Colebridge Young People’s Club Incorporating Colebridge Table Tennis Club President: Chair: Mr. John Swinburne

ANNUAL REPORT: 2023-24

The 2023-24 season has been quite a challenging one. The inclement weather experienced in the late summer caused delay to the ‘New Roof’ project and created some delay to the start of the playing season. However, I am sure you will agree that it was all worthwhile and we continue to have a facility that is the envy of many clubs throughout the region. It would be remiss of me not to thank the committee for all their commitment and hard work throughout the year to ensure that Colebridge TTC runs smoothly so that we can all enjoy our table tennis.

We recognise the approach driveway needs repairing. Over recent years the potholes have been subject to temporary repair. However, now the roof project has been completed, we have turned our attention to a more permanent repair and work should be carried out before the onset of winter.

Our club continues to grow and has a healthy membership. Thanks to our coaching programmes and dedicated coaches our playing abilities, at all ages and skill levels, have improved and as a result our achievements both locally and nationally are very commendable.

Colebridge had another successful season in local leagues, highlighted by Colebridge A (Ben Willson, Hawley Ellicott, Sam Henderson, Nathaniel Saunders) defending their Birmingham Premier League title. Colebridge B and C maintained their positions in the top division. Colebridge D just missed out on promotion, finishing in an impressive 3[rd] place in division 1. Colebridge H (Matthew Benson, Stephen Davies, Steve Ratheram, Craig Wharton & Adam Hawkins) earned promotion finishing in 2[nd] in division 3. In the Leamington local league, Colebridge A finished mid table in division 1, as did Colebridge B in division 2.

Colebridge had representatives across most County teams this season, with the most success in the Cadet and Junior Teams once again. Nathaniel Saunders represented England Schools in the Senior Schools Internationals in the Isle of Man, winning a silver and a bronze medal.

On a sad note, Maurice Hadley , an ex-Colebridge member sadly passed away in the middle of July. Maurice had been a member of Colebridge for a long time, attending the club regularly until 2021.

Finally, I am delighted to advise that Dr Neil Shastri-Hurst MP has agreed to be our new President. Recently we had the opportunity to meet Neil at Colebridge at which time he was pleased to learn about our activities in the community and offered to provide help and assistance whenever needed. We look forward to working with Neil in the future.

JUNIOR PERFORMANCES

We are privileged to have so many young people representing our Club, both locally and nationally, however, Ian has picked those who he feels deserves a special mention across all levels of experience.

Nathaniel Saunders: England ranked no. 31 in Junior Boys. Nathaniel has had a very strong year whilst juggling exams. He represented England at the Senior Schools International in the Isle of Man winning a Team Silver and Individual Bronze medal. At the National School Individual Finals, he also earned Bronze in the U19 Boys. Finally, he truly anchored the Warwickshire County Junior 1[st] team to a very hard fought second place in the Premier Division with a series of calm and focused wins, in addition to being a member of the County Senior 1[st] team.

Sakinah Damji: England ranked no. 3 in U10 Girls and no. 7 in U11 Girls. Sakinah started the year unranked but qualified for the National School Individual Finals and then the Mark Bates Ltd National U10 and U11 Championships where she won a bronze medal in the U10 girls singles. She regularly plays competitions and her ranking has improved gaining qualification for this season’s National Series in U13 girls. Sakinah is a new player to the club and full of energy and determination.

Charlotte LokChing Wong: Number 7 on the U13 Girls rating list. Charlotte qualified for the National School Individual Finals for U13 Girls and helped the Warwickshire Cadet 1[st] Team to third place in the Premier Division. However, her greatest achievement this year has been to qualify for the National School Team Finals for U13 Girls with two very inexperienced team mates from Tudor Grange Academy. This meant consistently winning her singles matches through all the prior rounds and finding a way to win the doubles decider; great resilience under pressure.

Hassan Damji : England ranked no. 31 in U15 Boys. Hassan represented Warwickshire in both Cadet teams this year. He helped the 1[st] team to third place in the Premier Division and the 2[nd] team to first place in Division 1C. Hassan has also qualified for this season’s National Series in U15 Boys. He is very committed to improving further and is looking forward to representing Colebridge in the local league this year.

Jaymas Ng, Rex Ho, Sheung Yin Sean Lee, Jack Mobberley and Haymas Ng: all five of these Colebridge players represented Tudor Grange Academy in the National School Team Finals for U19 Boys. This was a fantastic effort to get through all the qualifying rounds and face schools from all over the country. The boys really focused on this competition and worked brilliantly as a team to make the final four.

Samuel Lee, Hailey Lam, Rody Ho and Dean Tuan-Mu: everyone has improved this year resulting in winning Division 2 of the National Cadet League competition with Samuel also winning the individual averages for a double gold medal.

