3[rd] WEST BRIDGFORD (FRIARY) SCOUT GROUP (Registered Charity No. 522467) ( https://www.3rdwbfriaryscouts.org.uk )
Chairman’s Report for the year ending 31[st] March 2022
No one expected the trials and challenges of 2020/2021 that made some profound changes to our lives, and it is pleasing that this year we have been cautiously returning to normalcy. At the year end, the limitations imposed on Scouting activities were largely removed with some Covid related caveats, and I am delighted to report that the number of young people is back to pre-Covid levels.
To offer a first class Scouting experience we need an exciting, interesting and stimulating programme, a really good Leadership team, and strong support from parents and the Group Executive. 3[rd] West Bridgford is fortunate to have all these in abundance and that becomes clear to all when you see the spirit and enthusiasm of those in our care. We are enormously impressed by our Leaders who continue to come up with creative, inventive and at times ingenious ideas that are skilfully blended into the more traditional scouting programme. Our thanks to all of you who are making our brand of Scouting fun for everyone, including yourselves!
Also, a big thank you to our Group Executive Committee who, although working largely in the background, provide immense support to the Group, both practically and in making, sometimes difficult, decisions to ensure the continuing success of 3[rd] West Bridgford. In addition, we owe our gratitude to those who fix things, make improvements, apply a lick of paint, clean the premises and much more – all behind the scenes stuff that is invaluable and greatly appreciated. Our Treasurer will tell you more, but I am pleased to report that the Group is in a sound financial position.
Whilst thanking all of our volunteers for your efforts and hard work, I would like to offer special congratulations to David Bolt who was awarded the Chief Scouts Commendation for Good Service, and also to Malcolm Siddons who was presented with an Award for Merit.
The work on the hall floor was completed and looks truly splendid. The Climbing Wall (and now the bouldering wall) are huge assets and I am delighted to report they are in full operation. A safety inspection was carried out and we have an energetic team that looks after it and manages bookings.
There was a need to refurbish our toilet facilities, but the quotations were significantly higher than anticipated. We now have consent to use the Friary Church accessible toilet, and more modest improvements are well underway. Thanks to Alan Hubber and Malcolm Siddons for taking this on board.
With regret I have to report that, after a long and rich history spanning nearly 200 years both at Friar Lane and Musters Road, the Friary Church is to close in June 2022. Your Group Executive has been aware of this possibility for some time. Our Hall lease expires on 31[st] December 2029 and we are actively in discussions with “Friary Drop In” and the URC Synod to consider the longer term effect on the Group.
3[rd] West Bridgford (Friary) Scout Group history going right back to when it first started in 1927 has now been merged into our website, courtesy of Colin Howard. How things have changed – take a look!
We appreciate any help that parents are able to offer us whether it be for a couple of hours every week or a few hours once a year for a specific event; if you can support us in this way, please contact one of our Leaders. We do not just need people with specific skills, quite often another pair of hands is ideal. “ Variety is the spice of life” so they say, and if you have any thoughts or ideas for visits, perhaps to your place of work or elsewhere, or if you have any skills or hobbies that might be of interest to young people once again, please get in touch, we would be happy to hear from you.
I am delighted that the Group is going from strength to strength. Having experienced first-hand the boundless enthusiasm, energy and passion of both the adults and young people that are part of our Scouting family, I am confident that we have a bright and successful future ahead of us.
