Marilyn VVhitehead- Chair JanEs VVard- Treasurer SU￿d Marityn ￿ltehead septe￿￿er 2020 **Annual General Meeting** Group Scout Leader (GSL) and Chair of the Executive Committee Joint Report Peter Whitehead Marilyn Whitehead ## Annual General Meeting ## • **GSL and Chair of the Executive Joint Report** Firstly, **THANKS** must go to the Section Leaders and all their helpers who continued to run regular meetings during this very difficult and unusual year and to all the members of the Executive Committee for their help in supporting the group. **THANKS** , also to all our fantastic Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers, Parents and Carers for being so resilient and coping so well with all changes and rules due to COVID restrictions! ## Annual General Meeting - **GSL and Chair of the Executive Joint Report** This year has been unlike any previous year! The pandemic has meant that The Scout Association has had to review Nationwide every aspect of all the Scouting activity. Every activity and every venue has had to conform with Government legal Lockdown requirements, and all have needed to be risk assessed and the written assessment approved by local Scout District and Scout County Officials. The Scout Association has worked with other youth service providers and worked to colour coded schemes (red, yellow, amber, green) indicating what risks have identified and will be overcome to allow given activities to go ahead (the-readiness-levels-across-uk-scouts). Our Scout Group has had to submit risk assessments to Rushcliffe District Scouts and have them approved for all indoor and outdoor activities for our members. We currently have the following RA in place: - 1st Radcliffe on Trent Beavers/ Cubs/ Scouts INDOORS and OUTDOORS at the SCOUT HALL - 1st Radcliffe on Trent Beavers/ Cubs/ Scouts OUTDOOR HIKE/ WALK - 1st Radcliffe on Trent Beavers/ Cubs/ Scouts at HOLLYGATE CAMP SITE - 1st Radcliffe on Trent Beavers/ Cubs/ Scouts RADCLIFFE ON TRENT CRICKET CLUB OUTDOORS - 1st Radcliffe on Trent Beavers/ Cubs/ Scouts MEETINGS AROUND RADCLIFFE ON TRENT: The Grange The Recreation Ground The Memorial Park Bingham Road Playing Fields ## Annual General Meeting ## • **GSL and Chair of the Executive Joint Report** In addition, our building has had to be made COVID19 secure and we have produced a risk assessment that all 3rd party users must accept before they can use the premises. There have been times when out premises could not be used for any Scouting activities and other times when the number of people participating in activity in the premises was very limited. In addition, there were times where we have not been able to hire the Hall for local activity groups and therefore did not have rental income. However, of course we still had outgoing expenses for the building including insurance, utility bills and fire and safety inspections. Whilst the Scout Hall was not being used during Lockdown volunteers took the opportunity to refresh and deep clean the premises and ensure that we could provide a COVID19 secure environment. We all soon realised that there were many tasks we would like to do were too big to be done by the few volunteers. However, we have been very fortunate that Rushcliffe local authority was able to make grants to local community venues and the Rushcliffe Scout District Treasurer identified grants that were available to a Scout groups that owned their HQ. Our Group Scout Leader made successful applications for available grants. In addition, the District has provided us with Anti-viral cleaning materials and hand sanitiser. Annual General Meeting ## **Hall Maintenance** - As the grants became available, we have been able to employ professional workers to get some of these tasks done. Many of you will have seen the work that has been done during the last year. - This includes: Replacing the fire escape steps Painting the outside of the Scout Hall. Decorating the following inside areas of the Scout Hall: Reception, Main Hall, Activities Room Repairing the floor in the Main Hall New flooring in the Reception and Activities Room ## Annual General Meeting ## • **GSL and Chair of the Executive Joint Report** The Scout Group’s main fund-raising activity in previous years has been the Radcliffe Scout Christmas Post. Unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions in December 2020 this had to be cancelled. In addition, the Radcliffe Carnival where the Scout Group usually have a stall and the Community Café where the Scout Group usually one session were also cancelled. We are very grateful to the Select Convenience Store in Radcliffe who ran a raffle in aid of our Scout Group in December 2020 and raised us £191. We very much hope that we will be back with the Scout Christmas Post in December 2021! ## Annual General Meeting ## • **GSL and Chair of the Executive Joint