Mia Man Nga Chan : won the Under 15 Independent Schools Association National Championships, which took place at the David Ross Sports Village at the University of Nottingham in January. Mia successfully won all ten of her matches in the event.

Dora Wong (U11 Girls), Nokulus Lam (U11 Boys), Rex Ho (U13 Boys), Mia Man Nga Chan (U16 Girls), Hanne Pui Yu Chui (U19 Girls) and Jaymas Ng (U19 Boys): these players did brilliantly to qualify and play at the Butterfly National School Individual Finals in April after winning the Warwickshire Individual titles. It was Dora’s first experience of competitions this season.

Starry Sheung: Starry represented Warwickshire County in both the Junior and Senior 1[st] teams this season, contributing significantly to the Junior team finishing in second place in the Premier Division. Starry represented his School Team in the Under 16 boys where they reached the semi-final stage.

SENIOR PERFORMANCES

Ben Willson alongside Hawley Ellicott, Sam Henderson and Nathaniel Saunders defended their Birmingham Premier League title. Hawley finished second in the averages, with Ben finishing 3[rd] . Ben followed this success up by winning the men’s and veteran singles titles at the Birmingham Closed Championships in June. He also represented the Warwickshire County Senior and Veteran Teams this season.

Ian Ferguson and Hawley Ellicott retained their National Police doubles title with an emphatic win over the Metropolitan Police pairing of Winston Wong and Tai Luu at the Police National Championships in April. Ferguson also continued his dominance of the veteran men’s singles, winning for the 4th consecutive year and securing his 23rd National title in total, overcoming his Veterans British League team mate Tim O’Mahoney 3-0 in a repeat of the 2023 final. Ferguson and Ellicott were both selected to represent the British Police Table Tennis Team at the European Police Table Tennis Championships in Prague in June, with Fergie Captaining the mens side for the second successive European event.

Craig Allen won a gold medal in the Men’s Singles Classes 8-9 at the Sheffield Para Open in April. He has also reached the quarter finals of the Finland Open in September 2023 with a partner from Spain. Craig has also had some success at local level in the Lillington tournaments.

MEMBERSHIP

Our 2023-24 membership was made up of the following members:

Category MALE FEMALE Total
Junior 55 18 73
Young Adult 6 3 9
Senior 92 12 104
153 33 186

Our youngest member was 6, our oldest member was 86 and the average age of a member was 38.

FINANCIAL REPORT

This year’s income reduced by £13,466 and expenses have increased by £18,838, as we were still paying for the Club’s roof, lighting and heating project. The overall income for the last 12 months was £47,489, which is a reduction of 40% compared to last financial period. This is mainly due to the Crowdfunding result of £20,537.20 in the previous financial year. On the expenditure side we have spent £71,240. A substantial proportion was for the remaining costs of the roof project (£44,057). Therefore, our cash balance has reduced significantly from £58,788 in July 2023 to £35,106 at the end of July 2024.

DEVELOPMENT

Colebridge has continued to develop in various avenues over the season, improving the reputation across the county and country! There are nine junior coaching sessions taking place on a weekly basis, including TT Kidz, and a Girls Only session on a Monday.

In December 2023, Colebridge successfully applied for a grant from the Inclusive Communities Fund, which was legacy funding from the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games. The funding has helped support the TT Kidz and Girls only weekly coaching; as well as some County and Area based Girls only training.

Additionally, Colebridge were successful in achieving financial support from the Solihull Active Minds Grant.

Colebridge have received £750 funding from the Baron Davenport Charity to provide some financial support towards the representative teams at the club. As a club, we are very grateful for the ongoing support of the Baron Davenport Charity.

Congratulations to Michael Browne, who in March 2024, successfully passed his Level 2 Lead Coaching qualification. Michael helps with some of the coaching sessions at Colebridge, as well as delivering the coaching programme at the University of Birmingham.

Although, not on a regular basis, the coaching team have organised some adult only coaching sessions during 2024, and are working hard to provide further adult coaching opportunities in the future.

SITE & DRIVE

The start of the season saw the roof replacement project completed along with new lighting, heaters and the inside of the club decorated. Additionally, the maintenance team have kept the club inside and out looking respectable. Special thanks to John Overton, Steve Ratheram, Robert Chapman, Micky Welsh, and Roy Prosser.

On Sunday 14[th] July, a tidy-up morning was held to improve and tidy the outside grounds. Thank you to Michael and Nicola Rinnhofer, Roy and Evelyn Prosser, John Overton, Ian Scott, Gary and Alex Setchell, Stephen Davies, Zahid Fayyaz, Alex Sosnovenko, Wah Chung (Kenny) Kee and Kate Hughes for helping on this day.

As mentioned, the maintenance focus is now on improving the condition of the driveway approaching the club.

Thank you to everyone for their support over the last year, and I would like to wish the members a successful and enjoyable 2024-25 season.
