## **- ANNUAL REPORT: 2022 23**

Colebridge has a **new roof** , following a huge **Crowdfunding Campaign** to raise almost **£21k** toward the project, including £8k in match funding from Sport England: Places & Spaces. The club are very grateful for the support of everyone who donated or offered a reward.

On the table, Colebridge has continued to dominate at local league level. Colebridge teams won the Birmingham Premier Division, and finished 2nd in both Birmingham and Leamington Division 1. **Hawley Ellicott** and **Ben Willson** jointly won the Premier Division averages. **Tony Yip** proved to be a vital signing for Colebridge E, finishing top of the Division 1 averages with 30/33 wins. **Kenny Wah Chung Kee** battled to 2nd place in the Birmingham Division 4 averages with a fantastic 41/48 record.

Three players have represented England Schools Teams. **Charlotte Wong** played in the Primary Schools Internationals, **Aarif Li** and **Starry Sheung** participated in the Senior Schools Internationals in Galway, Ireland. All three players were medal winners.

The junior membership numbers continue to be very healthy, there were 82 junior members at the close of the membership year. There are presently nine junior coaching sessions per week including, TT Kidz, and a girls’ only session. The club has enjoyed junior success in National Cadet League and National Junior League competitions.

A special thank you to **Alex Setchell** who has regularly provided support at junior coaching sessions. His continued help is very much appreciated.

Colebridge had representatives in the Warwickshire Cadet 1[st] , Cadet 2[nd] and Junior 1[st] County teams this season, with the Cadet 1[st] team finishing in second place in the Premier Division, and the Cadet 2[nd] team winning Division 1B. Several members represented the senior and veteran teams for both Warwickshire and Worcestershire in the County Championships.

On a sad note, **Peter Roddy** , a member for over 30 years passed away at the end of June. Peter was a dedicated member, representing the club in local league and at county level. He always offered support to the Club, having been a committee member for many years, attending social events, and was happy to help with all things DIY. Peter will be greatly missed by Colebridge and the larger table tennis community.

**Alan Hewitt** , an ex-Colebridge member sadly passed away at the start of June following a battle with cancer. Alan represented Colebridge in both the Leamington and Birmingham local leagues, as well as both Warwickshire and Leicestershire County Teams at multiple age categories.

## **JUNIOR PERFORMANCES**

We are privileged to have so many young people representing our Club, both locally and nationally, however, Ian has picked those who he feels deserves a special mention across all levels of experience.

**Starry Sheung:** England rated no. 11 U15 Boys. Starry has represented Warwickshire County at three age groups this year; Cadet, Junior, and Senior, while he is still just 15 years old. He has improved his playing confidence throughout the season to finish with a team Gold and individual Bronze for England at the Senior Schools International (Ireland) in U16 Boys. Starry seems to be able to find an extra gear when the pressure is on; 5-or 6-point comebacks are no problem, but it is a rollercoaster to watch!

**Aarif Li:** England rated no. 4 U13 Boys. Aarif won the Butterfly Schools National Individual Championships in April in the U13 Boys category. It took a 12-10 win in the 5[th] game of a fantastic final to take the title. He also won a team Silver and individual Silver for England at the Senior Schools International (Ireland) in U14 Boys. His focus is rock solid in matches and he also helped Colebridge A win Division 1 Golds in both National Cadet League and National Junior League this season. Additionally, Aarif was unbeaten in 16 matches playing for Warwickshire Cadets 1[st] and 2[nd] teams.

**Charlotte LokChing Wong:** England rated no. 4 in U13 Girls. Charlotte won team Gold for England in the Primary Schools International (Oundle). She had a strong InterRegional Finals where she gained a team Silver (with **Hazel Lam** ) and individual bronze in U11 Girls for the West Midlands. Charlotte had 8 out of 9 wins while representing Warwickshire in the Cadets 2[nd] team; and reaching the quarter finals of the National Schools U11 Girls Finals rounded off a season of great improvement. Charlotte never believes she is beaten and really enjoyed playing for England Schools again.

**Rex Ho:** England rated no. 11 in U13 Boys and **Angus Li:** England ranked no. 29 in U15 Boys. Rex and Angus were National Cadet and Junior League Division 1 winners this year for Colebridge A, and won Division 1B with the Warwickshire Cadet 2[nd] team. Both have shown some real consistency and development: they were unbeaten in the Warwickshire County matches and managed 18 wins out of 18 matches in the National Cadet League. Well done both.

**Hanne Pui Yu Chui:** England rated no. 51 Junior Girls. Hanne won the Warwickshire Schools U19 Girls title and played extremely well for the Warwickshire Junior team and Senior 2[nd] team with 16 wins out of 20 matches. Hanne has great fighting spirit and composure during her matches which are backed up by a powerful forehand.

## **Hazel Lam (U11 Girls), Hailey Lam (U13 Girls), Nokulus Lam (U11 Boys) and Dean Tuan-**

**Mu (U11 Boys):** all did brilliantly to qualify to represent the West Midlands at the InterRegional Finals in May. Along with the rest of the team they helped the West Midlands Team achieve 3[rd] place overall out of 10 regions. They are all developing competitive experience but Dean Tuan-Mu qualified and played with only one practice session per week and without the benefit of having played National Cadet League this season. It was tough but they all competed well.