Report** The Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorer section reports which follow really reflect the how the leaders have managed these difficult times. The leaders have delivered creative meetings and activities initially digitally and later face to face whilst including tasks that can be created at home. Prior to the lockdown we had celebrated Chinese New Year and food tasting, an evening of creative box making with Rehannah Mian of Magical Storybook Events, storytelling/hot chocolate evening with Magical Storybook Events to support the Reading Badge. From March onwards we did not plan in any Zoom meetings but set badge challenges for Beavers such as Gardener/Cook and finishing the Reading badge. On 16 September 2020 we returned to outdoor face to face meetings and ran two groups of 10 Beavers of 45 minutes each, we started the Camp Craft Badge where we learnt how to tie reef knots and treat knots with bread sticks and strawberry laces, made camp blankets, marshmallow toasting, remembrance stones, sparklers in the garden for bonfire night before the second lockdown came in. 10 November we did our first Zoom for 30 minutes starting off with a Lego creative evening, made campfire cookies at home, made our own camping dens at home, Nottinghamshire County Council did an interactive Road Safety session for us, snowman decorating for the village snowman trail and Christmas party bingo. Annual General Meeting ## **2021** For January 2021 we decided not to continue with the Zoom meetings as we were only getting about half of the Beavers attending and it was a struggle to keep them all engaged, we set the challenge of the Safety badge to work on at home. Beavers returned to face-to-face meetings after the Easter Holidays on 4 May 2021. We have been outdoors for all meetings either in the Scout Hall Garden, Hollygate, litter picking in the village, nature walks down to the River Trent, and finishing our Safety badge this term. Katie Vipond will be taking over the running of Beavers from September 2021, other parents with children of Beavers age and younger children have expressed interest in being a dedicated Leader/Assistant, Katie Vipond is following up those enquires, I will be staying on to help as and when needed and still happy to run a meeting once a month and be involved. Thank you to Diane Boddy who undertook all the Covid administration and related work which was a huge support during that time and to Peter and Marilyn for their continuing kindness, scouting wisdom and organisation help with OSM, we could not do it without all this extra help. Annual General Meeting **Cubs Report Katie Lee – Section Leader Thursdays 6.00pm -7:30pm** Annual General Meeting Numbers have fluctuated but we have managed to keep going throughout the pandemic running either virtual, setting activities via email or face to face activities initially in small groups and now back together as a pack. We are back to 28 cubs at present and will be back to 30 in September when the next lot of Beavers move up. We have been very grateful to the Whitehead/Boddy family for all their work on the garden area as this has enabled us to run face to face sessions and cover lots of fun outdoor activities. Having offered flexible ways for them to partake we have managed to continue working on badge elements and have completed 234 badges to date this year which averages as just over 7 per cub. That includes 6 Chief scout Silver Awards and we are about to award another 5 to those leaving this summer providing they complete the last task I’ve set for this week. We have lost Sarah Ainger as a regular helper although she is happy to come and help on special occasions if needed. Jo Trow has also not been able to help since I changed the day but has continued to support with the extra bits as required and comes when she gets an early finish from work. Susie Baker has joined the team as her son Thomas has reached cubs age. She is yet to go through the recruitment stage but is proving to be very reliable and helpful so we’re looking forward to having her around for a few years at least! ## Annual General Meeting We have been able to offer places to some of the cubs waiting on the waiting list which has helped reduce the list down a bit. Most of the cubs that I lost through the pandemic have asked to go back on the waiting list for Scouts when they reach that age so their scouting journey might not yet be over completely The parents of the cubs have remained very supportive and I’m getting plenty of assistance when I ask which is fantastic and hopefully it might wet the appetite of some to help out regularly. We have continued to try to support the community a bit through the pandemic. We covered how to write a letter and sent those and pictures to the elderly residents of the care homes with the support of the St Mary’s Church