ANNUAL REPORT: 2021-22

Colebridge has seen the welcome return of pretty much normal table tennis this year. Local league matches have returned, along with County and National events across the country in all age groups.

Colebridge have seen for the first time, four representatives in England Schools Teams. Rex Ho, Aarif Li and Charlotte LokChing Wong were selected to play in the Under 11 British Primary Schools Championships in Guernsey; whilst Nathaniel Saunders (a member of the England Aspire Squad) was selected for the Under 16 Boys England team for the Senior Schools International Championships in Largs, Scotland. All four players successfully brought home medals.

The junior membership has increased significantly at the club, with more junior coaching sessions taking place on a weekly basis to cope with the demand from new members. The standard of performances at junior level has also increased, with more players once again representing Warwickshire at County level. Both the Warwickshire Cadet and Junior County teams have gained promotion to the Premier Division for next season, which will be an exciting and challenging opportunity for any Colebridge player selected.

The hard work and commitment of Ian Scott and the coaching team have helped provide many opportunities for all the cadet and junior players; as well as the introduction of more adult coaching into the club programme. A special thank you to Alex Setchell and Sophie Rinnhofer for their support in assisting at junior coaching sessions on a regular basis throughout the year.

More success took place in the Birmingham & Solihull League , with Colebridge C winning Division 1 and Mark Georgevic winning the individual averages, whilst Colebridge F won Division 2 with Dean Hicks topping the averages.

This season has seen more senior and veteran members represent both Warwickshire and Worcestershire in the County Championships.

The season finished with Birmingham hosting the Commonwealth Games this summer, with the Table Tennis taking place at the NEC. The following Colebridge members volunteered and helped with the event: Inky Moss, Alan Hall, Nicola Rinnhofer and Kate Hughes .

JUNIOR PERFORMANCES

We are privileged to have so many young people representing our Club, both locally and nationally, however, Ian has picked those who he feels deserves a special mention across all levels of experience.

Nathaniel Saunders ; current England Junior ranked no. 40, continues to improve. Nathaniel represented England Schools in the Senior Schools Internationals in Scotland this year. Playing for England B against the Home Nations he and his partner won a gold medal beating England A in the final. He also played for Warwickshire County Juniors winning 11 of 12 matches and beating three higher ranked opponents as the team finished second. As Birmingham U16 Schools champion Nathaniel played in the National Schools Finals and reached the quarter final stages in the U16 competition only losing to the eventual winner. Finally, Nathaniel had a good year at the Birmingham Closed where he won the Junior competition and also came second in the Men’s Singles.

Sophie Rinnhofer ; current England Junior ranking no. 37, represented Warwickshire in the Junior County team winning 75% of her matches and helping the team finish second in the division. The team has subsequently been promoted to the Premier division for next year. Sophie also played Junior British League for Wensum and Women’s British league for Colebridge. Her JBL team Wensum gained promotion to the Premier division this season. Despite working for her A Levels this year Sophie also still qualified for the Junior National Championships.

Aarif Li; current England ranked no. 1 U11 Boys and no.10 U13 Boys. Aarif has been very busy this year. He was selected to represent England Schools in the British Primary Schools International Championships in Guernsey with Rex where they won a team silver medal and Aarif also won an individual silver medal for England.

“The most memorable tournament is British Schools International Championship in Guernsey. This is my first time to travel overseas alone and represent a team of England. I believe that this is just a beginning of my dream to be a professional table tennis player. Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity and I am so proud to be part of Team England.”

Aarif qualified for the National Schools Finals U11 Boys after becoming Warwickshire champion where he reached the final and won a silver medal. He also played very well for Warwickshire County Cadets early in the season and helped the team to second place with a 100%-win average in his matches. He won four 2* competitions across U11, U12 and U13 categories with additional runner up places at other events through the year. Finally, he won a silver medal for Colebridge A in National Cadet League Division 1 despite the team being hit with several absences due to covid over the season.

Rex Ho; current England ranked no. 8 U12 Boys and no.17 U13 Boys. Rex was selected to represent England Schools in the British Primary Schools International Championships in Guernsey with Aarif. They had some great matches and finally finished with a silver medal after narrowly losing to Ireland 4-6. He also played very well for Warwickshire County Cadets early in the season and helped the team to second place with 100%-win average in his matches. Another silver medal for Colebridge A in National Cadet League Division 1 and improving results in the Nottingham 2* competitions, means Rex has had a very good first season in England.

