Group Scout Leader’s/Acting Chair’s Report
Once again we have had an incredible year at 6[th] Beeston Scout Group. As a group we are still supporting our young people
This year has seen the continued expansion in numbers of young people in the group and we have had a concerted effort in gaining new leaders with mixed success.
The year has again been packed full of exciting Scouting adventure, the highlights of which are detailed in the separate reports from the Beaver, Cub, Scout and Explorer sections. All of our young people have progressing through the Award Scheme and had a huge amount of fun along the way. As well as earning loads of badges, whether they noticed it or not, they have also gained #SkillsForLife, along with knowledge and values that will help to equip them to be effective members of their local, national and international communities.
The successes that we have experienced are all down to the dedication and commitment of the adults that are involved in our group. Without them we would struggle to achieve our aims and to provide those opportunities for our young people. Our adults, both uniformed and non-uniformed volunteers deliver one of the best programs for young people available as shown by even in the current challenging times there is continuing scouting contact and activity.
On the premise that many hands make light work, if you would like to get involved and support the other volunteers either in the sections or on the Committee, then please speak to one of the leaders.
It is a privilege and an honour to support such a hard-working and generous group of volunteer leaders and supporters delivering such excellent Scouting experiences helping more young people to achieve more. Thank you to everyone for what you do. Here’s looking forward to another fantastic year of Scouting at 6th Beeston.
Keep up to date with Group news by following us on Twitter (@6thBeestonScout) and checking our (shiny new) website for pictures and information about everything the Group does. 6[th] Beeston Scout Group
Assets
The Group’s Assets stated in the accounts at the end of the financial year 2022/2023 are £132,699.84.
This includes funds for medium term and long-term building maintenance, cover in case of loss of a major hirer and camping equipment maintenance and replacement and subsidies for scouting activities.
Future work includes addressing issues with the garden for which a contractor has been engaged and investigating the installation of solar panels. Electricity costs were fixed until the end of January 2023 which means that the group now has to address the issue of increased electricity costs.
The Group’s reserves are sufficient to allow us to operate for at least the next 2 years.

Beaver Section Report
Our colony has increased to 24 Beavers, and we've been enjoying our usual combination of fun/creative/active/learning in sessions whilst storming our way through the badge criteria.
Most recently we have been working on our Community Impact Badge, for which the children chose litter as the issue to focus on. We did this by ballot which is an important part of Youshape Scouting. We went out into Beeston to do a litter pick and made posters to encourage people not to drop it. You can see some of the beautiful posters on our noticeboard at HQ.
We've had some visitors - a guide dog to help us with our disability awareness badge, a librarian during National Storytelling Week to help us with our Book Reader badge, and a fantastic drumming workshop.
Some other activities we've done (and the badges we've earned doing them) include:
Making bathbombs for Mothers Day gifts (science experiment badge), code breaking & sign language (communicator), making paper cup helicopters (air activities) and lots of cooking! Pizzas, fruit kebabs and damper bread & s'mores on the campfire.
We also work very hard to make lots of progress on our staged badges so the children move up to cubs having made a good start, and continue to have the majority of our Beavers achieve their Bronze Chief Scout Award by the time they leave us.
We have just signed up to take our colony on our first outdoor camp with the rest of the unit. The Big Weekend next Mayday will be a wonderful opportunity to camp together with all our 6th Beeston Family. How exciting!
Our leadership team now consists of Polar Bear (Rachel Jerath) , HoneyBear (Helen French), Kodiak Bear (Matthew Wilshee) & Swti Bear (Huw Espley) with occasional help from Care Bear (Lucy Snowdon). So quite thin on the ground! We will therefore be organising a parent rota next term, but if you can ever spare a bit of time to lend a hand in sessions, no matter how infrequently, you will be greatly appreciated.
On behalf of the Brilliant Beaver Leader Team

Cub Section Report
I am pleased to say that our Cub pack this year has gone from strength to strength. We have had new young leaders, new leaders and lots of new Cubs join us, as well as said goodbye to some amazing young people ready to be Scouts.
We have done a Summer and Winter Camp since the last report, both well attended and enjoyed by everyone! Our Summer Camp was at Walesby, where the Cubs enjoyed doing water activities, laser quest, climbing, crate stacking, axe throwing and even more. Our Winter Camp was held at the usual Robin Hood Scout Campsite, where the theme of the camp was finding who had stolen Bagheera’s teddy bear! The Cubs became detectives, and discovered through activities, games and quizzes that Pooh Bear had stolen it, but thankfully she returned it once they spoke to her. We have handed out almost 10 Silver Awards this year which is amazing, it shows the Cubs dedication and commitment to their badge work and nights away. We are so proud of every one of them who achieved this before moving on to Scouts. We have had drum workshops, dark walks, first aid training, movie night, fire lighting and so much more happening on our regular Monday meetings. The Cubs have completed so many badges whilst having lots of fun this year! We have also had Cubs completing badges at home, sleeping outside and a big shout out to the wonderful Cub who performed in the Gang Show in front of hundreds of people-what a fabulous job they did.
Sadly we said goodbye to Rama and Kim in the summer, as they moved to Thailand to retire and enjoy themselves. We were all sad to see them leave but the leaders keep in touch with them and we even video called them during our Winter Camp! Chil (Issie) took over the reins leading Cubs, and is now known as Akela/Chilkela. However Chilkela couldn’t lead Cubs without the amazing leadership team that volunteer every week. Thank you to Rob (Bagheera), Chris (Rikki), Peter (Shere Khan), Jo (Hathi), Emma (Ikki) and Colyn (Tigger) for their continued support, and thank you and welcome to Molly (Mowgli) who joined us part way through the year and has been a great addition to the team! Overall it’s been a wonderful year for Cubs, and we’ve lots planned for the upcoming year so watch this space!

