Structure and Governance

1st Nanpantan Scout Council is part of the national organisation of The Scout Association and operates in accordance with the Association’s Policy, Organisation and Rules (POR). The POR document contains details of the organisational structure and governance procedures for the Group.

The Scout Group currently has an Executive Committee of elected, nominated and ex-officio members who must meet at least once a year at its Annual General Meeting and at other times by way of Extraordinary General Meetings if so called. From this year onward the Executive Committee will be constituted as a Trustee Board in line with the Scout Association POR.

1st Nanpantan Scout Council is the electoral body, which supports and encourages the development of Scouting in Nanpantan, Loughborough. It is the body from which the Trustee Board is elected.

The Scout Association is aware of the rights of young people and has made concerted efforts to encourage Scout Councils to involve young people on all committees in a decision-making capacity. 1st Nanpantan Group Scout Council has endeavoured to implement this initiative.

The Trustee Board is accountable to the Scout Council and is responsible for the management of Scouting at Nanpantan.

Newly appointed Trustee Board members will receive an induction document that outlines their responsibilities of membership as Trustees and explains the functions of the Board and its sub-committees.

Objectives

The aim of the 1st Nanpantan Scout Council is to promote the development of young people by enabling them to achieve their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential, as individuals, responsible citizens and members of their local, national and international communities.

During 2023/24 the Scout Council has endeavoured to achieve this by providing an enjoyable and attractive scheme of progressive training, based on the Scout Promise and Law and guided by Adult Leadership.

All sections are open to young people of the appropriate age regardless of gender, race, religion or disability. The Scout Council has funds available to support financially disadvantaged individuals.

Reports

Chairperson

I wish to begin by thanking everybody for their effort, enthusiasm and energy during what has been a challenging year. Whether that is working directly with our young people, providing a wide range of fun and challenging activities in what can only be described as less than ideal surroundings. Hopefully before our next AGM they will have access to excellent new facilities that will allow everybody to grow and flourish as they make their journey through scouting.

I would also like to thank the many unseen people who have worked tirelessly to ensure that the less than glamourous tasks of administration, finance, fundraising and the ongoing building project. Whilst their work may often go unnoticed their impact is vital to our continued success and development.

Gareth Rhodes - 1st Nanpantan Chair – garethrhodes@nanpantanscouts.org.uk

Group Scout Leader

We currently have 143 members within our 7 sections, with more starting in the September term.

At Nanpantan we try and create a full and varied programme with indoor and outdoor activities at the hut and out and about. We give the young people great fun & adventure in their Scouting journey.

We had a group camp in June 2023 attended by over 100 members of our group from Squirrels to Explorers. They covered lots of on site activities, had a disco and fun of the fair stalls to go round on the Saturday evening.

All our sections have been away at times on camps and expeditions during the year and some members have ventured further a field to the Himalayas and most recently to Iceland.

We’ve had lots of members gaining the chief scout award though out our group, so well done to all!

The Building Project is in progress. We are having a full demolition of the old building and a new scout hut/community centre built in its place. We have a dedicated Building Sub-Committee led by Emma Mile who I’d personally like to thank for her amazing dedication towards this project. We are always looking for more support if you’re interested, please get in touch.

We’ve just had our community cream tea fundraising event organised by our head of Fundraising Kerry Whiteside. Kerry is a great fundraiser and full of ideas and energy, and we’d like to express our thanks to her.

We currently have leaders working tirelessly in all sections, but encourage additional people to join us, so that we can ensure the continuance of the Group in the years ahead. Can you help us? We are a very friendly group of leaders!

I wish to thank our Leaders, Section Helpers & Trustees for their impressive dedication to provide great scouting experiences for our young people over the past year. We also appreciate the engagement from all the families of our Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs & Scouts!

Thanks again to everyone: kids, leaders, exec members and families. We feel that Nanpantan is a very special group, and the spirit of our members and the energy and ideas of our volunteers is what keeps it going.