Charlotte LokChing Wong; current England ranked no. 10 in U11 Girls and no. 28 in U13 Girls. Charlotte was selected to represent England Schools in the British Primary Schools International Championships in Guernsey and with her team mates she won gold for England! Charlotte also qualified for the National Schools U11 Girls Finals as Warwickshire champion where she reached the quarter-finals and only lost to the two eventual finalists. Charlotte has continued to improve her results in the Cadet tournaments at Nottingham and also represented Colebridge in the National Cadet League earning a place in Division 1 for Colebridge B. She has really improved this year and is training hard. For a 10-year-old she hits a fast ball!

Ashlee Badger; current England ranked no. 40 in U13 Girls. Ashlee was selected to play for Warwickshire County Cadets this season and helped the team to a second-place finish and promotion to the Premier division. She won 50% of her matches in a real step up in level. She also qualified for the National Championships U13 Girls this year and represented Colebridge in the National Cadet League earning a place in Division 1 for Colebridge B.

Sam Lee; current England ranked no. 36 in U11 Boys. Sam qualified for the U11 Boys National Championships for the first time this year after having a great season for Colebridge C in the National Cadet League. He even got to appear on the live stream court at the Nationals and had the chance to face some very highly ranked players. In National Cadet League he won a gold medal with his team in Division 2 despite still being at primary school.

Mark Georgevic has had a great season in the Birmingham, Solihull and District Leagues – division 1, securing the individual averages, winning 34 out of 36 matches played. Vikas Bakhshi also had a great season, winning 34 matches out of 42. The commitment of both Mark and Vikas, along with their team mates helped gain promotion to the Premier Division for next season.

Dean Hicks dominated the averages in Division 2, winning 39 out of 45 matches, securing promotion for Colebridge F to Division 1 for the 2022-23 season. Dean’s awkward style created difficulty for many opposing players throughout the year.

SITE & DRIVE

The maintenance team continue to try and keep things working and the club looking respectable. Thank you to all the members who gave up their time on the Clean-up Day on Sunday 5[th] September 2021, in addition to those who did other jobs outside of this day.

Numerous people have helped in various ways over the last 12 months completing different tasks including cutting down the weeds, applying weedkiller, trimming the overgrowth, clearing the guttering and the valley, repairing table tennis tables, replacing wall heaters, painting, repairing concrete around the manhole, and repairing drain covers. Thank you to all those who have given their time to help look after the club.

The committee are continuing to work hard in relation to the ongoing roof issues. As previously mentioned, this is a time consuming and complicated task, but one which the committee believe is slowly moving forwards.

SOCIAL EVENTS

Unfortunately, due to Covid-19, there were no social events over the last year. It is hoped some of our previous events may be able to return for the forthcoming season.

DEVELOPMENT

Inky Moss and Alan Buttle continue to umpire at many events, at both local and national level across the country, including British League and the County Championships. They give up many hours to support the officiating of many events throughout the season.

Following the return to normality post Covid-19, the Tuesday afternoon ‘Golden Oldies’ session has continued to thrive and is the most popular session within the club programme. Thank you once again to Frank Wilkins who continues to oversee this session.

The Colebridge coaching team have delivered two TT Kidz Programmes, an initiative to attract 7–11-year-olds into table tennis. The programme has been led predominantly by Kate Hughes, with Ian Scott, Ian Ferguson and TT Kidz Activator Sophie Rinnhofer assisting throughout the season. The delivery of the programme has been followed up by the TT Kidz Awards, which has attracted new junior members to Colebridge. The TT Kidz programme next year will be financially supported with a £1000 grant from Baron Davenport.

Colebridge Young People’s Club Incorporating Colebridge Table Tennis Club President: Mr. Julian Knight MP Chairperson: Mr. John Swinburne

A new girls only coaching session has been introduced into the coaching programme, again attracting additional female juniors to the club, and giving some of the current members an additional coaching session each week on a regular basis. The sessions are being financially supported by a ‘Level the Table’ grant from Table Tennis England.

For the first time in several seasons, there has been more adult coaching sessions available for members, and the coaching team are hoping to deliver additional sessions in the future.

The 2021-22 season has certainly seen table tennis return to a greater level of normality, which has been gratefully received by all players. Colebridge has had many outstanding achievements this season, and I would like to say thank you for your continued support, and wish you every success for the forthcoming season.
