Nottingham Sea Cadets Unit No 258 Registered Charity No. 522279 Trustees' Annual Report for the year ended 5 April 2024
The Nottingham Sea Cadet Unit, Waterside Way, Colwick, Nottingham, NG2 4DP is registered with the Charity Commission (No 522279) and constituted by Deed of Trust dated 24 June 1963.
Trustees
Captain James Hofton (Appointed Acting 13 April 2022; Appointed Chair 13 October 2022; Resigned as Chair 10 January 2023) John Matthews
Lt Cdr Michael Butler RNR (Rtd) Chair, (Appointed Chair 10 January 2023) The Marine Society and Sea Cadets (Charity No. 313013) plus
Lt (SCC) D Clark RNR CO (non-Trustee)
Structure, governance and management
The Charity is constituted and governed by a Trust Deed dated 24 June 1963.
Trustees of the Charity are selected and appointed by existing trustees and are voted in at Annual General Meetings. Officials are voted in by the UMT (Unit Management Team).
Objectives and activities
The aim of the Sea Cadet Corps is to help young people towards responsible adulthood by
encouraging valuable personal attributes, leadership, citizenship, and high standards of conduct, using a nautical theme based on the customs of the Royal Navy. Membership is open to young people aged 10-18 years regardless of gender, religion or race and, within the bounds of safety to themselves and others and in line with the DDA where reasonably practicable, to those with special needs and neurodiversity. Parade nights are Tuesday and Thursday evenings, plus weekends and holidays as appropriate. Opportunities to participate in sport, expedition activities, sailing, powerboating on fresh or salt water, passage in sea-going boats are taken up as they arise via various organisations including the Royal and Merchant Navies and various sail training trusts.
Achievements and performance
The unit comprises several buildings. Maintenance continues to be an ongoing concern. An
ambitious scheme to build a project which would have comprised of offices, meeting rooms and accommodation was halted owing to spiralling costs. This year it was decided to purchase and install a new heads block and new shower block. We also had to upgrade the electrical wiring circuits at considerable cost.
With thanks to our Sea Cadets staff, the Unit continues to attract young persons. They continue to make an important contribution to the City of Nottingham by their attendance at various important occasions.
The site of Nottingham Sea Cadets along the banks of the River Trent is ideal for water activities. It is a popular venue for outside organisations to use and we are working towards coming to the point when RYA courses can be held here in the near future.
The Unit will always endeavour to be proactive in ensuring the young persons in our trust become respected and respectful citizens.