Squirrels – Thursday

This year the Squirrels have had a huge variety of activities including hiking, a canal trip, a day at the group camp, a Lego day and lots of different activities on a Thursday evening including pirate night, sports day, campfires and science experiments. We had our annual Christmas tree in the Loughborough tree festival. We were lucky to be chosen to be part of the YouShape award pilot for the Squirrels section and 16 of our young people achieved this 4 part award - a huge achievement for them! Alongside this we have awarded 189 badges across the Squirrel drey in the past 12 months. A huge achievement for our youngest members. We also have had a number of Squirrels achieve their acorn awards, the highest award in Squirrels. Well done to Theo, Payton, Oliver, Elliot, Xavier and Edith for this huge achievement. All 5 have now moved onto Beavers and we wish them the best of luck there.

We have had some changes to the team this year. Alongside our original leaders, Ben, Jenny and Marie we have added George and Gilly, along with our fabulous young leader Claire. Jenny and Marie are moving to lead Beavers from September and will be very much missed at Squirrels! Also, a huge thank you to Sarah who helped us for the January-March term.

Jo (Squirrels Section Leader)

Beavers – Wednesday

Well, it has been another busy year! We have made rafts, rolled cheese, learned to speak in Chinese, created sweet dispensers and used our decoding skills to escape. We tried two new badges: money skills and book reader. The first term ended with a rewards night after we had all worked so hard to fill our star charts. On a cold (freezing) December evening, the hot chocolate deluxe was most welcome! As always, we love to make the most of the outdoors: we have paddled in the stream at Bradgate, stomped across the top of Beacon Hill and enjoyed being out on our bikes. A definite highlight this year was visiting the Fire Station. Not only did we get to sit in a fire engine, we were asked to help hose it down too. Well done to the 6 beavers who achieved their bronze award this year. Thank you to our young leaders- Isaac, Katie, William and Benjamin. Without them, our sessions would be a lot less fun and a lot more chaotic. Finally, thank you parents for your ongoing support and for giving up your time to support our meetings away from the hut.

Beavers – Friday

Since last year, Friday Beavers has seen a steady increase in numbers to twenty-three, with many moving up from Squirrels.

Together we have had another fun filled and busy year working upon a wide array of challenge and activity badges. We have invited various community visitors including Canine Partners for our work upon disability awareness, Robogals from Loughborough University for work upon the digital citizen badge and Aquabox for a talk about humanitarian aid and the importance of clean water for the global issues badge.

We have also included many outdoor activities such as cooking on campfires, hikes, making water filters and stomp rockets. Plus, we have arranged visits to the Oaks, the Carillion and Bell Boating at Leicester Outdoor Pursuits Centre. A big thank you goes out to all those that have kindly provided the help and support needed to make this programme happen.

A special well done has also been given to the three Beavers who achieved their bronze chief Scout award. A further three are due to be awarded before the end of term.

After five years Craig made the decision to step away from leading in December 2023 and Jyoti will also be leaving at the end of term after assisting for the past three years. A big thank you goes out to all for the countless hours of work and dedication they have given to Beavers. We hope they will all have fond

Scouts

memories of their time in Scouting.

The successful search for additional support was then began with Jenny Jordan assistant Squirrel leader, Rainbows leader and forest schoolteacher offering to become the lead, with Marie Leyland, Clare Lickess and Nick Tinsley supporting as assistant Beaver leaders. With these new changes Friday Beavers will move to Tuesday evenings after the summer break.

Clare and team Friday Beavers

Cubs – Monday (Nanpanthers Pack)

Well, it’s that time again, where did the year go? Cubs is still as fun due to the Cubs always making the best of what we do. They are always happy to have ‘Fun through Learning’.

We have had a new leader join us this year – Sarah, she has joined us with a wealth of knowledge and is very good at running a Campfire. We also have 4 Young Leaders who are helping us – Tobias, Alex, Jacob & Sam.

6 Cubs have achieved their Silver awards this year which is the top award within Cubs. Well done to them.

The Cubs joined The Thursday Cubs for a joint Space camp in November 2023. They did climbing, rocket firing, junk modelling where there were prizes for the best designs. The weekend was a great success and the two packs worked really well together and made it a pleasure for the Leaders to run.

We held the Nanpanther Camp 2025 in April; it went well as we had a packed weekend of activities at the Oaks Campsite. We were indoors as the weather was questionable but held out for us. The Cubs were worn out by the end and a good time was had by all.

