Chairmans Report Wednesday 27th November 2024 Mandy Cooke
I think before I talk about looking forward, I would just like to look back and give my special thanks to the people who have been volunteers on the committee, when I first started – seven years ago. The sad thing is not all the people that I began my journey with at the Hall are still with us. It just reminds us that life is fragile, and you never know what is round the corner. Probably that is quite a good thing, and my sincerest thanks go to all the previous volunteers who have given their time and energy to make the Hall what it is today.
As you all must be aware by now, there is a very strong core group of volunteers who keep this Hall running. They call bingo, cook soup, hang garlands, manage accounts, serve copious amounts of tea and coffee, endlessly wash up, work on the bar till late into the night, sell book after book of raffle tickets, mop up the occasional vomit when required, type up minutes, set agenda’s, keep the garden to a lovely standard, unblock the drains, clear the car parks, serve cakes, write policy and procedures and take money off as many people as they can, in whichever shape or format – whether it be applying for grants from NKDC…………… or anyone else who cares to come over our threshold.
I don’t think for one minute I realised how much there is to do when you offer to be a volunteer – particularly as the chairperson at the Hall. I used to have a well-paid job where I got paid a lot of money for taking responsibility. The book literally stopped with me when I was at work.
In retirement, I joined the village hall committee and having become chairman again realised the book stops with me, not in a month of Sunday’s did I think I would lose sleep about:
finding a bingo caller last minute,
not understanding why, I couldn’t get onto the Charity Commission website and months later realising the code doesn’t go to mobiles – only mainframe computers,
sorting out all the governance documents required by the Charity Commission –
as well as having to soothe troubled brows.
I have gained quite a lot from it (including a few more grey hairs than necessary), but I am grateful that I have given up my time over the years. I have met, on the whole, so many lovely people.
I have to name, whether she likes it or not, Margaret Bothamley who retired as Caretaker during my term of office. She continues to play such a pivotal role in the life of this Hall. When it comes to reliability and consistency there are certain people on this Committee, you can just rely on, without any fuss, to get on with what they need to be doing. Chris Gower coming back to help us at the Murder, Mystery -as our other stalwart Margaret (must be in the name) had the audacity to have previously booked a holiday. No doubt if she wasn’t away then she would have been there. For hours on end. We have some absolute stalwarts on this committee who work so hard.
Without them there would be most definitely:
No bingo on a Tuesday night
No soup and bingo on a Saturday afternoon,
No Luncheon Club on a Monday
No Craft Group on a Tuesday,
No Bowls Club on a Thursday and no Whist on a Friday
So please remember none of the Committee get paid for anything they do. In fact, it costs them money if they live outside the village and they give up their evenings, weekends, nights and holidays to make the village hall a good place to be. They don’t have to do this.
On a positive note, I think the greatest achievement for me whilst on the Committee has been the disabled ramp. Every time I see it, I am chuffed that all the hours we have given gets things like this done.
So:
All the best for all the people who are staying on the Committee. I do hope many more people help to “share the load” so that we can still have such a “good sense of belonging at this lovely place”.
I will see you all again in the New Year and well done for all you have done and will continue to do, on behalf of Hale Magna Village Hall.