## **SENIOR PERFORMANCES**

**Hawley Ellicott** has had a successful season, having finished joint top of the Birmingham Premier League averages winning 47/48 matches. Hawley represented the Worcestershire County Senior Team, securing a 3[rd] place finish for the team, as well as being Doubles runners up in the Worcestershire County Closed with Sam Henderson. In his first Police Sport UK National Championships, Hawley reached the semi-finals in the Men’s singles, and won the Men’s doubles with partner Ian Ferguson.

**Ben Willson** has once again captained Colebridge A to another Birmingham Premier League title, with an individual record of 47/48, he shared in the averages with Hawley. Ben represented the Warwickshire County Senior and Veteran 1st Teams, helping the Veteran team finish in 2nd place in Division 1A. Ben has continued to play in some Veteran Master Competitions and the Veteran Nationals.

**Sam Henderson** finished the season with an impression 44/48 in the Birmingham Premier League averages and formed the third leg of Colebridge’s runway Premier League win. A clear 50 points from the second placed team. Sam reached the Worcestershire County Closed Men’s doubles final.

**Ian Ferguson** once again represented West Midlands Police in the National Championships and retained his Veteran Singles title for the fourth consecutive year. Additionally, he won the Men’s Doubles title with Hawley, and finished runner-up in the Men’s Singles.

**Craig Allen** has continued his success on the British Para Table Tennis Circuit, winning a silver medal in the Class 9 singles and a bronze medal in the Restricted singles at the Widnes Para Open, and a bronze medal in Class 9/10 in the Sheffield Para Open. In the BPTT National Championships, Craig achieved a silver medal in the Class 9 Singles. Craig aims to have further success in the new season, including participating in some international tournaments.

After many years of extraordinary effort, dedication, and commitment, **Mahroof Hussain** has captained his Colebridge E team to promotion from Birmingham Division 1 up to the Premier Division. A great achievement.

**Lisa Rinnhofer** represented the Warwickshire County Senior 1[st] Team Seniors, helping the team maintain their position in Division 1A for next season, as well as Colebridge in Women’s British League. Lisa successfully qualified for the Senior National Championships at the University of Nottingham at the end of March.

**Mike Browne** represented Warwickshire County Veterans and Over 60s whilst also turning out for Colebridge A's winning Birmingham Premier side and the Leamington Division 1 team.

## **FINANCIAL REPORT**

This year both income and expenditure have increased significantly, due to the roof replacement, and the upgrading of the lighting and heating. The overall gain for the last financial accounting period to 31st July (12 months) was £8553.97, which is an increase of 16.45% compared to last financial period (18 months). This is mainly due to the fantastic Crowdfunding result of £20,537.20, personal donations of £3,590.78, and several grants totalling £3,001. This means our cash balance increased from £50,233.97 to £58,787.94.

On the expenditure side we still have approximately £39,000 left to pay on the roof replacement, lighting, heating, and decorating project. After the project is completed, our cash balance will decrease to circa £20,000 by the end of October.

## **DEVELOPMENT**

Colebridge has continued to develop in various avenues over the season, improving the reputation across the county and country!

Steven Ratheram completed his Level 1 Umpire Qualification in April, and we look forward to him using his skills at some events next season. Inky Moss and Alan Buttle have once again umpired at many events, including the County Championships, British League, and the National Championships.

The TT Kidz Award sessions continue to thrive, with new under 11 players being introduced to the sport in a fun and enjoyable learning environment. The girls’ only coaching session has continued on a weekly basis, helping to increase the number of female numbers to our highest in the history of the club. Both these sessions have been financially supported by the Heart of England Community Foundation – Solihull Voluntary Sector Resilience Fund following a grant of £2001.

The coaching team are hoping to arrange more adult only coaching sessions next season too.

Colebridge have received £1000 funding from the Baron Davenport Charity to support the running or two Women’s British Leagues Teams, as well as the National Cadet and National Junior League Teams for the new season.

## **SITE & DRIVE**

The maintenance team continue to try and keep things working and the club looking respectable.

The following tasks have been completed over the last 12 months; the large tree at the rear of the club taken down; the tree at the front of the club partly cut down; the small tree at the side of the club taken down; weeds trimmed, weed killer applied; manhole cover re-cemented, sewerage drainage cleared at manhole by Chinese takeaway due to flooding in men’s toilet; multiple floor boards replaced and repainted; electric sockets replaced; timer switches fitted for two heaters; gents toilet door repaired; kitchen light fitting replaced; table tennis tables repaired; touching up of wall paint; and the back store room tidied.

Other tasks due to be completed post the roof replacement include varnishing the playing floors; damp proofing; and door edging strips in room two.

Special thanks to the following people for their help with the maintenance of the club; Roy Prosser, Steve Ratheram, John Overton, Robert Chapman, Micky Welsh, Michael Rinnhofer, Nicola Rinnhofer and Andy Taylor.

I would like to thank everyone for their support, particularly over the roof replacement, which was well needed. I would like to wish the members a successful and enjoyable 2023-24 season.