We have done a variety of Badgework throughout the year and the Cubs have worked hard to cover the tasks we asked them to do. We are looking forward to being outside more in the Summer months!...

We took some of the Cubs on the County Cub trip to the Black Country Museum, they went back to a Victorian school for a lesson and went down the mine. They were a credit to take out as they all enjoyed it and made the most out of the day.

We had a trip to the Indoor Bowls centre for the Cubs to learn a new sport, it was a fun evening with some good shots. We may have some future bowlers in our midst!

We had 2 nights of modelling, the first was where the Cubs built and painted Warhammer Models. The second was where half the pack built and painted a Spitfire plane and the other half built and painted a Jaguar car, this took 2 weeks as the Cubs were doing it to the best of their ability. We were very impressed with the outcome of the work they did; they took their models home to keep.

I wish to thank all the parents of the Cubs for their ongoing support, we thank you and your children for making it a pleasure to run the ‘Nanpanthers’.

Also…if you feel you could be a helper to the Nanpanthers then please feel free to contact me. Thank you for listening.

Malcolm, Louise, Alex & Sarah.

Nanpanther CSL & team.

Cubs - Thursday

Another year has raced past with lots of fun and adventures for Thursday cubs. We have had 24 cubs for most of the year with a smaller group of 16 for the summer term. Isobel has been a fantastic young leader for us this – keeping us older ones on our toes!

Everyone hugely enjoyed the whole group camp last June – oh to have weather like that now! Squirrels to Explorers all on the same site, enjoying a whole raft of activities including film time and a disco on the Saturday night. We also joined forces with Monday Cubs for a space themed indoor camp in November at the Holwell site. The weekend started with space craft creation out of ‘junk’ and then we searched for alien glow sticks. Saturday included climbing, rocket launching, making (and maybe eating) space food, a moon rock hunt, treasure hunt, the ever popular tuckshop and camp fire. We also played space invaders, ate lots of yummy food and made up many games and adventures along the way.

We have just been on a summer camp at the Oaks – Olympic & Paralympic themed. We tried to pack in as many sports as possible – including archery, climbing, jungle trail, visually impaired football, a decathlon, boccia, seated volleyball, and lots more. We made our own Olympic torches, tried to build the Eiffel tower, had s’mores round the campfire and got colouring with Phryge the Paris 2024 mascot. Everyone had a great time and the cubs even all went to sleep at a reasonable time……..

Group meetings have continued to be as varied and active as we can make them. Activities have included the much-anticipated chippy hike, playing beach volleyball at the University, sitting in a police car during their visit and lighting fires. We’ve also learnt about the environment, and about Hungarian culture from a special guest. We have celebrated Diwali, pancake day, St David’s day and the Holi festival of colour.

Plans for the rest of this term include pond dipping and trying to float our homemade mini rafts, a nature walk and the much-loved water night to end before the summer break.

According to OSM 173 badges have been achieved by Thursday cubs since June 2023 and congratulations to our eight cubs have achieved their Chief Scout Silver this year - well done to Eadie, Jess, Evie, Issac, Ronnie, Niam, Ellia and Isla. Several have gone onto scouts, so I hope they are enjoying that experience too.

Jo, Carl, Richard, Nick & Isobel

Scouts – Tuesday (Priory Troop)

Priory Troop currently has 21 members. It has once again been a busy year, the Scouts have been working towards their Chief Scout Gold Award, with Will Nichols achieving this high award. Well, done Will.

We have done a few County and District led activities including Rambling Fox, Climbing camp, District camp and summer camp at Walesby Forest.

The scouts have done many things, from lighting fires to service work up at the Oaks to riffle shooting, we also had a visit from the Police.

We have a number of camps coming up this year including a summer camp and Splash camp and we have 7 from the troop taking part in the district international trip to Iceland put on by Kegworth.

Scouts

I would like to Thank Rachel, Ed, and Adam for all their hard work and support through the year. Preeti Kitching

Scouts – Wednesday (Longcliffe Troop)

Over the past year, Wednesday Scouts have stayed strong at around 27 Scouts.

With five Scouts hopefully completing their Chief Scouts’ Gold award soon.