team. We also sent our best jokes to the residents of the Manor House for comic relief. They have just completed a sponsored walk to raise money for the buses 4 homeless charity and raised over 250 pounds which was a fantastic effort. That has enabled the cubs to complete their world badge project element or their community impact badge or personal ‘leaders challenge’ element and therefore fits the fundraising for charity requirements. ## Annual General Meeting We have worked with the twinning association to try to help with the links to Bussy st Georges and had a photography lesson or two from Rob Trow (who kindly gave up his time) to take some photos that highlighted some of the things we share with the people of Bussy St George. We also sent Easter cards to the cubs pack there. The twinning association are hoping to run some boules sessions in September and plans are afoot to run a cubs vs brownie competition as part of that. My priorities for this year are to complete my night away permit. I got everything done except the camp last year in preparation for the district camp but unfortunately that was cancelled. Annual General Meeting **Scouts Report Paul Johnson (Jockey) – Section Leader Fridays 7.30pm – 9.15pm** ## Annual General Meeting We started in July last year using Zoom for our meetings during which we have played Charades, Battleships, Snakes & Ladders, Bingo and of course done several quizzes. We have managed to do training in CPR, fire lighting and axe & saw using videos made on YouTube and our own Facebook page. The Scouts have been presented badges by post and the Troop even won the District Quiz. The Scouts joined in a camp online and had Troop meetings on Halloween, a Remembrance Day meeting and a Christmas Party. 2021 did not start out well with only one meeting in January then nothing until I came back in March. We then had our first investiture on Zoom. Two Patrol Leaders, Henry and Oliver, stepped up and ran a zoom meeting. Unfortunately, in April Rehannah my ASL was unable to continue Scouting, but thanks to Isaac and his mother we were able to present her with a bunch of flowers. I would like to thank Rehannah for her great help and support over the years. Since then we have been able to manage one meeting a month due to my work commitments. As the restrictions have eased the Troop has been able to take part in the Radcliffe litter pick, we managed to have one half of the Troop do a face-to-face meeting in the Scout Hall, and we had a couple of camp training days. ## Annual General Meeting On the 9th July we had our first Troop meeting at the Hollygate Campsite and even invested more Scouts. I would like to thank all the parents that have supported the Troop over this difficult year and especially Brian Hayles who has been helping out at all the zoom meetings and face to face meetings. At the start of the pandemic the Troop numbered 17 we now have 29 Scouts, I would like to thank the Scouts for their patience and good behaviour while I blundered on with the technology. Annual General Meeting **Explorers Report Simon Oliver – Section Leader Tuesdays 7.30pm – 9.00pm** ## Annual General Meeting This past year has been quite challenging with Covid and lockdowns. We started the year with 11 explores and during the lockdowns the older ones left, leaving 5 Explorers left in the unit. When we first went into lockdown, we did move online for Zoom meetings, where we did some quizzes set by the leaders or the Explorers including video games and music. As well as just catching up. Once we were allowed to resume meetings under new rules we moved to an outdoor program. The activities we did were a bike ride out into vale of Belvoir, which started by me getting a puncture before leaving Radcliffe and we learned that the 5 young people we have can ride bikes but did not know how to use gears! After a lot of stops, to put chains back on, we were off and finally managed the planned route. We also went kayaking and canoeing at Hoveringham and did some walks and scavengers hunts in the village and surrounding areas. ## Annual General Meeting Then back to lockdown again, when we could start meetings, we met in the Easter holidays and went for a walk where we got snow, rain and sun in the few hours we were out. This was an opportunity to catch up and talk about what the Explorers would like to do going forward for this year. So far this year we have done a mixture of activities including cooking, fire lighting, night hikes, treasure hunts, music quizzes, starting to paint the Explorer room which will get finished at some point and another bike ride which seemed to go a lot better this time around Holme Pierrepont. We have recently started to recruit some new members from Ladybay and Meadow Covet Scouts as well as some from Radcliffe scouts to join us shortly to boost our numbers.
