Hale Magna Village Hall

Chairman’s Report 2021

What a difference a year makes.

Last year’s AGM was held via Zoom as we were in the midst of the worst of the Pandemic, that hit Lincolnshire hard during that time. As a Funeral Celebrant I knew that a tough period lay ahead, and so it proved with some terrible times for so many families in Lincolnshire. The Hall was closed and it was not safe for us to carry on as normal.

But over the last 12 months, restrictions were eventually eased and we are now back to some kind of new normal.

There was a possibility that the Hall would be needed for the Covid response but ultimately this was not to be and we were not called upon to play our part.

I am proud of the fact that this committee kept the Hall in good condition through the lock downs and we paid our dues accordingly and that we especially paid our dedicated caretaker Margaret throughout.

Applications for the Government’s Covid grants made by myself and Chris proved very fruitful and literally saved the Hall. We were quick to apply for funding and we got it.

And this funding proved essential when possibly the biggest crisis ever to hit the Hall occurred earlier this year in June. A leaking roof and subsequent investigations revealed the need for a whole new roof for the Hall. Thanks to our prudent management of the Hall’s finances, grants and fundraising that had previously been achieved, we were able to meet the almost £25,000 bill that resulted. An extra ordinary meeting was convened, the works agreed and everything was done in a matter of a few weeks. The Hall was saved.

I wish to pay particular tribute to Dean Baumber, our local roofing expert, who stepped in to do all the work so wonderfully, at such short notice. We owe him a great debt of gratitude. Thank you so much Dean.

Our Raise the Roof appeal has brought in much needed donations that have contributed to the huge costs involved.

And since late summer, things have been getting back to normal at our Hall, with bingo starting again in August and gradually building in numbers until we are almost now at pre pandemic levels. We held our nerve, when we were making a loss at bingo, unheard of before, and this courage is now paying off.

Similarly with Soup and Bingo, Table Top Sales and other events, people are gradually having the courage to come back out and join in.

We now have our own functioning bar under the leadership of Bar Manager Amanda. This is already bringing in much needed monies for us and will be further developed as we go along. Thank you Amanda and team.

The hall now has WiFi and is therefore able to accommodate bookings where internet access is required.

We are rebuilding our finances and the future of the Hall is once again bright. We continue to apply for grants and have recently been accepted as a Community Champion for the Co-op and will be taking part in the North Kesteven lottery. Do buy your lottery tickets through our page.

Sadly we have lost some much loved faces from our community over the last year, not least of all our fellow Trustee Simon Needham, who did so much to make the village what it was. We can only hope to continue our work in the way that he would have wanted and to build on all his achievements.

The Trustees have continued to offer the Hall for the funeral wakes of village residents free of charge. This is, of course, subject to the Hall being available and it is important that for those families who want the Hall for the gathering afterwards, funeral services and arrangements are not confirmed until the Hall availability is known.

Coming up we have a wonderful Murder Mystery Christmas event in December and our first ever Wedding Fair in January,

when the Hall will be on show at its best, fitted with a marquee lining to show what we can offer prospective wedding couples.

I would like to thank all the many people who have supported the Trustees over this last, difficult year. Especially John Cope for the hedge and grass cutting and Johnny Gower for all his handiwork as always; those who have helped with catering at events and regular activities; those who have helped staff the bar and the many people involved in running the weekly bingo.

Finally, I would like to thank Margaret, our caretaker for all her work and also my fellow Trustees, who have knuckled down and ploughed on through all the last year has thrown at us. And especially Chris Gower and Rachel Cope, our dedicated Secretary and Treasurer. But everyone has played their part in so many ways.

Here’s to a happy, safe and prosperous twelve months for the Hall and all of us.

Andrew Key, 17.11.21