Over the past year scouts have completed the youshape award, have done air rifle shooting and learnt how to use an axe and saw safely, and go on a bike ride and do basis bike maintenance.

We all so had a trip to Loughborough Schools Foundation to see the Grammar school’s Bee hives. Where we got to wear a bee suit and open the hives and see the bees at work. Later in the year the school’s Bee keepers came the Nanpantan and the scouts got to spin the Honey out of the hive frames and even try freshly made honey.

Thanks to the other Leader for their support on running activities.

Yours in Scouting

Joe Putt

Fundraising Report 2022/23

Fundraising Report 2023/2024 : Current funds = £20,936

Our fundraising efforts have continued this year, focusing a significant effort on raising funds for our new facilities.

We are delighted to confirm that we have been successful in being awarded £9291 from Charnwood Borough Council, Community Facilities fund. This will fund adaptations to our new building to ensuring that it’s fully accessible to all.

Over the past year we have also received kind donations from TopLets (£250) and East Midlands Airport, who sponsored our Community Tea event in May 2024 to the value of £180 – funding nearly 60 cream teas! We have also benefited from the following fund raising activities, monies from which support the day to day running costs of activities with the children.

Charnwood Challenge – September 2023 - £1629 – This was our fifth year running this very successful event, once again attracting over 150 runners and walkers. Funds were raised via entry fees and refreshments. Thank you everyone who kindly supported this event in a wide variety of ways, including those who donated prizes too.

How can you help?

If you would like to be involved in fundraising in any way, have ideas or maybe the business you work for has a community / charity scheme? Please get in touch. We’d love to hear from you.

Building Sub-Committee Update

The Building Committee continue with progress plans to demolish and replace our scout building to a modern facility for us and the community. There have been a number of challenges over the last few month with the sale of the plot of our land resulting in a delay to completion. As the land sale is the primary funding source, this has pushed back a start date on the build but we are still hopeful to start mid to late August with a builder appointed to complete the project.

The project is expected to cost in the region of £430,000 with majority funded by land sale, and grants secured. The shortfall of around £100,000 is planned to be funded through other grants, ongoing fundraising, donations of material and if required a phased approach to the build. If you think you can help at all with the building project, please contact Emma Miles (emmamiles@nanpantanscouts.org.uk)

Thank you to all parents for their patience and support with fundraising as we continue to work towards provision of a new building for the Scout Group and the community.

Financial Report

Overview

Thank you to all members for their support over 2023/24.

There has been some excellent fund raising over the year and we thank everyone who helped and contributed to this. We also have donations and grants such that the building fund is growing as detailed in Emma’s report. In addition, we had volunteers helping marshal parking for British Athletics events which resulted in £1200, there are further opportunities in this area and we value the support of parents and the Scouting team in volunteering to help on these events. Please contact Carl is you are able to help.

We will be due around £7000 in gift aid in the next financial year claiming against a combination of subs, donations and fund raising over the last 3 years. We really appreciate everyone who has completed gift aid forms as this really helps, if you haven’t completed one or are unsure and you pay tax please contact our Subscriptions secretary as it enables us to claim gift aid back and everything helps.

We have had some increased spend on the building development such as planning permission, structural calculations and architect work to support the development of the replacement building.

Thank you to everyone for their support and contribution, we really appreciate everything you do and any additional support such as introductions to organisations that may be able to help with grants, donations, time etc is always appreciated.

9

Thank you to everyone for their support and contribution, we really appreciate everything you do and any additional support such as introductions to organisations that may be able to help with grants, donations, time etc is always appreciated.

scouts be prepored . 1st Nanpantan Scouts Independent examinerfs report to the trustees of Nanpantan Scouts th I report on the accounts of the Trust for the year ended 28 February 2023. Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity's trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144{21 of the Charities Act 2011 {the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed. It is my responsibility to: examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the commission under section 14515){b} of the 2011 Act to state whether particular matters have come to my attention Basis of independent examinerfs report My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a 'true and fair view, and the report is limited to those matters set out in the next statement. Independent examinerfs statement In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention.. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements: to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act and to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act have not been met or 2. to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached me..