Scout Section Report
The 2022-2023 year was a good year for Scouts, with many camps and activities, making the most of a full year without COVID interruptions. Back at the start of the year in April, we had one of our Scout parents take us out for a bat walk around Attenborough. This was a fantastic way to experience the Nature reserve in a new light and make a normal walk far more enjoyable.
Later in the Summer, we had possibly the hottest camp and of the Scouts had ever experienced with highs of almost 40 C. Despite the challenges of the heat, everyone was able to complete a hike from the campsite to the nearby town (Ashby-de-la-Zouch) to buy ingredients for their evening meals. They then cooked in patrols, producing a wide range of meals – so to any Scout parents, make sure they continue to cook for you at home as they did a great job on camp (including washing up!).
Autumn term began with our 4 patrol leaders all moving on to Explorers leaving a gap for new Scouts to try their hands at leadership. It also saw us begin our skills challenge badge which was completed over a number of weeks throughout the year. The Scouts took part in a variety of challenges including minefield, an infinity rope challenge and most excitingly a game of flaming battleships!
We also took 13 of the Scouts to Blackwell Adventure for Birmingham County’s IceSCOUT event, a winter camp in the middle of December with hundreds of Scouts, Guides, Explorers, Rangers and Leaders. Over the weekend Scouts were able to try many activities, such as climbing, bushcraft, an escape room, and a very popular silent disco in the evenings.
Having been disappointed to miss out on NESST last year, this year it went ahead and a number of brave Scouts took on the late night hike challenge. In stark contrast to our hot camp and hike back in July, January was extremely cold and icy. This gave the hike an added layer of difficulty, but, after a long night (a very long night) all of the Scouts completed the route and were able to settle down for a couple hours of sleep before being collected the next morning. After enjoying two county events, we decided to slow down and meet some of our nearer Scouting friends. This began with the District Scout Quiz, which after an enjoyable evening, one of our very own teams was able to win. This meant that we claimed the trophy that some of you have hopefully seen displayed proudly in the committee room looking out into the main hall. Since this we have also been invited to join 2 nd Bramcote Scouts for some sessions of scuba diving which many of our Scouts will be looking forward to over the coming months. Looking forward to the next year, we will again be offering as many camps as possible, handing out over 80 owed badges and hopefully earning some more as we go.
Thank you all for another good year of Scouts, here’s to the next one!

Magellan Explorer Scout Section Report
This year has been another year of growth and development for Magellan. We now have 23 Explorers and 5 leaders and with our oldest having only just turned 17, we are expecting to grow significantly further when we welcome more young people coming up from Scouts in the coming Autumn and Winter. We have continued to provide an interesting and engaging programme on Thursday evenings covering diverse skills such as film making, knife and axe work, air rifle shooting, cookery and many more. In addition to this we have also taken part in many entertaining activities such as making mini hovercrafts, climbing and scavenger hunts to name but a few. We have also recently completed some community work with Broxtowe Community Projects where we cleared the yard behind their building so it can be developed and used as a space by volunteers and service users (photos below).
Away from the HQ we have also taken part in a number of camps and events throughout the year including the annual NESST hike where our team walked over 18 miles in a very respectable 9 hours and 6 minutes coming 5 th of the 16 teams who finished as a whole.
5 of our Explorers have recently completed their Silver DofE expeditions with the district DofE unit. This included completing two 3-day expeditions and presenting their achievements to an audience of over 100 of their parents and peers. A fantastic achievement they should be very proud of.
Our thanks this year as always goes to our leadership team of Tom, Oliver, Nik, Chris and Dave. The 6th Beeston executive committee for their support (Special mention to Taz, Katharina and Alex) and all the parents, carers and explorers themselves as the Explorer Unit would not be as strong as it is without all of your support.
Before, during and after our community work with Broxtowe Community Projects
David Preece,
Explorer Scout Leader

C6 Groups and Districts Receipts & Payments Form (Multi-fund)
Note A: Restricted Funds Reporting
The trustees administering the funds for the Richard Moorhouse Legacy decided In November 2021 to transfer the total remaining amount of £18,914.03 to the group rather than paying 5% per year for the remaining 18 years. This will prevent administration charges and inflation depleting the amount unnecessarily. Therefore the restricted amount is now reported against the CAF Gold Savings Account.
Note B: Tax Claim for Year 2022/23
This is the Gift Aid amount due to the Group for the year 2022/23 which will be claimed from HMRC in the current financial year.
Note C: Debts owing to group
Subscriptions £140.00 Rent £150.00 Cheque received, but not banked until April 2023 Note D: Expenses occurred not yet invoiced Electricity £930.61

Designated Funds
There are £833.03 raised towards the purchase of a defibrillator.
Restricted Funds
The Group received a legacy of £22,169.74 from Mr Richard Moorhouse in January 2019. This legacy was held in trust by his executors (Solicitors: Rothera Sharp), but as stated in Note A above, the total remaining amount was paid to the group in November 2021. The stipulation that the funds are to be used for maintenance still remains.

My work has been undertaken so that I might state to the charity’s trustees those matters I am required to state to them in an Independent Examiner’s report and for no other purpose. To the fullest extent permitted by law, I do not accept or assume responsibility to anyone other than the charity and the charity’s trustees for my examination work.
Respective responsibilities of Trustees and Examiner
The Group’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. They consider that an audit is not required for this year (under Section144 of the Charities Act 2011 (the Charities Act)) and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to:

Basis of Independent Examiner's report
My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the Group and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a 'true and fair' view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
Independent Examiner's statement
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
- which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements
of the Charities Act
have not been met; or
- to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
