constitution and Ob"ects
The charity is constituted by a Scheme dated 14 March 2003 and was registered with the Charity
Commission on 21 June 1963 under the number 523472.
Its objective is to provide a recreation ground for the benefit of the inhabitants of the village of
Armthorpe near Doncaster, particularly (but not exclusively) those who are members of the mining
community.
The charity is administered by trustees and those who have served the charity during the year are
shown on page 1.
Review of Activities for the Public Benefit
The Armthorpe Miners, Welfare Recreation Ground charity continues to provide sport and recreational
facilities to the inhabitants of Armthorpe and surrounding areas through its four sub-sections;
Armthorpe Welfare Football Club, Armthorpe Welfare Bowling Club, the Markham Main Colliery Band
and the Armthorpe Sports Pavilion.
The football club operate at step six of the FA national pyramid system providing competitive and
entertaining football on a weekly basis. However, there have been big changes off the field thanks to
the merger with the junior section meaning there is now just one huge community and family club
offering footballing opportunities for young children and a clear development pathway into adult
football all under the same Armthorpe umbrella. Whilst girls can already take part, there are
aspirations to develop a full female pathway to women's football plus disability opportunities alongside
the already established walking football team. In addition, the football club in conjunction with the
central Miners Welfare Scheme have ambitious plans to develop the site the football club currently
use with well overdue floodlight upgrades, a 4G pitch and brand new clubhouse all of which will create
a much more welcoming environment to encourage more participation as well as new revenue
streams to keep the charity and its aims alive for years to come.
The bowling club maintain two high quality bowling greens in the heart of Armthorpe and offer a great
opportunity for local residents to enjoy social bowling or start a new regular hobby. They also offer
competitive bowling with weekly fixtures as well as community events and open days, not forgetting to
mention popular annual tournaments such as the Ken Booth Classic and the Barrie & Michael O'Brien
Memorial.
The Armthorpe Sports Pavilion, once a cricket ground, is now a second hub for football activity in the
village. It provides multiple high quality and well maintained football pitches for other local teams to
utilise that also offers changing facilities and refreshments which is something severely lacking at
most other pitches across the Doncaster area. This facility can also host our football clubs
Development and under 21 matches as well as training sessions for the first team when the ground is
unavailable.
Markham Main Colliery Band is a traditional Brass Band who have resided within the grounds of the
Armthorpe Community Centre and gardens for over 100 years providing a tangible link with the proud
mining heritage of Armthorpe. The band was formed by the Colliery in 1924 to provide a social
musical hub for the working miners over the life of the pit. It has played at the top Brass Band
Contests in the Country and at it's peak it was regarded as one of the elite bands of the day
competing with the likes of Black Dyke and Brighouse and Rastrick bands. Although no longer a
contesting brass band, following the closure of the pit in 1996, we continue to support the local
community playing for commemorative events, putting on our own concerts for the people of

Amthorpe and representing Armthorpe and its mining history across South Yorkshire and beyond,
Aside from playing at public concerts the band has recently produced a CD and appeared on Radio
Leeds. Its members have qualified music specialists within its ranks and can provide music tuition for
those looking to play a musical instrument free to the general public, including children, and those
who want to return to playing or start a new hobby no matter what age. Going forward the band are
keen to be part of any development plans within the scope of the Welfare Committees remit and to
help continue to spread the great reputation of this ex-mining village,
Investment Polic
The charity does not have an investment policy as such. The charity's liquid assets are held in a
non- Interest bearing bank account meaning that the money is instantly accessible to meet the
charity's expenses.
Risk Mana
ement
The trustees are aware of the operational and financial risks which the charity faces and regularly
reviews those risks to mitigate against any Impact they may have on the charity.
Statement of Trustees Res
onsibilities
Law applicable to charities in England and Wales requires the trustees to prepare financial statements
for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the charity and of its incoming resources and
application of resources of the charity for that period. In preparing those financial statements, the
trustees are required to:
select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently;
observe the methods and principles of the Charities SORP,
make Judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;
state whether applicable accounting standards have been followed subject to any material
departures disclosed and explained the financial statements;
prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to
presume that the charity will continue in business.
The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which disclose with reasonable
accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and enable them to ensure that the financial
statements comply with the Charities Act 2011. They are also responsible for safeguarding the
assets of the charity and for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and
other irregularities.
